“Great Location and Friendly Hosts”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

Had a friends long weekend getaway to Montreal, and they have stayed at this B&B many times before. Booked Suite 4, which was quite a large suite for the weekend.

The hosts were all extremely friendly and fun to interact with, yet they also gave us a nice degree of privacy. The street level bar was a great stop on the way out for the evening to St. Catherine, and never noticed any noise from it in the room.

On the upside, the room was spacious and the breakfast each morning was very filling. On the downside, as others have noted, the open concept bathroom in the suite was just a little too open. There is zero privacy in the bathroom, which was unlike anywhere we've ever been. No shampoo, though soap was provided. Also, being a somewhat early riser, it was hard to wait until 9AM for breakfast. Fortunately was able to slip downstairs earlier and get some much needed coffee.

The location is fantastic and very walkable to so many things. I liked the fact that it's not in the middle of all the action, on a side street, yet a very short walk away from restaurants, shopping and bars.

Room Tip: Rooms 4-6 are upstairs and have more privacy

“Big disappointment- only stay here if you want to party.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2011

While this place's location was prime, there were several problems. The room, while tastefully decorated, was miniscule. It's the room that they use on their website on the main page with a huge mirror at the head of the bed. Do NOT take that room! It's so tiny there is barely place to put your luggage even though it looks large. Moreover, just outside of that room is the common bathroom. We walked out on someone taking a dump twice, or someone walking around naked once too.

Next worse thing is that your bathroom is at the foot of the bed, and it has no door. Not even a curtain. You have FULL view of the toilet and shower. Even as a couple who have been together for a long time, it simply wasn't comfortable to...you know... use the facilities with your partner being able to see everything. Extremely inconsiderate design.

Then, there were the parties on the terrace, which is right outside the window to the room. Not EXTREMELY loud, but a bunch of beer-drinking individuals out there nonetheless- right next to your room. They might as well have come in and sat on our bed while we slept. And since the place is in the party part of the gay village, expect to be woken up at 5:00 AM by someone probably arriving back from a drunken evening. It happened to us on one morning, and we nearly canceled the rest of our stay. It's really a cute auberge- but not the kind of place you want to stay if you have business to do in Montreal. And I think the owners think the same thing: If you're gay, and don't care about being up early or getting any business done during the day, this place is for you. It's amazing. But I'll never go back there simply because it's not designed for people who want privacy or require sleep at night. Take from that what you may.

Room Tip: Don't take the room with the large mirror at the head of the bed.

“Only Gets Better!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

Can't understand why there aren't more tripadvisor reviews on this place. I live in Northern Vermont, and have stayed here more than 12 times over the years, and still LOVE it!! The host is quiet and gentle and not in your face and gives you all the privacy you need, but is always there if you need anything. The bedding is super luxe, decor high style, and the location is perfect. On a quiet street right off St. Cathernine Street and perfect for the gay tourist. But, I have been here with my sister twice now, and she feels just as welcomed as I do. Be aware that the bathrooms don't offer much privacy, but not a big issue since there is a separate bathroom down the hall as well. Wonderful little bar downstairs is always fun to visit, and you just can't beat this city in the summer. Very close to the subway system, tho there is so much do do within walking distance, I don't think I have ever used it. Give this place a try, much less pretentious and "out there" (clothing optional and sexual tension wise ) that you would feel comfortable taking your mom along!! Always a great stay!!! Jay ---

Room Tip: I like the suites

“Upscale and Friendly B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 April 2011

This property is now named "Aubergell" (aubergell.com) and is just one-and-a-half blocks north of awesome St Catherine St in the heart of "Le Village", Montreal's bustling gay district. The inn is a walk-up, and it occupies the two top floors of the building. On the ground floor is a cozy cocktail bar that looks like a very comfty lounge. It's a great spot to have a few drinks before you hit the legendary gay bars in the neighbourhood.

The hosts are incredibly friendly and the breakfasts were lovely and delicious. We didn't have to eat lunch either day, as the breakfasts were classic and hearty Quebecois fare.

For first-time visitors, the inn has a great collection of materials on the sites of the city and there are copies of the major gay puplications in the entrance lobby.

We were in Suite 6, which is on the top floor facing the rear of the building. This meant that it was very quiet, peaceful and restful. The room was spotless, very well decorated, and features a massive king-size bed. The only thing that might put guests off is that the bathroom is open concept, meaning there is no door. Even for a married couple together 10 years, this was a touch awkward for us when one of us needed some privacy.

The bathtub (with shower) is huge and is nestled in a little oasis with silk curtains and dramatic lighting. Very nice touch. I have not seen that before. The colour palette is very masculine and it is nicely laid out. Everything is of very high quality. The inn feels like one of those upscale boutique hotels.

Two suggestions for improvement: (1) the window mechanisms were broken on both windows, which was a shame. You had to manually push and pull the windows. This was the only blight on what is a very nice property; (2) while there was liquid soap there was no shampoo/conditioner. That was unexpected for a property of this quality.

Given the open bathroom design and location I have to recommend Aubergell primarily for GLBT couples and/or GLBT singles looking to, ahem, find a friend. I think gay clients would be the most comfortable here, since it is a small inn with just 5 rooms. That said, an open-minded straight couple would be very welcomed and would be treated very nicely.

“Wonderfully Clean, Great Location, Charming Host!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2007

I have stayed at this property several times over the past few years, and feel it needs a review posted on tripadvisor so others can know about it. I am surprised no one has written a review yet, as this place is spotlessly clean, affordable, and in a great location in the gay village. I have been here once with my sister, once with my partner, and several times with friends and have always had a perfect stay. The owner is incredibly accommodating to Americans, speaks fluent English, and we feel truly welcomed and appreciated each time we come back. The place is absolutely spotless, and just a short walk to St. Catherine street in the Gay Village on Amherst. There is a cosy bar on the first floor where you can meet some nice locals, and the included breakfast is very nice. Way upscale for the price charged. WONDERFUL value!!!
