Only a block and a half off the main square and sitting at the base of the mirador (“fort”) hill, El Fuerte Hotel is one of those hidden gems. Starting with a nearly 300-year old hacienda, an American investor has created THE place to stay in El Fuerte. Stepping through the relatively plain main doorway leads you into a lavishly decorated and landscaped interior. We stayed in a generously sized 22X14 room with two double beds, individual A/C plus ceiling fan. Bath featured plenty of clean, hot water. Water is drinkable from the tap, but purified water in coolers & pitchers are provided. Bar, restaurant with excellent food served family-style, no pool but a neat cooling spa nearly hidden within jungle-type landscaping. El Fuerte is a compact town and most everything is within easy walking distance of the hotel. A bank and internet café are two blocks away, and numerous bars and eating establishments are scattered nearby. One caution: This is humid, low-lying country, with the El Fuerte river winding its way just behind the hotel. As a result, mosquitoes abound outside the hotel, so be sure to bring, or purchase, a good repellent featuring 50% or more DEET.
