“An Unexpected Delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

After stopping by and looking at a room at the nearby 'ecological village' which was overpriced and uninviting, almost to a depressing degree, Rio Bec Dreams was a most welcome surprise.

Our cabin was immaculate and very tastefully decorated. The jungle trail to the bar, office and dining areas felt like we had stepped into an exciting adventure of discovery of the ancient Maya world.

The service was the best we encountered in our month-long journey through Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatan, and the food, including excellent international cuisine dinners, delicious breakfast and a most convenient bag lunch for our day at Calakmul ruins was well above the standards we found elsewhere.

They even provided a few xeroxed sheets of their own personal guidance for Calakmul, what to look for where, which pyramids are a 'must climb', where to take the best picture from, etc.

It was, to sum it up, far more than we expected and by far the highpoint of our trip.

“A Wonderful Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Once located this was a great find, although we would have preferred a more attentive welcome & pre-arrival service.

Having said all that Rick was very knowledgeable of the local area including Calakmal & the other sights in the area. The food was wonderful although once again (like many places in the south of Mexico), no credit or debit cards are taken, cash only so stock up.

“An Absolute Highlight of Our Trip”

Rio Bec Dreams is ideally located for those looking to get a bit of history during their time in the Yucatan. There's no denying it's rustic and out-of-the-way, but that's exactly the point, and exactly the charm of the place. Not to sound off-putting, but if you're looking for some posh all-inclusive...what are you doing in Calakmul?

We stayed in La Luna, which was comfortable and clean. The cabin had charm to spare. I've read people complain about the noise from the highway, but that's not under the management's control, and I think if they put the cabins farther back from the road people would complain about bugs and snakes instead of car noise. Anyway, I barely heard traffic during our three-night stay.

The food is tasty, and I thought it was quite fairly priced, especially considering how little choice there is in the area. The staff was all very friendly, too. And one of the real treats was discovering how cool our fellow guests were.

Of course, if you're coming to Rio Bec Dreams, it's probably to check out the archaeological sites nearby, and there's no end of top-notch places to go. Since this was our first time to Maya country we hired Diane and Dan, a friend of the owners, to give us tours. They were both personable, flexible with their schedules, and extremely knowledgeable.

A note to LGBT travellers: My husband and I had no worries at Rio Bec Dreams.

A word to the wise: If you bus it out to Xpujil from the touristy areas up north, get an early ticket to Chetumal or Campeche, and then a connecting bus from there. The hours that direct primera buses have going through the Calakmul area are pretty awful, but there are lots of short-run buses from closer major cities.

I would strongly recommend Rio Bec Dreams to anyone hoping to get a flavour of Mexico's deep history.

“Oasis in the middle of the jungle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Rio Bec Dreams sits about 100 yards off the main road running through the Mayan ruins sites across the bottom of the State of Campeche west of Chetumal. The back cabins are far enough off the road that road noise in not an issue. They are comfortable units. The breakfast is very good as is dinner. Interesting guests are here as all have a common interest, seeing some of the best, isolated Mayan ruins in the Yucatan region. Worth staying two nights if you want to see Calakmul. We came in from Campeche, saw the well preserved frieze at Balamku, checked in and still had time to see Chicanna and Xpujil.

Room Tip: The cabanas, toward the back of the property would get you further from the road, although there is...

“Lovely, personable place in jungle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We had the cheapest bungalow in Rio Bec so it was not very big, but it suited us very well. Room was clean, with fine beds. You are in the middle of the jungle though so dont expect anything luxurious(except for the food, which is amazing). Personable staff, with great advice on what to visit. Trip with Rio Bec to calakmul temple was once in a lifetime experience. It is pretty much a daytrip but it is great. Huge templecomplex, with monkeys and birds all over the place. We have been to around 10-15 templecomplexes but this was by far the best. And there were max. 30 tourists I guess on this HUGE site.
