“Has potential..BUT needs to do a whole lot more.”

This hotel has such great potential but wasn't as good as expected! Attended a winter wedding here recently and a lovely wedding it was. Upon entering the hotel after the ceremony I was very impressed with the decor, christmas decorations and the champagne reception for wedding guests. The wedding party organised a string quartet to play in the reception area which added to the occasion, felt like a posh London hotel! The view outside is amazing but as it was winter and an afternoon wedding ceremony guests didn't really get to appreciate it.
The dinner however was a different matter, the air conditioning was on - in Decemeber in Donegal madness!! It even blew out candles on the centre piece candelabra on a few tables. Several people asked for it to be turned off and staff seemed unsure how to work the system, and it was on again later in the evening. This made me and a good few others feel ill meaning several hot toddies were needed to warm up inside the hotel. The service was REALLY REALLY slow at the dinner, very long intervals between clearing away courses and bringing out new ones. The Frank Kennedy music festival was on locally that weekend and so there was a lot of people in eating in the hotel bar - so the staff were stretched, but even so, priority should have been given to the wedding with regards to food+service. I also overheard several people who commented on the lack of second helpings of veg at the dinner which is pretty much standard at weddings in Irish hotels. The bar staff in the bar and receptionist were friendly but largely disinterested and again service was not what it should have been.
I attended another wedding at the hotel previously and did not encounter these issues, so maybe with the time of the year and holiday season things are hectic but its service and staff attitude which can make a business attractive or not.

Room Tip: Wear a scarf in the function room, it's cold!!!

“An amazing experience and a dream winter wedding”

On behalf of my wife and myself I can only say thank you to the staff and the management of An Chuirt for giving us an amazing wedding experience last week (Start of December). From the moment we met the manager, Lewis, a year and a half before our wedding, we knew we had made the right choice. At no time did we have to worry about our wedding, which was great because we were organising it all from Dublin. We met a number of times and never did Lewis say no to any of our ideas. Instead, he offered us great advice and suggestions as to how we might improve our day but we never felt that he was trying to take control of our wedding.
We stayed at the hotel a number of times before the wedding because it was a long drive in one day and it turned out to be a great opportunity to get to know the staff and the hotel itself and every time we stayed there it was a fantastic experience. On our first meeting Lewis said to us that once we would reach the hotel on our wedding day we would not have to worry about anything and he was true to his word. As soon as we stepped into the hotel, after the ceremony, we both knew that we could relax completely.
My wife and her bridesmaids stayed at the hotel the night before wedding and found it very relaxing. On the morning of the wedding they all went to the beauty salon that is attached to the hotel. They all said that it was great that they didn’t even have to leave the hotel to get their hair and make-up done.
On the day of the wedding the hotel exceeded our expectations – the setting was beautiful inside and out. We took photographs outside the hotel on the morning with the beautiful scenery of Mount Errigal in the background. When we arrived back to the hotel after the ceremony the hotel looked great with all the Christmas decorations. Our guests from across Ireland and Europe were incredibly impressed by the hotel and things only got better with the dinner. The food was amazing and was only matched by the speed of the staff – it was like watching a well oiled machine. Lewis was on call throughout the day and provided helpful advice as to the running order of the speeches and general wedding etiquette. After the band stopped playing we moved out to the lounge area and had a great session on the sumptuous leather seats and couches and were singing and playing music to the small hours of the morning.
In the morning the guests who stayed at the hotel couldn’t get over the standard of the rooms and flexibility of the staff in relation to late check out and breakfast. Parents who had kids at the wedding said it was great that they could use the kids’ play area and the pool.
In short:
The staff were great – they were always friendly and professional and did everything they could to make our day special.
The food was amazing on the day of the wedding and in the bar and the restaurant when we stayed there on the previous occasions.
The hotel was great value for money.
I would happily recommend An Chuirt to anyone, either for a wedding or a vacation. Many of our guests said that they would be making a return trip to this beautiful part of Donegal.

“Great potential... but not fulfilling it!”

