“Poor Christmas Lunch”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We decided to treat ourselves to a festive lunch at this hotel on Christmas Day 2011. Food no more than average canteen lunch, and the service was truly awful! Temporary waitresses appear to have been engaged for the day, all of whom were pleasant but totally lacking in direction. I do not expect to have to ASK for the wine list on Christmas Day, nor to see waitresses standing around having a chat while tables need to be cleared. The head waiter(?) wore an old shirt, unpressed scruffy suit and dirty shoes, and spent his time wandering around with a copy of the guest list on a board. (Quite what the purpose was is not clear?). We were invited to be seated at 12.45 but the first course was served about 1.20, and the remaining courses took an age to appear. Our backs were aching after two and a half hours and we left at 3.15 before the coffee and mince pies arrived! Never again!!

Thank you very much for super negative Christmas Day luncheon feedback, it's interesting to know that bizarrely enough I received a lovely letter outlining the same day.

'Dear Sir

CHRISTMAS DAY LUNCH

A belated sincere thank you for such a lovely enjoyable luncheon on Christmas Day.
Everything about it was superb, the timing excellent.
The food was marvellous and we were so relaxed and felt completely at home. Please pass on my personal thanks to all staff, the chef and kitchen staff.

Yours Sincerely

Mrs L Conway'

“Mixed experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We stayed for 2 nights for a family wedding, but probably wouldn't have booked it just for the 2 of us. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised by the great waterside location and unusual layout of the hotel. We had booked a standard double and initially quite liked our courtyard opening (external door) room. I overlooked the rather tired decor & grubby carpet as the quirky, non-corporate look was quite appealing.
However, that night my views changed completely as we had the worst night's sleep in a hotel we've had in years. The room had underfloor heating which we turned off as it was very warm in the room however it seemed to have had the effect of heating the bed. The base of the bed was wooden box on the floor which we can only assume somehow trapped the heat from the floor. It became extremely uncomfortable despite all sources of heating turned off and the window open (in January!). Added to this was a background low-frequency droning/humming noise all night which was impossible to ignore and drove me to distraction. During a very long and unpleasant night we each seriously considered sleeping in the bath (the bathroom was cool and quiet) or the car! There was also an odd smell, especially when the room was hot. I have since read that dogs are allowed in these rooms which makes me wonder about the smell.
When we complained to reception the next day they did not seem overly surprised. Apparently the noise was likely to have come from 2 refridgeration units in the storage area next to our room. But I must say that the hotel's response to our complaint was excellent - understanding and helpful. They upgraded us at no extra charge to a executive lake view room in the main hotel which was a 'normal' hotel room with no heat or noise related problems. It was like being in a different hotel and and on our second night we slept well with no complaints.
It was a large wedding and the hotel seemed to manage it well despite relatively few staff (some of whom had very limited English).
On the whole the food was good (in the restaurant, for the Wedding Breakfast and the daily cooked breakfast). My only food gripe was that a lot of dishes seemed very salty.

Room Tip: Avoid the standard rooms

“All about the location.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

Purchased a one night stay with via Groupon, room was ok nothing special but you are not going to get a decent room as a groupon customer I guess. No toilet roll, dead insects in the shower tray, no phone to ring down about toilet roll or the lack of wine on arrival as promised with the deal so initially very disappointed.

Went for dinner and the menu is fairly limited for choice, approx 6 choices for each course, starter was pretty good, I ordered steak cooked rare for my main course and it duly turned up medium with no offer of any condiments I asked for English mustard, with my steak going cold and no mustard in sight asked another member of staff and he duly returned with french mustard, gave in and just ate it as dinner just about cold, my partner did have the Lamb and said it was very good. Drinks ordered at the table and wrong drink turned up although changed it no quibble.

Other guests seemed to be getting equally frustrated with wrong meals/drinks turning up with one chap giving up and going out to fetch a sandwich!!!

Breakfast ok but only scrambled egg available and again no condiments offered.

When checking out they tried to charge me for our complimentary drinks that were included with the deal.

Plus points are the fab location and the friendly staff.

I would not recommend this hotel, looks from the outside that the management is very weak as such basic stuff it is easily recitfied and would make this is cracking place to stay.

There is absolutely no excuse for bad housekeeping and this has been dealt with - more stringent room checks have been called for.

Its such a shame that you felt that you were not offered your wine, we allow guests to have this from check in or before or during their meal -they only have to ask.
Some waiting issues seem to have occurred, and there is no excuse for lack of mustard at the correct time. I can confirm that the evening wasn't as dramatic as you are making it out to be -but understand how you feel if a wrong drink appeared. Please accept my apologies for this happening.

There is a Breakfast menu available on tables noting that you can have your eggs cooked anyway you want them, and condiments at breakfast are normally readily available -sorry if this wasn't the case.

“Nice location poor drink supply!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

Stayed at this hotel last night, room clean and presentable tea coffee kettle etc ( but noted no biscuits??) as this was one of the courtyard rooms that accept dogs, wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly suprised.
A little tired looking in places but clean and comfortable apart from the pillows.
The meal was booked for a set time but they kept us waiting over half an hour longer ( in the bar area) where I attempted to buy drinks I asked for Archers - none Campari - none and Midori - again none!! Despite being on their list!
Ended up having red wine with the meal.
Meal was ok salmon a little too salty but generally fine.
The staff were pleasant and the hotel is in lovely surroundings .
Ok for an overnight or short stay.

Thank you for your feedback, and due to your comment about the pillows I have investigated and ensured that they be replaced with new ones.
The drinks situation unfortunately is unforgivable and due to this I have spoken to the supervisor responsible who has been given the daily task to ensure our bar stock is always readily available.

Food wise I have had a meeting with chef and he has also taken your feedback to channel back to his brigade.

Hopefully we shall see you again in the future.

“Fortuitous last minute arrival”

Early evening, looking for somewhere to stay, road signs led us to this hotel. We were offered excellent discount rates. Small but very comfortable room, especially for one night. Excellent dinner and breakfast.
