“Great for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2010

Came to Montreal to attend the Osheaga music festival with my girlfriend. We selected this hotel based on the price and the reviews here on trip advisor. All we were looking for was a clean place to sleep and recharge after our days/nights out and it delivered on that. The rooms were nothing special, tv was small and the bathroom was tiny, but for such a cheap price and location it wasn't an issue. The room was clean and with the exception of one morning when children could be heard running down the halls, it was quiet.

Our only complaints were waiting at the front door for someone to let us in, and we think someone might have gone through our luggage when we left it at the front desk after checking out when we had a flight later in the evening. Luckily we didn't leave anything of value in there so nothing was taken.

Overall the place was just fine for what we needed and the price and location were great for us.

“Hole in the Wall!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2010

Our family is composed of 2 adults, 2 kids (ages 3 and 1). The rooms with the double beds are just so tiny and dingy you could not fit a pack and play properly on the corner. The bathroom was so ridiculously small (shower, no tub) it seemed dangerous to go in there. The neighborhood was really sketchy compared to the rest of downtown Montreal. It was going for $90/night- and would've been better priced at $50/night. Needless to say, the conditions were so poor that we decided to swallow the cancellation fee and leave the hotel an hour we arrived there.
The host, Anwar, had preferred that i pay in cash, and when I had US dollars, he said the exchange rate was equal, so he wanted to take the US dollars instead of charging my credit card. I thought that was so bizarre- because the exchange is fairly equal, but NOT equal (maybe $15 difference)- so he was making so more money with the US dollar. And when he charged the cancellation fee, he tacked on an extra $20. We were too distressed and frustrated to battle it out- but he did not seem trustworthy and reliable- we just wanted out of that hole in the wall!
The accommodations may have been OK for visitors with no kids (like no one 18 and under should ever stay in that neighborhood!!) and if the rate were about $50/night or less. It is more a hostel than a bed and breakfast. I cannot comment on breakfast, because we were not there to experience that. Overall, when we moved to another hotel closer to McGill University- the service was so much better- and you felt like you could walk outside and not get mugged. I would recommend Novotel, Omni, Marriot, and Days Inn. Those hotels I have stayed in in different occassions, and have all been good.

“Excellent value for money + in great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2009

That was a good choice. Thank to the previous reviews by other travelers I booked a hotel room at Castel St.Denis. And it was absolutely the best choice I could have done :)))

The place is really perfectly located for on-foot exploration of Old Port and Old Town (+Metro station in the area and safe underground parking place at the Library). We had a quiet room at the rear, so it means: normal, undisturbed sleep after a long day of walking.

I need to honestly say that breakfast is... well... non-existent (almost) and you need to have it in your room. But to be honest the room price just wiped out the bad taste of the breakfast. We paid about 186 CADollars (with tax) for both of us for 2 days and we wanted separate beds so we got two double beds!!! for the same price. That was absolutely worth it. My friend was really satisfied with the choice I made booking this hotel.

Not to mention the service. Very, very nice people.

“excellent customer service, great place for the budget savvy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2009

i booked castel saint denis because of its good reviews and its location: it was at the heart of montreal's just for laughs festival, it was close to the metro, and it was on rue saint-denis (a street known for its strip of good restos, bars & pubs).

the place served its purpose for the budget savvy- a clean and decent place to spend the night. the cherry on top was their very personalized and warm customer service.

this was very reason why we came back a few days later.

i must mention though that they don't have parking. but they did recommend a reasonable parking lot a block away.

“Friendly Staff, Excellent Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2009

I found the hotel on Tripadvisor and booked after reading the reviews and checking the price. The Staff is very friendly. The front desk area is clean as are the rooms. The shower was terribly small and apparently all the rooms have similar sized showers. While breakfast is said to be included, it really is just OJ/Tea/Coffee and a croissant. No amenities in the room. Free Wi-Fi was good. Excellent location on st. denis . While the Sherbrooke Metro was closer, I walked to Berri Uqam ( the central Metro station) several times. Takes about 10 minutes along the street with restaurants on both sides. I stayed 2 nights and then went back for another 2 nights a few days later , mostly because of the welcoming staff.
