We planned our stay at Hiwinui to introduce us to sheep country and break up the drive into Wellington. The stay was so much more a destination than a stop along the way. Jan and Dave Stewart have an incredible ranch that they are willing to share with travellers. David took us out with Wally, their australian shepard and we got to wtach him herd his flock of sheep, while David introduced to his land and his family, dairy and town. The Stewarts built the Estate with two guest rooms a little over ten years ago, they rival any 5 star hotel I have stayed in! Soft robes, jetted showers, a litttle frig filled with complimentary snacks. we opted for a home cooked meal from Jan...the best dinner of our trip..wine from her brother in laws' winery, perfect pink rack of lamb, home made dark chocolate ice cream...all served with crisp linen in front of a fire! After dinner, Dave set a fire outside for us so we could soak in the hot tub in front of the fire after dinner! The entire estate is beautiful and romantic. No wonder so many " New Zealanders" choose to get married at Hiwinui. Everyone should stay here on their way to Wellington...it's a lovely point to stop. The next day it is an easy drive through Greytown and the rest of the wine country to Wellington! We're planning our next trip to NZ around a stay at Hiwinui! (It's also a great place to run, lots of fun country roads.)
