“A Warm Atmosphere and a Good Vegetarian Meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Gissons is local to us and we visit regularly. Since the new owners took over the restaurant has improved greatly and we often pop in for a "senior citizen" special lunch or a Sunday lunch - especially their nut roast which is excellent! The carvery vegetables are well cooked, not over cooked, and the choice is interesting. Vege gravy is always supplied and the staff are courtious and attentive and a pint of Doom Bar goes down well. There is plenty of parking space and in the summer one can sit outside to eat.

“What a Pity!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Potentially a lovely old property with character and charm, reality is very dissapointing, although the staff were friendly and polite. Real Ales mostly not available, restaraunt offers poor qulaity at fair prices although the carvery is kind of o.k. Won't be rushing back despite it being recommended to us. I'm told the accomodation has all been recently upgraded, perhaps they'll start on the food next!

“Lovely hotel - great price!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

I stayed at the gissons on business and wasn't disappointed.

I stayed in one of the rooms at the top of the house, spacious and modern.

Great service, friendly staff, great price and lovely breakfast too. For £55 this is a great quality hotel.

“OK service, food below par”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We only ate at the Gissons for a quick Sunday carvery whilst passing by (saves cooking as it was getting late) The outside looks like a traditional olde worlde pub by the side of the A38/M5 - good access off the road.

Big car park and tidy inside, although typical old style pub trying to be gastro in it's decor. Leather modern seats and stipped light wood bar etc, only contradicted by the trad carpets and black mock beams etc. Anyway, I'm not an interior designer but a paying customer. The carvery was £8.95 per person for a standard, so not one of the cheapest. We were expecting good things.

The barman/manager was very polite if a little loud (i.e the only voice you can hear in the outlet when eating is his shouting across to the kitchen staff) Friendly chap but too loud.

Then the big moment....the carvery! Well, where do i start. I would reccommend this as a £5 carvery level, not the £8.95 they are charging. I always hope that if you're paying for feed out and about, it is a better standard than you can cook at home. I'm no chef, but the following reasons were why the food was a lower standard:

Yorkshire Puds - dry, hard and repel gravey. Been out for too long me thinks
The beef was excellently cooked and done medium, so this was the best part for me.
The roasted potatoes were greasy and mushy
The chef had put some really strange concoctions together, like potatoes, onions, garlic, tomatoes and other"stuff" as he put it himself. Sounded like, and tasted like leftovers piled together - horrible.
The veg was mixed up with sweetcorn mixed with the couliflour etc
The parsnips were deep fried - defeats the object of a "roast" dinner, i.e we didn't sign up for a fried sunday lunch

I ate the beef, some of the yorkshire pudding and a couple of potatoes, but wont be going back here.

I'm not being too harsh on them as the service was ok and the staff polite, but average at best sums this place up.

We don't reccommend

“Really good sunday lunch!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

My husband and I have been here twice in the last few months for Sunday Lunch. I normally steer clear of carvery's, as not a great fan of serve yourself food that has often been left out for hours!), hoowever I am now a convert. The carvery at the Gissons is different, really fresh and good quality with lots of choice and you can have 2 of 3 meats on offer. The food we have had has been very tasty and we think good value, compared to other places (although be aware the carvery changes price at different times of the week). On one occasion we visited with grandparents and the staff made a real fuss of them which was nice.
