“Hidden Gem! This place is amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

This was our second year at Mersey River Chalets and we absolutely love it and can't wait to go back in Sept/Oct. It is an amazing outdoor getaway with all the amenities. They have canoes, kayaks, swimming, basketball, tennis, a beautiful boardwalk and a restaurant. Kejimkujik National Park is also only 5 kms away. The staff are lovely, I really can't say enough about how wonderful they are.

We stayed at one of the large chalets for 2 nights. These chalets are perfect! They have everything you need: dishes, appliances, towels, firewood, woodstove, 2 bedrooms and a beautiful front porch overlooking the Mersey River. It's all the outdoor adventure you need with a cozy place to sleep :)

The kayaks and canoes are there for unlimited use and no extra charge. The lake and river make a beautiful canoe/kayak trip where you can see all kinds of birds, turtles and other wildlife. The property is tranquill and our stay there was so relaxing - exactly what the 2 of us needed with our busy schedules.

We did a ton of kayaking/canoeing and relaxing at the Mersey River. We went to Keji for an afternoon to do a longer kayak adventure.

I would STRONGLY recommend this place to anyone, it is pet friendly, wheelchair accessible (the WHOLE place!) and a great place to bring kids. It truly is a hidden gem in our beautiful province, we intend to go several times a year since it is open all year round.

As a sidenote: they have a cat that lives there, she is 12 years old and her name is Magic. She is sweet and may come to visit you :) As cat lovers, we quite enjoy her company while we are in Mersey River!!

“Great Location and Free Kayaks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2009

Stayed for 3 nights at Mersey River Chalets in a Lodge room. Very pleasant room and in a great location for the Kejimkujic National Park. The best thing about it is the free kayaks onsite. We had a fantastic full day exploring the lakes and creeks around the site. Beautiful. The restaurant isn't open outside July/August, but glad it wasn't as we may not otherwise have discovered the M&W Restaurant and Convenience Store just near the entrance to the Park. The owner, Marilyn, cooks, waits on table, serves in the store and is so kind and funny we immediately felt like part of the family. The food is very good too - nothing fancy but good, home cooked fish and chips, burgers etc. And lovely cakes!

“Pleasant time at the Mersey River Chalets”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2008

We stayed in the Mersey River Chalets towards the end of a week-long driving vacation in NS. We originally booked a night in a teepee. When we got to the property however, we decided the teepee did not look as inviting as we had imagined. Instead, the owner put us up in one of the chalets, which was very nice indeed. We had a plank salmon dinner in the on-site restaurant, and in the morning we went for a paddle in the kayaks on one of the lakes on the property, followed by a quick swim. We had the impression we were in the middle of a wilderness, albeit with the comfort of a nice restaurant, friendly staff and very nice chalets.

Something that isnt advertised on the website, but became clear when we visited, is that this property is completely wheelchair accessible. An extensive system of wooden boardwalks connects the various facilities and chalets around the property. A system of ramps gives wheelchairs access to the lake. The kayaks and canoes are adapted for mobility-impaired people also.

Some of the staff also speak German, so the property is friendly for visitors whose first language is German.

Mersey River Chalets is also only about a mile from the entrance of Kejimkujik National Park. It would be a very good base from which to explore the park, and return in the evening to the comfort of the chalets !

“Great for wheelchairs and everyone else too!”

We have just returned from a weekend at the Mersey River Chalets which are just next to the Kejimkujik National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada. The holiday compound is far off the beaten track, at least 2 kilometres on a gravel road off the secondary Highway 8, and about 47 kilometers from Annapolis Royal. There are teepees with beds, fire pits, a lodge, a kitchen area and both large and small chalets. All the chalets have been adapted for wheelchair use. There are ramps everywhere. The Mersey River winds around the compound and feeds into a crystal clear lake where canoes and kayaks are provided. The only thing which we didn't like, but didn't resent either was that the sinks and stoves are set low for people in wheelchairs. The nature park is ideal for family wishing to experience true wilderness. The two staff felines, Magic and Minky are most friendly, as is all of the staff. If it weren't so far we would be sure to return often.

  • Liked — The quiet location and beautiful natural setting.
  • Disliked — Nothing really, except that the sinks were low.

“wheelchair accessible wilderness!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2008

Mersey River Chalets and Nature Retreat -- it's a beautiful spot. We stayed in one of the lodge rooms, but when we come back, we may try one of the tee-pee accommodations (or one of the chalets if we bring the family.)

There are 2 kilometers of wheel-chair friendly boardwalks along a beautiful river bank, passing cascading waterfalls, upstream to a lovely lake, perfect for birdwatching. They have canoes and kayaks, a playground, a great stock of board games, a beautiful restaurant overlooking the falls. It's a perfect place for a family vacation or a youth-group retreat, especially if any members of your group are in wheelchairs.

I went to Nova Scotia to see the Bay of Fundy and the coastal villages, but when we had had enough of the sun and wind, we took note of Kejimkujik National Park, with it's old growth hemlock forests, red maple bottomlands and beautiful lakes. Canoe and bicycle rentals and well marked footpaths -- an easy 5K from Mersey River Chalets.
