“This place deserves a higher rating...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

I was there for a couple of nights and was happy to find that my room was actually a suite at room rates. There was a large walk in closet in the bedroom that also contained a security box for valuables. A big enough living room made the place very comfortable & user friendly. This is the best place I have stayed at in Montreal & I have stayed in many places in Montreal. For the price which was just high of 100 dollars you cannot do better in Montreal, in my opinion. Very easy access to some good restaurants & good shopping & many good coffee shops. The area is primarily french but the front desk had no trouble with english which might be a concern for out of towners, No complaints whatsoever and that doesn't happen very often.

Room Tip: Maybe ask for a bigger room...?

“Good for visits to Universite de Montreal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2011

The rooms are large and spacious, the kitchenettes are functional, and the location is convenient. However, the noise can be quite bad, the furniture is not inviting, and the carpets feel a bit dirty. Overall, acceptable, but nothing special.

Room Tip: The sixth floor was extremely noisy (AC on roof?), so we had to ask for another room.

Dear AcademicTravels,
Thank you for having brought to our attention the noise problem.
The noise problem was due to building demolition located just one block away from our location.
Your comments regarding furniture will be reported to Management.

“Large suites but a little tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2011

I was here on business at UdeM - so the location was perfect. The suite has a kitchenette and so perfect for preparing food and storing drinks. Air conditioning unit was in living room but bedroom was cool enough as long as you remembered to turn the air con on early enough. Reception staff were friendly some days and less friendly others (it can be like that everywhere). No problem with street noise despite overlooking Cotes-des-neiges. Only minor complaint is that the bathroom in our suite needs some updating - it was definitely worse for wear and needs an extraction fan installed. Overall, a good hotel, good value for money, the suite aspect of the rooms is excellent and I would use them again.

“Just okay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

The rooms are like mini apartments which is nice. There is a grocery store across the street so it was convenient to buy and cook my own meals. Internet connection was fine. Staff was alright. The building is old and could use updating. The room had a fairly new kitchen and shower ( no tub) which looked nice as long as you didn't look too closely. While I was there they were doing renovations on the floor above me and it sounded like the ceiling was about to come down on me. I was hoping to work from there one day and there was no way. I was no warned of this ahead of time.

There is a Leonidas chocolate shop attached... If you've never had any, you *have* to have some... They are delicious!

“a decent hotel, good as short term housing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

I recently stayed in this hotel for two weeks while attending a conference at the University of Montreal. I can't comment on the price as the stay was paid for by the University but I'll try to comment on everything else.

This was a decent hotel. Not the best by far but not bad either. On the plus side the suite I had was very large. A decent size bedroom and a huge living room with a balcony, a desk, a sofa, a TV and a dining table. There was also a small kitchen with a fridge and a small supply of kitchen and cooking utensils. Given that I stayed in Montreal for full two weeks this came in very handy as I didn't want to eat out all the time.
I also liked the location - near the University, a block away from a supermarket, near subway and public transport and with lots of small bistros and cafes around.
My room faced away from the street so there were no issues with noise that some other reviewers mentioned.

On the minus side, the place could definitely use some renovation as the rooms and the furniture are a bit run down. Also there is no central AC. There is a window AC unit in the living room but I had to run it full blast (which did get a bit loud) to cool everything including the bedroom. Also, there is no wired internet connection. There is free wireless but the connection is very spotty.

One last tip. The hotel is some distance from downtown. To get to downtown you could take a subway (a couple of blocks away), a taxi or a bus. Subway actually takes a long time as one has to transfer twice. The best (cheap) option is to walk north along Cote-des-Neiges to the intersection with Chemin de la Côte-Sainte-Catherine and take bus 129 which goes all the way to the old city.
