“Spot on for a friendly drink”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

Warm, friendly staff and locals, kept me and my friend entertained for the two evenings we spent in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. My friend and I did not eat/stay in the Golden Lion, but we had a few drinks and enjoyed our time spent in the traditional English pub :-)
The staff did not hesitate when i asked to put my phone on charge using their power, nor did it cost me!

“A North Yorkshire Gem”

I stayed here for two nights in order to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks. The trek was grim due to heavy rain all day. But the hotel was warm, cosy and friendly, with a great bar. And was a pleasure to get back to after the day. My room had a smart en-suit bathroom, and a comfy bed, television, and a great view of Pen-Y-Ghent from my window.
I could'nt recommend the Golden Lion more.

Stayed at the Golden Lion after a long wet day doing the 3 peaks..We were in the Bunkhouse at the rear of the pub...The bunkhouse is basic but clean sleeps 15, with 2 toilets & 2 showers (showers very hot, just what you need after a hards days walking)The pub was very busy when we stayed as there was a big charity event on at the time..But you didn't have to wait to long to get served..Monica the polish girl behind the bar worked her little socks off keeping us plied with ale !! The only problem was the landlady Patricia !!! Every time we tried to go to bed ,she would insist on us having another drink,we finally got to bed at 2.30am (I think she just wanted some company) lol Only joking she was trying to get rid of us for hours WHAT A GREAT HOST!!! ..I have read some other reveiws on the goldenlion bunkhouse and i really dont know what people expect for 12 quid.. I got a bed a hot shower and a bog 20 yards form the pub front door, about the right distance after 26 miles walking the hills..Hope to visit the Goldenlion again soon

“Great no frills accomodation.”

Our group contained six males for Friday and Saturday night for accommodation whilst we did hiked the three peaks. We stayed in the bunk house and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and hospitality at the Golden Lion. The Bunkhouse was a bunkhouse, it wasn't a five star hotel - there were 15 people in one smallish room which was used for sleeping - the two showers had hot water. This was everything we needed, so £12 a night there can be no complaints. A drying room would be useful as we got rained on for 12 hours and there were no areas to dry our wet kit in. There was an outdoor washing line that some used the following day, but if it is still raining then this would also be no use.
No one in our party had any complaints with the food, I really enjoyed mine (veg lasagne). The best thing about it was that once you had been served your food you could stack your plate up with veg, potato, etc and get a proper calorie fill, which is obviously important if you are burning 3000 calories walking!
We didn't try the breakfast, but enjoyed a perfect brekkie at the Pen-y-ghent cafe which opens at 830. Just over a fiver for a great breakfast and £1.60 for a PINT of tea. Great stuff!
The bar in the evenings was busy and the staff remained efficient and gave as good service as can be expected whilst keeping a busy pub operating smoothly.
I would stay here again as it is great cheap no frills accommodation and is perfect location for the Three Peaks walk.

“Disappointing recommendation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2011

I stayed together with friends in the 3 Peaks Bunkhouse, which is located at the back of the Golden Lion Hotel. The Hotel's pub was recommended to us by the Bunkhouse's owners as a convenient place to have a meal after the whole day of walking. We thought it was fantastic that we didn't have to worry about driving somewhere else after completing The Three Peaks Challenge. We were really looking forward to a relaxing evening in a local pub.

We decided to give the pub a try a night before the walk. We made it there for approx 8pm (Friday). We had a look around, then concentrated on the menu displayed above the bar. We checked whether they were still serving food and they were. We made our choices, but then a staff member approached us and informed us that we could only choose from the carvery (limited by that time). We asked if one of our party could have a veggie burger (included on the black board, but not part of the carvery) as he was a vegetarian and there was no vegetarian option on the carvery. The staff member double checked with the kitchen and said that it was not a problem. We paid for the meals at the bar, received tickets and headed off for the carvery.

The choice on the carvery, size of our portions and quality of the food were very average for the price paid (just under £9 pp). The two of us, who chose carvery, agreed that our meals were overpriced. The 3rd person had much worse experience. The veggie burger arrived surprisingly quickly. The meal again didn't look particularly impressive for the price paid. Our friend took a bite, looked underneath the bun and...he nearly spitted the food out of his mouth! The bun was covered with mould! He immediately took the meal to the bar, where he was told that 'fresh bread was delivered this moring'. He was offered a replacement meal, but he decided not to take a risk and asked of a refund. He ended up eating a bag of peanuts, while the two us were finishing our meals.

The beer served in the pub was fine (however, my pint of Landlord was served in a Black Sheep glass, which I found really annoying). The waiting on staff were two grumpy lads, looking less than 16.

After having such a bad experience with food and customer service at The Golden Lion Hotel, we decided on the following day to drive (despite of walking all day) all the way to Settle to a lovely pub, which we knew from our previous visit to Yorkshire Dales. We were served hearty portions of tasty meals for the same price. The staff was very attentive and my real ale was served professionally.

Room Tip: Visit for a pint but go somewhere else for a meal
