“Never Again!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I took my daughter for an open day at Canterbury university so thought I would try Travelodge!
Booked the weekend before and paid Cancellation insurance because we were travelling from South Devon and were worried about the snow and ice conditions at the time.
However, when I enquired about cancelling the night before travelling, I was told I had a "Saver rate" and the insurance would not be valid and that I should contact Head Office whose address is unsurprisingly "Sleep Hollow" in Bucks.
Customer service would not answer the phone, (On a friday!) and reception promised to get them to ring me which never happened. I eventually made a decision to go and arrived in Canterbury after a 6 hour trip.
On arrival the male receptionist was very helpful and supplied extra bedding and tea making supplies. The room was sparse and the bathroom was not very clean. It was -8 degrees outside and the heater took about 3-4 hours to heat up the room.
Should have stayed at the Holiday inn on the other side of the road! - Never again!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

“Not as we thought”

After booking then reading the reviews we were very worried, but it was very good, clean with lovely staff who are very helpful, we had a problem with the hot water and could have changed rooms but did not wish to as we had settled in, but she offered us another room to shower in which we did. This was very good value for money and we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: You can not see you car from the hotel and it it very dark when walking to the little chef

“Not cheap enough”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We booked this as a stop over in Canterbury, its difficult to find, unless you have a satnav, and even then its a pain. Car park very dark and dingy, i didnt feel my car was safe there.
Its off the main road, so no traffic noise. But at the end of the day, its a travelodge, not exactly known for their comfort and high standards.
If I had got a deal on the price it wouldnt have been so bad, but we paid £49...and that in my opinion is £39 too much...I wont be returning.

Room Tip: I dont think there are any good rooms !

“Very dissappointing...”

Agree with the theme shared by other reviewers.
Stayed for a night on our way to France from Scotland 10 days ago.
Our groundfloor room was very dated, somewhat grubby and did smell......foosty.
We did only paid £12 on a deal, but even so, this was very poor and we wont be back, ever!
No complaints about the staff, seemed friendly enough.
Didn't like the Little Chef nearby, but really didn't want to drive to find food after a long day, so most of their custom must be from the 'captured' market of Travelodge guests.........I guarantee Heston Blumenthal has never set foot in this outlet!!

“Worst hotel I've ever stayed in!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2011

We stayed here on a stopover on our way back from France. Having driven six hundred miles with two teenagers we just wanted a comfy bed and a shower. When we arrived at the hotel we asked if there was anywhere we could put our bikes. The receptionist said "not really" and wasn't particularly helpful. We didn't want to leave our bikes in the carpark because it was badly lit and didn't look the best kind of area.

The family room had a double bed and a pull out sofa bed. The double bed was fine but the pull out bed was absolutely vile. Covered in stains. i don't think the md of Travelodge would have his children sleep in a bed like that.

I don't know where to start with the rest of it, we had mouldy curtains, mould on the inside of the windows, the walls were filthy, the bathroom was dirty, the shower didn't work.

All in all it was disgusting, we paid £35 for this room which sounds cheap but if we hadn't just driven all that way we would have happily lost the money and stayed elsewhere. I have stayed in the Premier Inn nearby and it was a much better experience, i would recommend to anybody, if you are staying in this area, pay a bit more and get something better.

I e-mailed Travelodge when i came home and complained about the state of this place. I received no reply so I e-mailed them again. Eventually I received a reply from the regional manager who said that he took on board my comments but said that he didn't think the rooms were unclean, just "overused!!! What does that even mean???
