If you judge a book by its cover you won’t be as disappointed with the Wild Boar Inn Grill and Smokehouse as we were. Behind the sprawling olde worlde building we expected contemporary chic judging from their publicity photos but reality is a tired, old fashioned dwelling with a rabbit warren of long draughty corridors and a dark and dingy interior.
Our ‘classic’ bedroom could well be compared to a classic car (as seen in the Motor Museum) and belonged to a by gone era with squeaks and bumps at every turn – hot water took eight minutes to arrive, the shower had run out of steam, the interior décor had been there and gone although the mould on the bathroom tiles still remained. The bed was comfy, the towels and linen clean but no one had to come and ‘turn down’ our bed cover because it was on top of the wardrobe when we arrived and stayed there throughout our visit. The piece de resistance was when the maintenance man had to be summons at 11pm to break into a friend’s room via the window because the key had got stuck. We later found out that this had happened on other occasions which is why he was so adept with a crow bar.
The lounge has a lovely big fireplace surrounded by chairs however, this must also double up as the smokehouse because it is not a cosy log fire as advertised but an extremely unpleasant smoky area which actually brings tears to your eyes. Our group of friends eventually had to adjourn to our bedroom (because it was the largest) and continue our ‘party’ up there. We were told the fireplace was new but the recent extensive renovations are not obvious.
On our first night in the dining room, our group of eight was sat at the Chef's Table which is located directly next to the kitchen for the ‘best view of the action’. Don’t ask for it because what the blurb doesn’t tell you is that ALL the waiting staff have to pass by with trays of food and empty plates all the time so the kitchen door is constantly opening and shutting causing a continual draught for those with their backs to it. The food is undoubtedly good quality and very tasty (especially the deli boards) but also expensive when compared to that in Lincolnshire, North Yorkshire and Scotland from where our group members hail.
Despite the grumbles and niggles our stay was not unpleasant but we did seem to be the only guests not on a discounted online deal so it wasn’t value for money or stylish with contemporary touches and it will not be somewhere we will be returning to.
