“One of those hidden gems!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2006

Only a block and a half off the main square and sitting at the base of the mirador (“fort”) hill, El Fuerte Hotel is one of those hidden gems. Starting with a nearly 300-year old hacienda, an American investor has created THE place to stay in El Fuerte. Stepping through the relatively plain main doorway leads you into a lavishly decorated and landscaped interior. We stayed in a generously sized 22X14 room with two double beds, individual A/C plus ceiling fan. Bath featured plenty of clean, hot water. Water is drinkable from the tap, but purified water in coolers & pitchers are provided. Bar, restaurant with excellent food served family-style, no pool but a neat cooling spa nearly hidden within jungle-type landscaping. El Fuerte is a compact town and most everything is within easy walking distance of the hotel. A bank and internet café are two blocks away, and numerous bars and eating establishments are scattered nearby. One caution: This is humid, low-lying country, with the El Fuerte river winding its way just behind the hotel. As a result, mosquitoes abound outside the hotel, so be sure to bring, or purchase, a good repellent featuring 50% or more DEET.

“Like Staying at a Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2006

This hotel was absolutely beautiful. The furnishings and decor in the lobby and hallways were of museum quality. We must have taken over 50 photos of the inside of this hotel. This hotel made us feel that we were really in Mexico - not in a hotel that you could have transplanted anywhere else. The rooms were atmospheric, clean, and large, with the dressing area separate from the bathroom. Food was excellent - breakfasts and dinners. We wish that we could have stayed here longer.

“Favorite Hotel in Copper Canyon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2005

Of the 5 hotels we stayed in during our 11 night Copper Canyon adventure, ElFuerte Lodge was the favorite of our group of 7 women. The location, a block from the plaza, was convenient. The "over the top" Mexican decor was charming, eclectic, huge, and obviously collected over a period of years.
The huge indoor courtyard; large rooms; clean, open kitchen; and bar area with a pool table made the hotel a place we really enjoyed.
Best of all, the staff, from the ladies behind the desk to the dining room manager to the porters, were friendly, super-helpful.
Food was probably the best we had on the trip. This is a hotel where one would be comfortable with a family or on a honeymoon.

“Charming inner courtyard”

Stayed here December 2004. Clean, good shower, Mexican decor.
El Fuerte is small, quiet and charming. Train to the Copper Canyon departed from El Fuerte at 9.00am - later than posted in the schedule. It arrived at Divisadero at 4pm (delayed at the mid-point waiting for the westbound train).
