“Doesn't quite make it ..”

This could be so much better with a few tweaks... Stayed here for two nights on a holiday..with hotels from Relais Chateau. The things that are missing are all small on their own but when rolled up left you with a feeling of a slight frustration..it could go from good to great location so easily. So starting with the good things, great location, fabulous view from the hotel room window over the RIver Lot. What let it down..we had booked a package which included wine tasting and wine with dinner. On arrival into the hotel no mention of this was made ..just that we had missed the wine tasting that night. Our room on night one, which was traditionally French, huge bed. Went down to dinner ... Nobody greeted us, eventually went and found someone, ordered a glass of champagne which had to be
changed as it was visible flat. The food in the restaurant was extremely good, the wine in the package, just turned out to be one bottle, so not was expected.. Bit of a rip off, not quite what we were expecting. Following day did the wine tasting but again that was not really a wine tasting, it was trying one small glass of one bottle of wine. Changed rooms into a modern refurbished one, which was very good. Dinner on the second night was good, same issue with wine, so we paid extra to have a White with starter and then a bottle of the chateau's dessert wine. Service through out tried hard but just seem to miss it, just needs a final bit of polish to make it a great deluxe location.

“Great place, lovely staff , excellent restaurant”

Me and my wife stayed there for 3 nights. The location is terrific, the Lot river is wonderful, the castle is a real time travel experience. The staff is very friendly , the room was great and I loved the flat screen tv hidden behind the mirror. The restaurant was excellent a bit expensive, but it worths every penny spent there. The waiters , the sommelier and the maitre were very friendly and love their work. I would suggest free Internet in the rooms, now very common in many hotels in France.

“Expensive but fantastic break”

Stayed for 4 nights and took our 3 young children and had a fantastic luxury break. From the start every member of staff went out of their way to be helpful and welcoming in particular the sommelier and the staff in the restaurant/bar. Lots of small touches that made it a luxury stay such as bathrobes in the right sizes for all of us including the children. We had a very very early start on the last day and were not expecting to get anything before we left but they insisted that the night concierge bring us coffee at least. When it cam there was also juice, yoghurts, cake We had two interconnecting rooms - a suite with a terrace outside and a small double room. The views from the windows over the river were stunning. Fantastic food in the reaturant although could do with a bit of variation to the menu as we had tried eveything after 4 nights. Lovely pool if a bit cold. Only downside very expensive.

I have had the good fortune to stay in several chateaux in France. The Chateau de Mercues is among the best. The rooms are spacious and very well appointed. The grounds are inviting. The meals are superb. I highly recommend this property for anyone who is looking for a special getaway.

“Dirty, unbelievably bad service, over priced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

Arrived early evening - carried our bags from parking area (in complete view of 3 staff standing in reception), no help offered. Checked in, chap begins showing us to our rooms which are on the first floor (2 flights of steps) and I had to stop and say could you please carry the bags! Get in the rooms - one smells so musty we have to ask to be moved, the other one hasn't been cleaned.....the towels in teh bathroom are dirty and look like they have just been folded back after the last guest used them and there is a dirty glass and half drunk bottle of water in the room, toilet broken and has constant flushing.....no-one even bothers to come to try to repair it and there are no alternative rooms. we go down for an apertif before dinner - we order champagne - not even an olive or a peanut is served with the drinks! When we check out, same routine, no assistance with luggage offered, no apologies for multiple problems. Rooms and hotel very dated, service terrible bordering on non-existent and so over priced. Would definitely not return
