“The perfect English escape”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

This pub-inn is the best blend of Olde England charm and the British sense of fun. Next to the quintessential cricket ground, frequented by bell-ringers, light-pollution free skies let you see the stars, mobile phones cannot intrude into this little oasis of peace, almost zero traffic noise at night just the odd sheep bleeting in the distance. Retire to a lovely sleigh bed and a big fluffy duvet with a book from the free library. Great beer, superb chef making exceptionally nice food you can look forward to each day - once you have eaten here you won't want to eat out on your day-trips, you'll want to come back to eat at the inn's restaurant, and the price is truly good value. This is where to come to get away from it all, and just a stones-throw from the fabulous Salisbury cathedral and Stonehenge circle. Another great day out is a drive down to Bovington tank museum - the Star Inn makes a great base to look around this part of the country. Yummy brekkie, Handy car park. Friendly family staff and the locals are welcoming too. If you seek a lovely quiet restful stay in a place that has authentic unpretentious genuine quality, here it is. It made my holiday and I'll stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for the double with the sleigh bed.

“Lovely pub in a beautiful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

Lovely setting (overlooking a beautiful cricket field)in a very quiet rural area. A very inventive menu for a country pub, with none of the customary "gastro pub" pretentiousness. The rooms are simply furnished but comfortable with free Wifi. Some visitors may find the location too remote, because of the maze of country lanes which need to be navigated to get anywhere - eg the New Forest is only a few miles as the crow flies, but about 30-40 minutes by car.

“Great food & a warm welcome”

We arrived late to a warm welcome and a log fire in the bar. Lovely quiet area. The dinner was fantastic with a lovely menu and beautifully cooked food which made up for the disappointing accommodation. Lovely full English breakfast before we left.

“Were previous reports referring to the same place??? - we found it Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2011

The welcome we received could not have been better and the evening meal was superb and excellent value for money. This does make me wonder whether the previous two reports were referring to the same Inn???

The location was perfect for us as we were looking to escape from busy lives and here you could not fail to relax and sleep like a baby. My husband's late father would have described the location as one where "you could hear the birds change their minds!" as it was so off the beaten track. If you are looking for City action then this Inn is not for you but if, like us, you would like to unwind in the countryside and eat excellent food then it is.

We enjoyed our stay so much we booked a revisit at the time.

“Not worth the retour”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

We did not stay at the Inn, but visited the pub for lunch. We arrived 2 minutes after 2.00 and were told that lunch was served until 2.00 only. It was obvious that the owners were not serving, or if they were it makes it even worse! So, we could have a sandwich. I chose the morrocan sausages, which turner out to be one sausage cut in 4 and some very nice bread. Great tasting, but the price was high. We ordered the cheese plate which was meagre and another dish which I can't remember only 2 weeks later. All in all, expensive, small quantities, but nice tasting.

Generally the place is slightly plastic, but does have some country inn charm remaining. However, it is difficult to find and well off the beaten track and is certainly not worth the detour.
