We chose the Star Inn for an overnight stay on our way home from holiday, attracted by its reputation for good food and quiet location. We arrived quite late on a chilly late September evening, but had a warm welcome in every sense - cosy welcoming bar with open fire, pleasant landlady and very friendly, bubbly waitress/chamber maid.
Unfortunately, our room was a real disappointment. The three bedrooms are in a separate building (which is not in the first flush of youth and has not been well maintained), so you enter the bedroom straight from the outside, which must make cleaning difficult. However, first impressions do count and to be greeted with a filthy doormat and wallpaper that was beginning to peel did not impress. The room itself was not perfectly clean (dead spiders and cobwebs in the wardrobe) and the bathroom did not sparkle! The shower leaked, the porcelain toilet handle was chipped and the basin plug chain was broken. Our main complaint, however, is that neither bedroom nor bathroom were heated prior to our arrival and they were slow to warm up, leaving a general impression of slight dampness. There were no spare blankets, although they were willingly provided on request.
As for the food, it was mixed. An excellent succulent steak, but with dry accompaniments and bland sauce and a bouillabaise which was tasty enough, but light years away from the classic recipe. The excellent home-made bread provided at dinner was replaced by Tesco's Finest at breakfast and the breakfast pancakes were again dry. The standard of cuisine being aimed at deserved linen napkins, not the flimsy paper ones provided.
Overall, I'd say that the licencees had let the standard slip a bit - particularly in the bedroom department! It's a lovely inn in a good setting and if they want to keep their reputation they need to smarten up their act quickly. At present, I'd say that it does not give good value and regrettably could not fully recommend.
