“Were previous reports referring to the same place??? - we found it Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2011

The welcome we received could not have been better and the evening meal was superb and excellent value for money. This does make me wonder whether the previous two reports were referring to the same Inn???

The location was perfect for us as we were looking to escape from busy lives and here you could not fail to relax and sleep like a baby. My husband's late father would have described the location as one where "you could hear the birds change their minds!" as it was so off the beaten track. If you are looking for City action then this Inn is not for you but if, like us, you would like to unwind in the countryside and eat excellent food then it is.

We enjoyed our stay so much we booked a revisit at the time.

“Not worth the retour”

We did not stay at the Inn, but visited the pub for lunch. We arrived 2 minutes after 2.00 and were told that lunch was served until 2.00 only. It was obvious that the owners were not serving, or if they were it makes it even worse! So, we could have a sandwich. I chose the morrocan sausages, which turner out to be one sausage cut in 4 and some very nice bread. Great tasting, but the price was high. We ordered the cheese plate which was meagre and another dish which I can't remember only 2 weeks later. All in all, expensive, small quantities, but nice tasting.

Generally the place is slightly plastic, but does have some country inn charm remaining. However, it is difficult to find and well off the beaten track and is certainly not worth the detour.

“Need to look to their laurels!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

We chose the Star Inn for an overnight stay on our way home from holiday, attracted by its reputation for good food and quiet location. We arrived quite late on a chilly late September evening, but had a warm welcome in every sense - cosy welcoming bar with open fire, pleasant landlady and very friendly, bubbly waitress/chamber maid.

Unfortunately, our room was a real disappointment. The three bedrooms are in a separate building (which is not in the first flush of youth and has not been well maintained), so you enter the bedroom straight from the outside, which must make cleaning difficult. However, first impressions do count and to be greeted with a filthy doormat and wallpaper that was beginning to peel did not impress. The room itself was not perfectly clean (dead spiders and cobwebs in the wardrobe) and the bathroom did not sparkle! The shower leaked, the porcelain toilet handle was chipped and the basin plug chain was broken. Our main complaint, however, is that neither bedroom nor bathroom were heated prior to our arrival and they were slow to warm up, leaving a general impression of slight dampness. There were no spare blankets, although they were willingly provided on request.

As for the food, it was mixed. An excellent succulent steak, but with dry accompaniments and bland sauce and a bouillabaise which was tasty enough, but light years away from the classic recipe. The excellent home-made bread provided at dinner was replaced by Tesco's Finest at breakfast and the breakfast pancakes were again dry. The standard of cuisine being aimed at deserved linen napkins, not the flimsy paper ones provided.

Overall, I'd say that the licencees had let the standard slip a bit - particularly in the bedroom department! It's a lovely inn in a good setting and if they want to keep their reputation they need to smarten up their act quickly. At present, I'd say that it does not give good value and regrettably could not fully recommend.

“Outstanding food and a warm welcome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2009

We stayed at The Star for my parent's ruby wedding anniversary and had a lovely time. We were attracted by the rave reviews of Justin the chef's cooking and most certainly were not disappointed. He is the owner's son and cooks outstanding food with fresh local ingredients. The pub and accommodation was somewhat scruffy round the edges but certainly warm and welcoming. Lesley was more than happy to have our baby monitor behind the bar as we ate and reheat toddler food on request.

At times it did however feel a shame that such fine food did not have the setting it really deserved. Using the table linen so well cited in various reviews and refreshing used wine glasses would have added the finishing touches his cooking deserves.

“A great place for beer, wine & food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2008

A beautiful sprawling pub in the heart of the Hampshire countryside. Tastefully decorated with deep comfortable sofas that tempt you to stay far too long (they have rooms, if you are won over) but the main reason to come is for the food.
The menu, different on each time we have been is inventive (savoury bread and butter pudding, for example) and wonderfully prepared & presented by chef Justin Newitt.
Keep room for the desserts, they are to-die-for
