We only ate at the Gissons for a quick Sunday carvery whilst passing by (saves cooking as it was getting late) The outside looks like a traditional olde worlde pub by the side of the A38/M5 - good access off the road.
Big car park and tidy inside, although typical old style pub trying to be gastro in it's decor. Leather modern seats and stipped light wood bar etc, only contradicted by the trad carpets and black mock beams etc. Anyway, I'm not an interior designer but a paying customer. The carvery was £8.95 per person for a standard, so not one of the cheapest. We were expecting good things.
The barman/manager was very polite if a little loud (i.e the only voice you can hear in the outlet when eating is his shouting across to the kitchen staff) Friendly chap but too loud.
Then the big moment....the carvery! Well, where do i start. I would reccommend this as a £5 carvery level, not the £8.95 they are charging. I always hope that if you're paying for feed out and about, it is a better standard than you can cook at home. I'm no chef, but the following reasons were why the food was a lower standard:
Yorkshire Puds - dry, hard and repel gravey. Been out for too long me thinks
The beef was excellently cooked and done medium, so this was the best part for me.
The roasted potatoes were greasy and mushy
The chef had put some really strange concoctions together, like potatoes, onions, garlic, tomatoes and other"stuff" as he put it himself. Sounded like, and tasted like leftovers piled together - horrible.
The veg was mixed up with sweetcorn mixed with the couliflour etc
The parsnips were deep fried - defeats the object of a "roast" dinner, i.e we didn't sign up for a fried sunday lunch
I ate the beef, some of the yorkshire pudding and a couple of potatoes, but wont be going back here.
I'm not being too harsh on them as the service was ok and the staff polite, but average at best sums this place up.
We don't reccommend
