“Cheated and Let Down”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2010

We had a confirmed, deposit paid booking to stay at Hall's Country House on the Giant's Castle Road, outside Mooi River in the Kwazulu-Natal Midlands, South Africa.
On arrival, we found the entrance gate on the road, firmly locked, with no sign nor indication that it was closed for any speciaific reason. There was no bell, intercom nor buzzer at this gate for contact to be made with the property to request entry. We called the telephone number quoted in their confirmation to us, with no reponse and no facility to leave a message. We had with us the current issue of the highly respected 'Midlands Meander' guide in which they are listed, and here we found a cellphone number and fax number, both of which we called, again with no response nor message facility. It was now dark and we were stranded, and after several calls to accommodation establishments in the area, eventually secured alternative acommodation. In spite of emailed requests, requesting s refund of our deposit, and at the very least, an explanation of why we were subjected to this treatment, we have not had the courtesy of a reply, and needless to say, no refund of our deposit. We find it sad that all that is promised on their wbsite: www.hallscountryhouse.com and in their "Midlands Meander' listing, obviously just cannot be believed.

“100 year old house, 100 year old facilities”

We stayed only about 30 mins in the 2 rooms allocated. One room was not twin as confirmed on booking and a definite tut because we requested it to be altered.
The rooms were shabby as was the small "extensive garden".
The cole water tap swivelled when turned on to make coffee. The coffee mugs were stuck to the tea tray and when prised off had coffee/tes stains on the rim and inside. There was only one sachet of decaff in each room, a few creamers and tatty looking tes bags, nothing else to choose from,.Then we looked at use by dates, these ranged from Dec 2009 back to 2007 or 2008.

After several attempts to get all this sorted we decided our health may be at risk if we stayed for dinner and breakfast so decided to leave. We were booked in for 3 nights and had paid 50% deposit which we had to surrender, health came before money on this occasion.

We found out locally that there were rumours of the property going to auction, I would seriously not advise anyone to book this 4* accommodation, I am loathe to give it 1*

We have been in touch with the South African Tourist Board and the owner blatently lied about our complaint. We feel so stongly about this Hotel and would hate anyone else to go through our awful experience.

“Loved it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2009

I liked them. Very much. And the dogs. That’s why I go for guest houses because there’s much more interraction with the owners and staff than you get in a hotel. And I liked all the homemade stuff – and the hand-written labels. Food was brilliant. A 3-course vegetarian set menu 4 nights in a row? Normally it’s a plate of roasted vegetables or an omelette. Really good tourist information – I didn’t do anything I had planned to do! Really enjoyed the relaxed interaction in the bar (great bar, by the way) and the restaurant - with the owners and all the other guests (and the dogs). For me it was a 5* experience. I’ve had 3 days and 4 nights of champagne air, great comfort, food cooked with the freshest ingredients and with skill.

“Overrated!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 April 2009

Couldn't agree more with the above review (by YozzaLondon_England). Our experience exactly! This place has been completely missold by the proprieters. This is definitely not a 4* establishment and the owner is very annoying.

Luckily, after one night we found accommodation at the nearby Hartford House, which is outstanding (highly recommended)! Of course, Hall's would not refund our deposit.

Avoid like swine flu!

“Don't stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2009

This guest house has, I believe, been missold by the proprieters. It is claimed to be a 4* country house with restaurant but I would rate it as 2*. The quality of the room we were given was very reasonable - large room and comfy bed - but the bathroom was very dated, with mouldy windows and the cheapest possible bottles of soap, shampoo etc (home-made with handwritten labels). However, that was the least of the problems. Reception when we arrived nearly made me drive away. Two VERY large white alsation dogs met us - with a lot of barking - which was unerving as they were large and threatening (and they were a permanent fixture in the guest quarters - following you into the bar and the restaurant). I do not want to be smelt or barked at by dogs in what is supposed to be a hotel. And dogs in the restaurant is not clean (especially not large, longhaired dogs). For dinner, there is no choice of menu - the owner just decides what she is cooking and then tells you that night what you're having. So "restaurant" is an inappropriate description. Nor does she have any prices for any of the food or alcohol she sells you in the bar or restaurant so you either have to ask (embarrassing) or get a surprise when you check out and see the bill. Finally, and most annoying, was the fact that the owner would come and interrupt your conversation six or seven times (no exaggeration) during breakfast and during dinner with comments about how wonderful her cooking was, and how fresh all the ingredients were. By the second day I dreaded going to breakfast/dinner as she would be ready to talk at us throughout the meal. Not professional. If I'd known of an alternative nearby that had vacancies I would have had no hesitation in checking out early.
