“Beach Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

My second stay at the Gallivant Hotel exceeded my expectations! Situated in a lovely spot with miles of unspoilt beach on the door step it is always worth a visit. The staff were warm and friendly and the room, though small was very clean and bright with an excellent guide to the area. The DVD in the room is a nice touch too, particularly in the winter when you wont spend too much time outdoors. The best thing about the Gallivant is the food, our meal was outstanding, all locally sourced produce cooked to perfection. It is a shame the the exterior does not do the hotel justice, it just looks shabby and uncared for, with the previous hotel name weathering on the roof, this is the only thing that let's it down.

Room Tip: There isn't much difference in the rooms, and there is no view from the hotel so front or back f...

Hello again Rainedaze! Thanks for your nice words about our food and hotel. The outside of the hotel is looking at it's most unflattering right now unfortunately. The building we inherited isn't the most charming for sure from the outside (although we have some plans afoot to try and remedy this) but also all the planting in the beds/gardens are as much as possible indigenous coastal plants which die back and look pretty average right now - we want as much of the vegetation to be natural to the environment and not 'formulaic hotel evergreens'...the upside is this looks fantastic for about 8 months of the year and is totally in keeping, the downside is for 4 months it looks pretty tired, drab and a bit sorry for itself. Come back in the Spring!
best wishes

“Fantastic restaurant, disappointing hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Although we had a really lovely meal at the Gallivant (both the service and the food quality were fantastic) we were really disappointed by the accommodation.

Had the accommodation costs been less expensive, we would have been very pleased, but the prices for rooms and the impression from the marketing/website, give the impression of the hotel being something special, when in fact the room was extremely average.

Having booked the 'Beach Hut Suite' we were surprised to find that it was a fair sized room with a sofa (not a suite) at the end of a motel-style block, in the corner of the car park, right next to the main road. The room was nice enough - warm, clean and comfortable, but cheaply furnished and basically not in the range of quality that the price suggested. Had it been £50 a night cheaper we would have been very pleased with it.

Also the wifi signal was so weak in our room it was virtually unusable, and the "Sitting Room" in the main building was somewhere you may want to put your children in front of the TV for a while, but not somewhere we would want to spend any time in - blaring large TV and a few sofas around the edges of the room.

The staff were very pleasant and welcoming.

Hi alisonlu14
Glad you liked the food and our people. Our style of bedrooms is coastal shabby chic and intentionally not four seasons immaculate/formulaic. Most of the furniture in the room is handmade - the Superking bed and other furniture in your room was made by an amazing guy in Hastings who runs the Hastings and Bexhill Recycling project - TripAdvisor rules prevent me from referencing his url but if you have the time you should google his co - it's great. His stuff is sold in some very, very posh stores in London for a lot of money (Conran etc) and we love it - however it is quite rustic and not supposed to look beautifully 'finished'. We are currently talking to him about doing a lot more work together and we are very excited about this.
The sofa is a pure feather sofa from sofa.com - they make great sofas and we think they are jolly comfortable and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them. WiFi is something that is a recurring issue and not just for guests. Unfortunately our (rather remote) area simply has very intermittent/poor connectivity and Mssrs BT/Virgin etc are simply not interested in increasing the bandwidth. Sometimes it's good sometimes it's not, unfortunately.
The hotel is single story and it is on a road although it is hardly busy and we very rarely if at all get any problems with road noise.
Perhaps if we can persuade you to come back again when it isn't snowing and you can explore the beach and dunes opposite you will see our location in slightly different light - we hope so.
kind wishes

“Snowy break by the sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We arrived on Friday night to be greeted by warmth and friendliness. We were staying as part of a largeish party for a friend's birthday. I'd read some previous reviews and was a little unsure what to expect. Need not have worried. We had great service, good food and a really relaxing time.

If you want big rooms and a big hotel experience then don't come here. This is individual, a bit quirky and not for those used to travelling on business - this is a good thing!

Not all the food worked as well as other dishes but overall I was very pleased by the standard of cooking. Great wine list. But above all great welcome - you felt that they were glad to see you - a refreshing change from places where it seems that they resent guests!

Thank you

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the communal lounge as there is an adjoing room which could be noisy of you were...

Hi Greytigger
Glad you enjoyed yourself. We had a great time looking after you all. Hope we can welcome you back when it's not snowing! The food is only getting better as the team in the kitchen really get things sorted - and we uncover more and more local suppliers, which is great.

“Don't judge a book by its cover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Like another reviewer, we had d, b and b here via Travelzoo offer. The outside of The Gallivant doesn't do the staff and food justice. On a very bleak, freezing day it was a great pleasure to be welcomed warmly and find that the whole hotel was well heated unlike many we've come across. Our room was basic, furnished with limited reclaimed, distressed wood furniture and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was very clean and bright even without a window. Our deal apparently included a glass of wine each which was immediately offered to have now or with our meal. The dining room is uncluttered, pleasantly styled and the seating more comfortable than it looks at a quick glance. No wonder the Gallivant is busy. All the staff are absolutely delightful, smiling and helpful. The menu has interesting choices with good ingredients and well priced. Some are sharing dishes. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the breakfast next day. Again, interesting options, nicely cooked and charmingly served. Our stay was very enjoyable indeed. We weren't able to take advantage of the hotel's close proximity to the beach. Too cold and snowy. The hotel has wifi.
