“Frozen out”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Recently stayed at the Sun Hotel for our anniversary. Paid extra to upgrade to the King size room. Bad mistake. The room was freezing and though we were given an extra heater the room never reached a decent temperature and on the final morning even the shower was cold. We were given excuses about the plumbing and power cuts but it didnt seem to affect any other rooms. When we asked for consideration of the extra we paid we were asked
" Why will that make you warmer ".
As other people have stated the hotel itself is nice though there are lots better in Windermere and Ambleside that dont incur a taxi or bus ride out of an evening.
Should have realised when we arrived in the rain at 2.40 and had to get in through a back door only to be told we couldnt get in the hotel until 3pm. Had the impression they would have left us in the rain if we hadnt found the back door. When we returned from an evening in Windermere on Saturday night at 10.15 we were astonished to find the hotel and bar all closed for the night.
The only good thing about the place was Jeanette behind the bar who was very helpfull.
Unfortunately she is let down by inept management who have little idea about the concept of customer service. Maybe we just got them on a bad weekend but you have been warned.

Room Tip: Dont go in the King size room unless its summer.

Thank you for your review we appreciate all feedback.
On all our confirmationemails it does state that hotel opening times
& check-in times both being 3pm. If you arrived early at Tesco
to find the front doors closed prior to opening times would you
enter through the loading bay?
On your arrival on the Friday afternoon when Jeanette showed
you to your room and explained to you the fire doors she stated
the times for last orders along with the fact that if the bar is empty
from 9.30pm we will close the bar hense on your return on Saturday
evening we had closed at 22.10pm when the last customers left.
We accept that the room was cold & as far as we where concerned
it had been rectified by the raditors being bled & additional heating
supplied we also offered a further heater which you left on reception
as you felt you did not need it. Had you said thr room was still cold
we would have addressed it further. Even though you where asked
throughout the rest of your stay if everything was OK you never stated
you where still cold. We cannot rectify what we do not know about.
Again with the shower had you told us it was cold we have a system
that reheats within15 min & you could have enjoyed the lovely power
showers the rest of the guest had enjoyed. There had been a powercut
that has tripped the boiler hence it had not reheated.
I am sorry that you felt your stay of 2 nights B&B, a 3 course meal, a bottle
of wine in a 4 star Inn over a weekend in Windermere poor value @ £189.00.
You would struggle to get this value staying at the local youth hostle purchasing
your meal and wine in a restaurant.
Once again thank you for your review

“Superb meal in cosy surroundings.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We had a meal at the Sun a few weeks ago and enjoyed it so much that we decided to go back just before christmas to sample the Festive Fayre menu. We were so glad that we did, at £15.95 for 3 courses it was the best value meal we have had in a long time.
We were seated next to a cosy woodburner, the christmas decorations were gorgeous and the food was fantastic.
The owner and waitress were friendly and helpful, the bar/restaurant were busy, making for a good atmosphere.
The starters, mains and desserts were faultless, the three of us had lamb for our main, and it was the nicest we've tasted anywhere.
My daughter is a big fan of cheesecake, and on both visits there has been a different one on the menu, both gorgeous.
We will definitely be going back, I would recommend to anyone.

“Excellent friendly hotel”

My wife and I have just stayed in the Sun for 2 nights. Having spent all my working life travelling round the world, staying at many excellent hotels, I can honestly say the Sun is up there with some of the nicest I have stayed in. No, its not a 5 star hotel, but its the best I have stayed in for the price.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, especially Janette, who made us feel very welcome. The room we stayed in was bright, well furnished, very clean and had nice views of the surrounding countyside.
The bedroom had a modern flat screen TV, a hairdryer was provided, as were tea and coffee making facilities.
We ate in the hotel both nights we stayed and the food was very good, as was the breakfast menu. There was also a selection of some good wines.
The hotel is well situated for travelling around the Lake District and is only 10 minutes walk from the shores of Lake Windermere.

“Lovely Food”

Another great meal at The Sun Hotel, we ate there on Sun night (4/12/11) and as always every perfect. We first started eating at The Sun Hotel by chance back in August 2011 and have been going there every since, I am taking my staff there for our Christmas party as I know they are going to be impressed. Another thing I feel I should mention, this place is great value for money their prices are reasonable when we first walked into this place I thought it was going to be pricey but it's certainly not. Always clean and the staff are very accommodating I give this place 10/10 and more than happy to recommend it to family, friends and clients, well I already do.
