“A brilliant week in a beautiful location”

We stayed as a timeshare exchange (Diamond Resorts), but could also have rented directly from the hotel, with good value winter breaks. Spacious apartments are 1, 2 & 3-bedroom if you want to self-cater, bur we opted for half board, which was excellent value - superb breakfast buffet (one of the best we've experienced) and equally good and varied evening meals. A la carte also available, which was also excellent quality. Option of also eating out in a number of other local partner hotels and restaurants with a credit voucher if on half board. Staff extremely friendly and helpful, as were the other guests we chatted to - just as well, as we seemed to be the only English speaking couple there during our week's stay. We didn't hire a car, as using taxis plus public transport worked out more or less the same cost, and it was nice not having to concentrate on the driving. However public transport is a bit limited, certainly in the winter, and you do have to plan your day accordingly. We'll definitely be going back, possibly also in the summer,as it's a fantastic walking area, surrounded by several lakes and impressive mountains.

“Great location and accommodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

The resort is situated at the west end of a spectacular lake in Western Austria and is 3 miles to the east of Bad Aussee. We were glad we had a car, but public transport would have been fine. We did intend to go to Salzburg etc, but stayed locally because of the marvellous scenery.

The resort has 187 apartments in 9 chalet blocks - plus the main reception/restaurant block. Only 35 apartments have prime lake views; the worst would be a ground floor room overlooking the car park. Our split level one-bed apartment had 2 balconies; the views were relatively good from the top balcony of the mountains either side - but the building in front blocked the lake view. The only snag with the apartment was the kitchen - no oven/grill, just hob, toaster and combi-microwave. Also the stated BBC and CNN TV channels in English were just not available.

The compulsory service charge of €3 per person per day gives you a discount card - but this only applied at expensive shops and attractions.

The resort shop is open at breakfast time and teatime: bread and basics were not too overpriced; we were grateful for the good local walking map on sale.

The resort is very well organised; we asked for thinner duvets - supplied straight away. The reception staff speak excellent English; we arrived without any luggage - the staff called the local airline office for us and negotiated extra compensation because of the 3 day delay.

The restaurant has excellent views; breakfast on the terrace on a sunny day with the lakeside view is unbeatable. The breakfast choice is superb with unlimited quantities - including wine. On arrival you are given the choice of breakfast every day at €12 or half board at €26 (with option of €14 credit at local partner restauarants); we opted for casual use: breakfast at €13 and evening meal at €19.

We enjoyed the Anker restaurant at Gossi at the east end of Grundlsee - good food at good value with perfect lakeside views. We walked there from the resort along the south side of the lake (4 miles, but at one stage the path is narrow at the edge of a steep cliff) and caught the bus back. When eating out you will need plenty of cash; we did not find a restaurant that took credit card.

You cannot checkout until a housekeeper has come to see the state of the accommodation: available from 0700, and arrived within 2 mins of our phone call.

We had an excellent week and would be very happy to return,

“Welcome back monarchy”

No need to say much about the great location of the place. Right above the western shore of Grundlsee with a magnificent view, this place is a great place to stay for everyone who likes the lake district on the boarder between Styria, Salzburg and Upper Austria. A hundred years ago this area was Austria's Nr.1 vacation spot for the emperor and the most influential and wealthy people of the Austrian-Hungarian empire.
And the hotel seems to reenact this glorious past. The guests there are mainly from the countries the former empire: Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Austria. Only few English people and the inevitable Germans disrupt this harmony which used to be good old Austria.
The hotel itself consists of I believe 7 apartment houses and a main building that holds also the restaurant and the wellness area. That is IMHO also the only downside. If you want to enjoy these facilities in the winter be prepared to walk up to 300 meters in the cold, before you can use them. If you dream about walking to the sauna in you bathrobe , make sure you get a room in the main building, otherwise you will have no choice then to use the rather small locker rooms to change from you winter gear into your swimsuit.
The restaurant offers great food - Austrian and international - in the morning and for dinner. Since many guests obviously choose to cook for themselves or eat outside, there is plenty of room. The food is great and the service is excellent. You have to try the Sabling-dumplings on wild rice or the regional version of Fish&Chips.
The rooms are OK, nothing special but big enough and clean, the views of the ones facing the lake are spectacular. Only the bathrooms are a bit on the small side but they all feature a bathtub.