Got a great rate at this hotel and was looking forward to a weekend break amidst the beauty of North West Donegal. The weekend was great, but have mixed views about the hotel.

Although, I can't say my experience was bad, there was, unfortunately, a number of things that disappointed.I really loved the look and feel of the hotel when we arrived and it is a peaceful, comfortable and clean hotel. The rooms were fine and we had no problems with the facilities in the room. However, however, however.....

Gripe number 1: We went for barfood. The barman was perturbed because we took him away from the Man Utd/ champions league match on the TV. We were a hindrance to him. We ate ok-ish food with two TV blaring away (a common malady in many Irish hotels) with the barman and a few local barflys cheering on. On the Saturday night, we were told abruptly we could not get food in the bar 'because their is a function on and the chef is too busy". Hello!

Gripe number 2: The Leisure centre: It looks amazing and potentially could be so good. However, the sauna and steamroom were out of order and the jacuzzi and pool was freezing. Some of the water jets were also broken. One of the locals in the pool told me this is a common problem and thought we'd have better luxury if we jumped into the North Atlantic! The mens dressing rooms were dirty and grubby. My partner used the gym and she said it was just ok. The place looks a bit neglected. A pity, because potentially it could be a fantastic leisure centre.

Gripe number 3: Reception: Fridays receptionist was very much a Dr Jeckell (friendly, helpful, perfect) but Mr Hyde must have being working on Saturday (impatient, unfriendly, unhelpful).Generally, service could be better, and there was a feeling that there was a skeleton staff working in the hotel.

Gripe Number 4: Service: Ate in the dining room and the food was really good, but we encountered another phenonemon of Irish hotels - the young, hungover, badly trained waitress. She told us her head wasn't right cos she was out till all hours and the service was thus ropey and haphazard. The Donegal accent and friendliness made up for the shortcomings.
I
f the hotel sorted these problems out, the Gweedore Court would be a great place to stay. The way it is at present, I would say it is just OK.

Useless information: The hotel has a buffalo herd and there is a John Wayne on a horse on display in the carpark. Why? I do not know.

Room Tip: As far away from the function room if there is a wedding/party/function on.

“Stunning location, friendly”

I stayed here for one night for a conference being held in the hotel. I had a huge room, with two double beds and loads of space. The bathroom was large as well but with no bath just a shower as it seemed to have been designed as a disabled-access room. There was plenty of wardrobe space and hangers, a nice desk for working and a separate table-and-chairs for tea. Negatives about the room though were (1) no safe in the room although there was a safe available at reception (2) awful dreadful small hairdryer built in to the drawer - I don't understand how hotels get away with this, I really dislike it (3) no wifi, only available in the public areas. Also the wifi didn't extend into the function room where the conference itself took place so that was rather awkward. (4) blankets rather than duvets on the bed - but on the plus side the sheets were deliciously soft.

The food at the conference dinner was amazingly good but huge portions so not good for the waistline! Breakfast was grand, apart from the coffee which wasn't great at all. The bilingual staff were lovely and it was nice to have the opportunity to speak Irish.

One of the main attractions was the gorgeous location of the hotel, with lovely views out to the front. All in all though, even the negatives were outweighed by the nice traditional country hotel ambiance of the place and I'd definitely like to come back.

Stayed for 2 nights in September, was supposed to be 3 but there was a problem with our booking so we had to stay at a nearby b&b the 1st night. i really wish we had have stayed at the b&b all 3 nights as our room at an chuirt was the smallest room we have ever stayed in in any hotel. barely a foot between the bed and the walls on either side. the room was very very cramped, tired and dated. the majority of staff were rude and uninterested. Misplaced our camera 1 night and asked at the reception the next day if it had been handed in. receptionist snapped that nothing was handed in, couldn't have been ruder or any more uninterested. i would never cross the door of this hotel again as the b&b was far superior, breakfast, service, views and the space far better and half the price into the bargain. the hotel, because of it's location obviously think they dont need to work too hard to impress guests and can charge through the nose.
