“A lovely wedding venue overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Burythorpe House is a stunning venue to have a wedding, with truly beautiful surroundings and offers very good food overall. We found the staff to be friendly and accommodating, although at times we did feel they were disorganised on the run up to the wedding, however on the day itself everything ran smoothly.

We must point out that from the day we booked our wedding reception at Burythorpe House and the 9 months that followed, our wedding coordinator changed and the chef also changed 3 times. Although this was no fault of the hotel, unfortunately this lead to a lot of confusion over our wedding menu and some requests that we had made, and we felt this was compounded by the lack of communication from the hotel on the matter.

Our wedding co-ordinator Rachel was good, accommodating to our requests and a really nice person. She did have to take over from our past co-ordinator, which led to some confusion and meant that we did have to chase things up and seek confirmation however we are sure this won’t be an issue going forward.

Our main issue was with our wedding breakfast menu. Creating our own menu was a selling point of this venue for us, however it did not run as smoothly as we would have hoped. We had a meeting with Chef number one, a tasting session with Chef number two and Chef number three, who we never met, cooked the food on the day. Only a matter of weeks before the wedding we still did not have a finalised menu or price per head and were chasing frequently for this. When we had finally agreed on a menu we felt apprehensive and all of the confusion over the issue had resulted in a lot of undue stress and anxiety on the weeks approaching our wedding. On our day the food was delicious overall and well presented. We had beautiful canapés, a wonderful meat eaters wedding breakfast menu and a delicious rustic evening buffet. Our vegetarian option was unfortunately a disappointment and very dissimilar to the dish we had tried and agreed to in the taster session. Also we had requested vegetables to be served with the meal but they did not arrive, so portions did feel a little sparse. Saying this we were happy with the food served and found it to be to a high standard.

We must compliment the staff as they were very fast, efficient and friendly and went above and beyond to make our day flow without a hitch. Even when the groomsman decided to ‘decorate’ the bridal suite, the staff were very quick to sort this out before we had to set eyes on it.

As a bride I chose to stay at Burythorpe House the night before the wedding and it was a beautiful venue for a bridal party to get ready. We had a stunning suite, which made it was very special. I did oversee the preparing of the marquee in the morning and did have to make a few requests as certain elements were not quite right but they were dealt with straight away. I am very relived I was there as had I not been I would have been disappointed when I arrived had these issues not been rectified.

One piece of advice I would pass on to anyone who has booked Burythorpe for their wedding is to make sure you get absolutely everything in writing(even the smallest details), as you do not get the bill until the day after your wedding. There were issues with our bill but thankfully we just pulled out a copy of our correspondence with all the agreed requests and sums and the issues were quickly resolved without any upset.

The hotel rooms are very nice and it is lovely to have exclusive use of the hotel. So much so that we stayed at Burythorpe the night after our wedding and had a very romantic relaxing time in the Newburgh suite, which we would highly recommend. Although it was very cold at times and we did have to call reception a couple of times to request that the heating be put on and for some reason the room received no maid service even though we stayed in the same room for two nights. Maybe they were just leaving the newly weds alone. We had a beautiful evening meal the day after our wedding and the breakfasts were delicious.

All in all we had a fantastic wedding and would like to thank all that helped, Burythorpe House is a beautiful venue to hold a wedding, which on a whole we would recommend, if they can iron out the issues we experienced then we think it will be perfect.

We too arrived to a freezing cold room. In fact the whole hotel was cold as the heating "comes on at 3"!
We gave it an hour to warm up then decided to give up. We went home. To be fair we were offered a warmer room but it was too late by then. We've had many winter stays here and it's never been like this before. We won't be returning sadly.

“Dissapointing, second time around.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

My husband and I were looking forward to our return trip to Burythorpe House, after we had an enjoyable short stay in the spring. We had booked a luxury room, a treat, as we only have short breaks away. We were greeted by a lovely member of staff who showed us to our room. The room was extremely cold, so cold that we were forced to go down and sit by the fire while the room warmed up - not a good start, how much thought is needed to put the heating on for the day of arrival? We had booked for dinner as we had enjoyed it so much on our previous stay, how dissapointed we were! The menu was not as we remembered. It consisted of an Amuse Bouche, starter, fish course, choice of two main courses and a dessert - there was the option of cheese, but this involved a surcharge. We did not consider this adequate. Over our three night stay, we only actually had the choice of three main courses, the first night the choice was duck or pork, the second it was pork or halibut and the third nights choice was duck or halibut. Further to this, there was no bread offered on the second evening (we had to ask for bread and were told that none had been left for that evening, after persisting, some arrived, we assume from the pub?) and our choice of sherry and wine was not available. We would consider very carefully before staying at Burythorpe House again and would need to receive evidence that things had changed before we did.

“Lovely hotel, shame about the food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

After spending a very enjoyable few days at Burythorpe House Hotel earlier in the year, my wife and I were looking forward to a similar experience when we booked a 3 night break at the end of November. Our room was very comfortable and gave us views of the beautiful surrounding countryside and the staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. We were so looking forward to enjoying a pre dinner drink in front of the fire while we chose our evening meal and so disappointed when we discovered that there was barely any choice to be had. The menu offered us an amuse bouche, a starter, a fish course, a main and a dessert and the only choice was the vegitarian option instead of the main course and cheese instead of the dessert. We expressed our disappointment to the waitress and after a brief wait were offered grouse instead of venison (not a good choice if you are not a fan of game) and after another five minutes or so we were told that pate was also available. The menu informed us that this was a "fine dining" experience, the fact that the starter, fish and main courses were all severely under seasoned and all served with rocket leads me to suggest that it was not fine dining at all. In the dining room my wife and I sat in the window and observed a man in chefs whites tearing back and forth in his car several times during the evening and when we questioned this were informed that chef had run out of various items that had to be fetched from the local pub (the dining room was less than half full at the time).
Although still with no choice, the evening meals improved on our second and third nights (we were told that there was a different chef), although it was unfortunate that our request for champagne for our pre dinner drink on our final night could not be accomodated as they had run out, similarly our choice of red wine was unavailable and they had run out of bread to be served with the meal (there were only 4 people dining that night, how long does it take for a professional chef to make 4 bread rolls?).
I should say that breakfast was excellent, all that you would expect of a country house hotel, but, as much as my wife and I would like to revisit Burythorpe House we will not do so until the chef (or the owners) realise that guests require choice to complete thier dining experience.

“The romance of it all”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

Wonderful staff who could not do enough for us, so friendly and accommodating. A gorgeous room with views across the fields, lovely big bay and spotlessly clean. Amazing bath tub - on claw feet - it was a real treat to have bubbles up to my neck whilst sat up. The evening meal was lovely as was the breakfast. I would highly recommend this hotel - lovely lounge area - very homely, with a roaring log fire. I like a firm bed - and it was soft - not a criticism at all just a personal preference. The bed linen and pillows were of the highest quality as were the toiletries in the bathroom along with the towels and matching pair of bathrobes. We will be back - Amanda and Richard