“Location, Location, Location ... Beautiful Location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

My sister and I stayed at the Mondi Resort from the 24th of September to the 1st of October 2011, via an RCI exchange with my WorldMark membership. The week was wonderful with sunny days and record setting temperatures.

The resort location is absolutely beautiful! The setting of the hotel/apartments is over looking lovely Grundlsee. The studio unit that we had was very well equipped. The partial kitchen had every thing we needed for our week's stay ... except perhaps a microwave. The apartment was very clean and had a lot of storage. It was a nice treat to get fresh towels and a new supply of toilet paper about halfway through the week. Take the boat ride on the see/lake ... actually, do the three lake tour. There are hiking trails - so, lots of outdoor activities for everyone and all levels of fitness. The indoor pool is a delight. There are many other cute little villages to visit in the Salzkammergut region, including: St. Wolfgang, Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, Fuschl, Mondsee and Gmunden .. and Salzburg is only a little over an hour away. We would rate the resort a 5 Star, but for these picky items: the staff could be more friendly to English speaking guests - as they seemed to be with those speaking German; we repeatedly asked for the lounge chairs, but after 3 requests and not receiving them - we gave up; having to pay for WiFi is not only expensive, but pretty sad in these days and times; and check-out time should be noon.

This was not our first visit to "The Sound of Music" region - we love the area and will go back, but as a warning to Americans - the area (Europe in general) has good very expensive for us - food, gas, car rental, attractions are all very pricey ... on top of it all this area has also added pay parking almost everywhere - we paid 5 Euro (or about 8 dollars) to park in Hallstatt for 3 hours and over 24 Euros for 6 hours in Salzburg (more than San Francisco!) - and pay toilets usually costing 50 to 75 cents, but up to a Euro ... so a buck-50 to use the loo ... which in my opinion is way too much!

Room Tip: Wish I knew!

“Much to offer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

Spent a week at Mondi Grundlsee 17/09 - 25/09 after a week in Bas Gastein. Our studio was like a large double with a well equipped partial kitchen (no oven/microwave) and a good bathroom. Plenty of storage space and a small table outside with two chairs. We also got a couple of deck chairs from reception. Worth asking for a lake view - so, so beautiful. Used the very effective heating when chilly and when the weather was lousy we took advantage of the spa and lovely pool which wasn't used very much. Worth the 6 euros for a robe. Being out of season a lot of the guests were fairly elderly which was fine for me as I could be first to get to the on-site shop to collect my fresh rolls in the morning (pre-ordered). They also gave out a sheet with ideas of what to do in the day, trips etc.

Definitely need a car. Nice towns and villages within half an hour's drive, many lakes (some huge and others very small) and rivers, walks to meet every level of interest and well marked. Nice boat trips and you can even rent bikes from reception. A lot to do and if it rains, use the spa and relax in comfort! All elements of service were very friendly and professional.

Catering in is so easy with very well stocked supermarkets everywhere. There is a good one with a super bakery in the Grundlsee village just two minutes drive away. Otherwise make for a Spar or Billa perhaps as you drive in on the 145? Austrian food is meat and potatoes with salad and tastes great!!! Their soups, a meal in themselves, are wonderful. The general standard of cooking is excellent.

Couple of gastronomic suggestions: Typical Gasthaus with an English menu - Stockl in Grundlsee. Try the Schnitzel - we ate there 3 times! In the juice section of a supermarket look out for one by Rauch made from Rhubarb (if you like Rhubarb!) - lovely and not available here. Finally, and you'll have to bear with me - drive, bus or take a boat to the other end of the lake. 15 mins easy walk to the next smaller lake and there is another Gasthaus (the only one) which specialises in the lake trout, Wow - fresh daily and perfectly cooked with almonds, garlic etc. - our best meal in a wonderful setting (not cheap at about 25 euros each including drinks but worth it. Walk back along the river. Small farmers market worth a visit in Bad Aussie (Friday).

This is a wonderful place to stay for a fairly relaxed holiday. It is in the Austrian 'lake district' and stunningly beautiful. Grundlsee is a little off the beat and track which we prefer but only about an hour and a half from Salzburg. A good hotel and lovely destination.
