“An Enjoyable Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

This was a stopover on our South Africa Trip. We stayed here for for 2 nights after flying to Joburg from Cape Town en route to safari in Waterburg.
The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming and we were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a Junior Suite with Club Access, due to my husband's Platinum status. The room was extremely spacious, with 2 large flat screen TVs and a separate sitting area. The bathroom was relatively small and only had a shower - no bathtub. The towels were not as fluffy as I would like! Despite the size of the room, the only mirror was in the bathroom.
The cocktail hour in the Club was a little disappointing, only wine and soft drinks were offered and there were no canapes or snacks. The service was also a little erratic. On the second night, my husband had to go and find someone and then the drinks took over 10 minutes to arrive. As far as I could see, there were only 3 other people, so it was hardly busy!
Breakfast was served in the fresh restaurant. There was a good selection of cold food and the cooked breakfast was A la Carte.Again, service on the second morning was a little slow.
We ate dinner at the Butchers Block. The food was great (fillet steak amazing) and the wine was properly chilled. A rarity on our African trip!
There was a small but pleasant pool area outside, where we spent several peaceful relaxing hours. There is also a spa and gym, which we did not use.
The Circle Bar is very hip and apparently extremely busy at the weekend. It was relativelty quiet during our stay, but I loved the beaded booths with colour changing lighting and the cocktails were great.
To sum up, this is a very pleasant hotel to spend a couple of nights in Joburg.

Dear Crowne Plaza Guest,

We would like to thank you for taking the time and effort to provide us with your feedback on your recent stay at our hotel. It’s very much appreciated!

Guest’s perceptions of the service they receive whilst staying at our hotel is the only true yardstick we have for measuring whether or not we have met their expectations. We can therefore assure you that your feedback is being used constructively to maintain and improve, where necessary, our guest service standards and facilities offered.

We do appreciate your constructive comments especially your observations on the service in the Fresh Restaurant and Priority Club lounge. We are most concerned by this shortfall in such an important restaurant for the Hotel and will certainly do our utmost to reinforce the management, staff and kitchen to ensure the standards we seek are achieved.

We would like to welcome you back very soon.

Warm regards,

Allan Clingham – General Manager

“Great hotel”

Fantastic hotel in a very nice area of Jo'burg. Breakfast buffet had everything you could ask for. Asked for the "silent" floor and never heard a pin drop. Rooms were quite roomy, bathroom was a good size and water pressure was good. Rooms were clean, and service was excellent. A mall is within easy walking distance with sundry restaurants, etc (10 minute walk). I will stay there again when I'm in Jo'burg in May.

“Great Johannesburg Hotel”

Recently stayed at the funky modern Hotel in a safe district of Johannesburg - Rosebank. Reasonably priced accommodation. The rooms were quite large and comfortable and the Butchers Block Restaurant was very good. Breakfast was fantastic and the staff were quite helpful. The Hotel also has a great swimming Pool. Just a 5 minute walk to a large Shopping Mall and Train Station.

Room Tip: The south tower rooms have a better view of the City.

“Very Nice Hotel: I Definitely Recommend It”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

I stayed at the Crowne Plaza for 2 nights and had a very enjoyable stay. The hotel doesn’t really look all that impressive from the exterior, but I found the inside to be quite upscale for a Crowne Plaza. I felt that this hotel was above the standard of Crowne Plazas in the United States.

I don’t know much about Johannesburg and its various neighborhoods, but I liked the location in the Rosebank suburb. Although the hotel was somewhat gated from the surrounding neighborhood, it seemed like a nice enough area. The hotel is within walking distance of the Rosebank Mall, and I didn’t feel unsafe at all walking there at night. We walked up to the Grillhouse for dinner one night and enjoyed the dinner and mall. It also wasn’t far of a drive from the hotel to Sandton, which is perfect to do business in the area or enjoy the upscale shopping and dining there as well.

I was very impressed by the hotel as soon as I walked in. At check-in, staff members came around to offer a tray with complimentary drinks, which got our stay started well. The lobby is very modern, as is the entire hotel, but in a tasteful manner. There are lots of seating areas in the lobby, some raised, some sunken, and all with interesting furniture. It felt more like a lounge than a typical hotel lobby. There are a couple of enclosed seating “pods” that are popular, which I believe are associated with the lobby bar.

I had one of the standard rooms with two twin beds, and it was very nicely furnished. The rooms have clearly been recently renovated. They’re very calming, decorated mostly in white and gray, which I think gives the rooms a sleek look. The only odd decorating feature was the photo of a person’s shoulders and back above the beds. The bed was quite comfortable, and the bathroom had nice upgraded tile work and fixtures. My only real complaint would be that standard rooms are definitely on the small side, especially the bathroom. I found the bathroom to be very cramped, despite being nicely equipped. The rest of the room was also somewhat small, so you may want to upgrade to a deluxe room to get more space. The room also could have used more lighting and outlets. At night, it was quite dark, and it was hard to find unused outlets in the room to plug in just a phone charger.

We had breakfast each morning at the hotel buffet. The breakfast was generally fine, with good service, but I thought the food selections could have been a bit better. I thought the restaurant was trying a bit too hard to be fancy, when most people just want a basic breakfast. Maybe it’s because we’re Americans and not used to breakfast in Africa, but several people in my group commented that the breakfast buffet, despite having a lot of options, had very few basics that were appealing. The omelet station was always very crowded and slow moving, which eliminated that as an option when in a hurry. Overall, I would probably do breakfast here again, but it wasn’t my favorite.

I generally had good experiences with the staff at this hotel as well. I arrived as part of a group on a bus, and the valet staff immediately offered to unload everything for us and bring it into the lobby, which they did very efficiently. The same went for the valet staff at the end of the trip. They wouldn’t allow anyone to load the bus him or herself at the end. The front desk staff was also very efficient as well, so I left with a good impression of the hotel and its workers.

Overall, I was very impressed by the Crowne Plaza. I expected a decent hotel, but found one much more modern and plush than expected. The rooms were well appointed, albeit small, and the lobby made for a great place to sit and relax. The hotel staff and location were good as well, so I would recommend the hotel for sure. Small rooms and a breakfast I wasn’t crazy about wouldn’t be enough to keep me away from this hotel if I am ever back in the area in the future.
