Some cities in Canada (probably most of them) are really expensive, and Montreal is definitely one of them.
This hotel came in handy when traveling with my family. The room had a small kitchen which helped us have quick meals, cheaper than eating out everyday. Free laundry was really helpful at the middle of my trip, just need to buy the soap, which they have in their little convenience "room", a little store with some food, drinks, medicine, soap and if I remember well, a microwave.
There is an "office" room with computers and Internet, was useful since I had an MBA paper to send out and all I had was an iPad. They do have internet connection in the rooms.
The floors need refurbishing. Rooms are sort of old but ok, could be cleaner.
Reception is renewed and staff... the staff was simply awesome with us all the time. Any question, they would stop what they were doing and help us - call a cab, point out places in the map, recommending restaurants, etc.
By the way, the hotel is really close to a little market and a bar (in another hotel), and about 3 blocks from some very good restaurants. Not far from Chinatown and you can walk (if day is nice and you don't mind walking a little) to the Old Downtown. They do have a garage if you need (charged extra).
If I went to Montreal again I would compare prices to be sure, but would probably stay at Candlewood again. I definitely recommend the hotel.
