“Well worth the money. Wish we could have stayed longer!”
Found this charming and wonderful little gem quite by accident. Even though we arrived late, with no reservation, and hadn't decided yet whether to spend one night or two, the night clerk was friendly and helpful, giving us one of the best few rooms he had left at a slightly reduced price because he couldn't guarantee it would be free for two nights if we did decide to stay. We happily agreed to move to a new room if we stayed a second night.
The 'continental' breakfast, included with the room fee, was just wonderful. We expected muffins and watery coffee. What we got was as much food as you could want. Hot and cold cereal, toast, bagels, croissants, yogurt, fresh fruit, waffles, and more.
The owners, who dealt with us next morning, were equally friendly, helpful and so accommodating we couldn't believe it. When we decided to stay a second night (partly because we loved the hotel!), they went out of their way to ensure that we didn't have to change rooms after all, even though we had been informed ahead of time, and had agreed to move for a second night.
The hotel itself is beautifully decorated and maintained without losing the charm of a period building. The rooms are comfortable and tasteful without going overboard. Some might find them a bit small, but those folks are better off at a Holiday Inn. Rooms were small in the 1840s. It wasn't hard to close our eyes and imagine being back in that time, albeit on a much more comfortable bed. :)
You can't beat the central location. We were steps away from the most vibrant section of Vieux Québec and didn't need our car once while we stayed. The parking is a bit of an adventure to get to the first time, but again the staff came through with a detailed map and instructions on how to get there and back. It turned out to be easier than it looked at first glance and we appreciated not having to worry about parking during our stay.
All in all, a wonderful experience and definitely our first choice for hotel next time we are in Quebec City.
