“Great Hostel, Fantastic Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

I was in Montreal attending a conference in October. I found this hostel in a great area, with a room with en-suite bathroom for only $90/night. The room had a double bed, with a sink in the room, and an amazing (but very small) bathroom that is one of the best small-space bathrooms I've ever seen. The owner Carl is an amazing handy person who has done a majority of the work himself. If you appreciate the green movement of "small footprint" with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, you will truly love this place.

“Clean, staff polite, but cleaning every night at 11 pm to 2 am makes it hard to sleep”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2011

We stayed here for four nights. It was clean and homey and the staff was polite. Breakfast was provided at 8-10 am. It is tea, coffee and toast with various spreads. We stayed in one of the private basement rooms with a shared bathroom. However, there was loud cleaning noises from the upstairs kitchen/communal area every night starting at 11 pm, usually for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours and sometimes going until 2 am. It consisted of vacuuming, and loud banging and scrapping of chairs. The building is very old so sound carries very well through the floors. I had a hard time sleeping through this. I don't know why they do this so late, why they don't do this before 11 pm (which is when they ask every one ELSE to be quiet), is beyond me. Maybe this isn't a problem if your staying in one of the upstairs rooms....

Windows also didn't close completely, and noise carried quite loudly from outside, but was still not as disruptive as the nightly cleaning and usually started/ended at a reasonable hour (except on weekends of course). They did have security bars covering the windows so no-one breaks in. I imagine it's cold in this room when it's cold outside though...

“Good Location but Poor Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2009

The accomodations were basic (no A/C for instance) but the door had a lock so that was OK. The location on the edge of the Latin Quarter meant that there were a tremendous number of retaurants, shops, and nightlife venues within walking distance. The limited selection of bread, spreads, tea and coffee did not merit being called breakfast . For that, you need to go elsewhere. You have to pay for a bath towel but the staff doesn't tell you that. More importantly, when asked where I could park, they told me on Sherbrooke St. in front of the building but failed to warn me that vehicles had to be removed before a certain time (6:30am?) to avoid a ticket The additional cost and inconvenience this caused means that it would have been cheaper to stay in a regular hotel, which is exactly what I will do the next time.

“Good Standard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2008

My wife and I stayed during the Just for Laughs festival. It was a great location for the festival. We decided to stay an extra few days so had a couple of nights in the main building, which is nice with a lot of character but our room did not have air conditioning. We then moved to newer rooms at the back which were also of a good standard although small There are some restrictive rules about when you can cook and do washing but if you are there to see the city you wont be spending much time inside. Staff were very friendly and eager to help us plan further stages of our trip.

“Basic but Clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2007

My wife and I both stayed at this hostel and were somewhat disappointed with the overall experience, and was very expensive by hostel standards for very little and basic amenities.

Upon receiving our first room we quickly learned the window lock was broken thus rendering room insecure and easily accessible due to fire escape stairs outside. We advised the owner who told us not to worry as nothing like that ever happens. However I doubt he would pay for a new computer or replacement of our belongings if they were stolen.

We moved to another room and had to pay more, however it was secure and had a wash basin. The kitchen facilities were very basic and reasonably clean and common area was rather small which had the dining area off to the side. Not much room overall.

The hostels location is fairly central, approx 10-15 min walk to the old city, 10 min to any reasonable type of supermarket and 5 minutes from restaurants. The metro is only a couple of blocks away and there is a bus stop outside the hostel.

Cleanliness of the hostel room was good. We had clean sheets, wash basin was clean and the overall room was tidy. The shared facilities are somewhat a little worse for ware, the showers on level 2 don’t have exhaust fans and extremely tiny and the toilets do not flush very well….needing 2 or 3 flushes to get waste out.

Breakfast was included when we stayed, however is very basic, consisting of only breads and spreads, bagels, cut oranges, coffee and tea and no fresh milk. Plates were locked away requiring you to use a plastic serving tray lined with paper napkins to eat your food from.
