This is an excellent resort: the staff are all delightful, the food is first-rate, and the setting is pleasantly rural. But their anti-mosquito precautions are inadequate, and considering the prevalence of mosquito-borne illnesses in Bali, this is a significant failing.

Other similar villa resorts, eg the Royal Pita Maha in Ubud, use anti-mosquito fogging daily, spray inside each villa nightly, and provide mosquito nets for each bed, but the Damai does not. Additionally, in our villa the sliding doors to the pool area fitted badly, leaving large gaps at the sides and the top and bottom for mosquitoes to enter -- which they did. As a result I suffered numerous mosquito bites on several nights. I lived in the Far East for many years and know mosquitoes and their habits, and I do not consider that the Damai treats this issue seriously enough. Providing insect repellent for individual guests, as they did for me, is a simplistic and ultimately ineffective answer.

Dear Mr & Mrs Pringle
We are glad that you so enjoyed our resort – we certainly enjoyed having you - but sorry that you suffered mosquito bites during your stay.
As an organic resort we from time to time encounter challenges where we have to reconcile our sustainable policies with the comfort of our guests. And though we strive to find a low impact solution, the comfort of our guest is our main objective. The guests need not suffer from our green aspirations.
While we do not doubt your discomfort, the insect bites you endured is a complaint we hear very, very rarely.
Our location on our hill has the advantage of a pleasant breeze, which also helps keep the mosquito population very low. Even though we are surrounded by rice terraces and spice plantations, we have far fewer mosquitoes than they do in more humid locations such as Ubud or the tourist centres in South Bali. As you rightly point out many properties in these areas make liberal use of chemicals and fogging. Some are even driven by necessity to use heavy fogging daily.
To do so in a property with our rural location would require dramatic fogging that would be dangerous to the health of our staff, guests and neighbors, as well as very harmful to the rich bird life in the parks around our villas. Daily fogging also builds resistance in the mosquito.
We do of course take your comments as well as this matter seriously. We combat mosquitoes through a variety of measure inside the rooms and advise guests to keep their doors/windows closed after 5pm to prevent mosquitoes from entering the room. Also during turn down service we ensure the room is bug free with a suitable mosquito killer and switch on the electrical insect repellant, switch on the fan and air condition to keep the room cool and free. Besides this we also do strategic fogging every fortnight to kill the larvae but not the adult mosquito. However I do take cognizance that with all this measures put in place, one or more insects managed to penetrate our defenses.
We also have noted about the gaps in the door to the pool, which we will review what can be done for this. It is a wooden door that expands and contracts based on the weather from rainy season to hot summer days
Warm regards, ---

The Damai is simply wonderful. I stayed there for 3 nights / 2 days and felt fully relaxed and refreshed. The customer service is superb - no detail left to chance. The staff are very thoughtful, speak excellent English, are extremely professional (but very friendly) and nothing is a problem. The rooms are stunning - beautifully designed and furnished. The food and treatments are amazing too. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a high quality experience in a stunning part of Bali. The three hour taxi ride from Denpasar (US$50) was worth the time (and was a good way to see some of the island). This is easily one of the best resorts I've stayed in. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

We stayed in Damai a few years back and fell head over heels in love with the place. So it was with high expectations - and also a bit of dread: was it as good as we remembered? - that we came back to this special gem. It was JUST AS GORGEOUS AS WE REMEMBERED. The food: perfect, from breakfast to the sweet little Balinese cakes they leave in your villa as a good-night gift. The villas: absolutely gorgeous, huge pools, beautiful decor. The spa: SO good - had it every day. Will we be back? You bet.

I went to Bali with my son after 16 years and appreciated this paradise more this time than when I did 16 years ago. We decided to get out of the hustle and bustle of the south and head north where the real secret Bali is. We stayed at Lovina and the best resort there was Damai. Lovina is famous for Dolphin watching and we also did tours of the hot springs, Buddhist temple and even the Ulu Danu Lake. They were all very easily accessible and worth the visit. The highlight of the stay was the Damai itself, this place is truly amazing and the staff there the best I ever experienced. The tag line for this hotel is hard to find hard to leave which truly fits the place. If you did not have a good driver, you may get lost, so ask for directions from the resort before you head there. Once you are there, you simply wish not to leave. I stayed at a pool villa which was very nice and I also told the staff that I did not eat pork and beef and they made sure all the way this was followed diligently. This was indeed a very memorable stay after 16 years, so much so that my son wants to go back again in Decemeber.
