We took advantage of the January deal of £140 DBB in a Courtyard Suite. A member of staff showed us to our suite. It is the best room I have ever stayed in (the one shown on the website), huge, beautifully furnished and the bathroom was fantastic.
After a walk in the grounds we popped into the main hotel and had a drink in front of a beautiful open fire. Unfortunately I couldn't have my chosen mojito as they did not have any fresh mint.
We relaxed in our room for a few hours before dinner. The room felt quite chilly and we couldn't get any warm air to come through so I rang reception, they said they would control it from their side and after about 15 minutes the room started to warm up. The bath was lovely and the low level spot lights are a nice touch instead of full ceiling lights, very relaxing.
At the clubhouse we opted for the set menu (£19.50/head) included in our rate and the food was fantastic. Couldn't quite manage to finish our puddings as the portions were huge!
Had a very comfortable night's sleep and made our way to the clubhouse again for breakfast. The options just had to be taken off a menu, therefore no choices of cereals / juices etc to choose from before the cooked option, but this didn't bother us and I can honestly say that the 'full english' was probably one of the best we have ever had a hotel. The ingredients were high quality and served piping hot.
We really didn't want to check out.
I don't know whether they will ever have such a good deal on again, but this was an absolute bargain.
Special mention to Linzi in No19, very friendly, good service etc.
Matfen Hall was my favourite local hotel (staying in a Feature Suite in the old part of the hotel), but I think Close House has managed to edge into the lead. I loved the fact that you could stay in a beautiful hotel, but eat fantastic food in a less formal environment.
Room Tip: Room 32 in the Courtyard if possible
