“Outstanding - a delightful place to honeymoon”

We stayed with Isabel during our honeymoon in 2009, and this review has been too long in coming. However, we share the views of most people here in saying that our stay was superlative in every way. We stayed in 2 different rooms (we visited Quebec at the start and end of our trip) and both were excellent, a great size, and uniquely and tastefully decorated. One was en suite, the other had a shared bathroom and we had no problems getting access to a bathroom when we needed one. Isabel gave us excellent recommendations for the area (a delectable fancy burger restaurant with local beers that we visited twice, and the summer Cirque du Soleil spectacular). Of course, what I remember are her incredible breakfasts, which were one of the highlights of our entire honeymoon. She elevated my standards for breakfast at any establishment, including my own home. Thank you Isabel for such incredible hospitality. To visitors to the area - if you can stay at Au Trois Balcons, please do, you will not be disappointed, and you will likely form memories there that will last a lifetime.

I only stayed two nights but wish I could have stayed longer. Really comfortable, great breakfasts, and a warm, friendly welcome. Can't ask more than that, and all in the most beautiful city in North America! Thanks for a great time :)

“No reason to stay anywhere else in Quebec City”

Rather than repeat all the superlatives that others have written here, I'll just quote from the travel blog I wrote about our trip to Quebec (http://mainelywinenews.blogspot.com/2011/11/short-excursion-to-quebec-city.html):
"We stayed at a B&B – Aux 3 Balcons – which was in a great area that was well outside the usual tourist route but was still within walking distance of everything we wanted to see. For anyone going to Quebec I’d definitely recommend Aux 3 Balcons. The rooms are wonderful, the ambience is fantastic, the place is on a very quiet street yet is convenient to everything, and the proprietor, Isabelle Ouellet, is a former tour guide who provided us with a wealth of information as well as 2 fantastic breakfasts."

“Changed my idea of the B & B experience most positively”

We were planning a two-night trip to Quebec City. After reviewing Aux Trois Balcons on Trip Advisor, we e-mailed Isabelle with inquiries. She got back to us promptly, and we booked the Charlevoix since it had a private bath and was available for our two nights. Isabelle explained that Friday morning she would prepare our breakfast, but Saturday she was going to be gone on her own outing so would not prepare breakfast. She knocked $10 off the price of our room for Friday night because of this.

Aux Trois Balcons is on Saunders which is one block off Grande Allée and intersects Cartier - both streets with shops, cafes, bistros, pubs, and restaurants. Grande Allée is the street you come in on and also goes to the old city center. Traffic was easy to navigate. Parking places on Saunders were not easy to find, though. When you do park, you have just 90 minutes before you need to move your vehicle to another spot. So ask about parking when you call since Isabelle does have a couple of parking spaces behind her building.

When we arrived, Isabelle sat us down with a city map and marked off approximations of nearby places that might interest us - cafes, pubs, restaurants, bistros, pâtisseries, and so on (Morena Epicerie Traiteur has delicious Italian pastries). She also has a lot of materials available about things to do in QC as well as the province. She let us have a parking spot behind the house so we left our car there till we left for home on Saturday. She gave us keys to our room and the building asking that we make sure to lock the house door when we come in or leave.

Our room was on the second floor across from the breakfast room, and we found it to be quiet and comfortable; we had no problems with noise or any other bothers during the night. The room was large, clean, and nicely appointed. The queen-sized bed was very comfortable and there were lots of pillows and blankets. There is a good sized closet with plenty of hangers and a large night table with drawers in which you can put clothes. There is an armchair as well as a small table with a couple of chairs. The private bath had a tub with shower and was nicely done up with tiles. The towels were not cheesy and thin, but good quality. My husband said it was the best shower he has ever had with a good force and plenty of hot water.

There is a sitting room for guests with tv , books and comfortable looking sofa and chairs, but we did not spend any time there. The breakfast room has probably six tables with chairs done in an attractive decor. Isabelle asked that we stay out of the kitchen.

The breakfast on Friday was delicious. It consisted of a basket of lightly toasted and buttered breads with strawberry jam followed by a main course of brioche with ham, tomato, poached eggs, and cheddar cheese lightly broiled and arranged on the plate with slices of watermelon and a cup of fresh fruit. There was a choice of orange juice, cranberry juice or a melange of the two; and for 'dessert' there was an apple baked with cranberries, almonds, and maple syrup. And, lots of coffee. It was all very good and filling, and it sustained us until the evening meal with only a beer during the day.

There is a bottle opener on a table in the hallway for opening your bottles of wine. Isabelle also gave us a couple of wine glasses and forks, plates, and napkins for our evening wine and pastries. There is a small refrigerator in the foyer on the first floor where guests can put anything they want to keep cold.

Because Aux Trois Balcons is so well located, we found that we did not need to use bus, car or any other transport but just walked everywhere we wanted to go in the old city area. Isabelle assured us that the city is very safe so we felt quite comfortable walking at night.

All and all, we had a very pleasant and comfortable stay at Isabelle's and would go there again. This experience totally revised my notion of the B & B. I recommend Aux Trois Balcons to those who might like the type of comforts and experience I have described.

“Comfortable place to stay in urban setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

We stayed at Aux Trois Balcons for only one night during our brief visit to Quebec City.

We found out about the B&B from tripadvisor. The factors that made us consider this place instead of other options in Quebec is the location, the pricing of the rooms, and the positive comments regarding the hostess.

I booked the room via email exchange with Isabel, the hostess, initiated by filling in an inquiry form on the B&B's website. Isabel was very prompt in replying to my inquiries. We also ended up using email as means to coordinate our arrival time at the B&B.

Upon arrival, Isabel gave us a little tour of the home and gave us a little orientation to the area. This was very helpful as this was our first visit to Quebec.

The location of B&B worked well for us. It's in a residential area near Avenue Cartier, which is close enough to Vieux Quebec (about 20-minute walk or 5-10-minute drive), but far enough from the main touristy area that it feels like a good place to retreat from the crowded, touristy areas. An entrance to the Plains of Abraham (site of an important battle in Canadian history that is now a large public park) is within a couple of minutes walk, so it's a wonderful place to go for a walk or have a picnic lunch when the weather is nice outside. Isabel also mentioned that there were many dining options in the neighborhood nearby on Avenue Cartier; we didn't have time to check those out however.

The B&B itself is basically one of the houses in an urban neighborhood setting. Aside from the dining room that is set up like a little cafe with separate tables for the guests, everything else in the house felt more like visiting someone's residence. Our room was small, but it's clean and comfortable. We shared a small bathroom with other guests, but during our brief stay, we didn't even notice the other guests sharing the same bathroom with us. So, nothing fancy, but very comfortable -- pretty much what we're looking for.

Isabel was a wonderful host, and she made very delicious breakfast as well. For our only breakfast during this stay, we had an open-faced ham and cheese sandwich and date crumbles that were quite tasty. During the breakfast, we chatted with an American couple who was a repeat guest and was staying for several days. They said that they always looked forward to the breakfasts during their stay, and to Isabel they commented that she should write a cookbook based on her breakfast menu.

The only slightly negative experience we had during our stay was the slight difficulty we had in finding parking on the street when we arrived -- somewhat expected experience when visiting a home located in urban setting. Aux Trois Balcons had a little parking area behind the building that can tightly fit three cars, but if that's filled, you would have to find a spot on the street.

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at Aux Trois Balcons, and it's definitely highly recommended for anyone coming to Quebec City and is looking for a no-frills, comfortable stay at very reasonable price. The only regret we had was that our length of stay was too short.
