The neighbourhood around the Guesthouse was very unsettling and the building did not even have an indentifying sign on it. Upon arriving at the time we had declared to the owner, no one answered the door and the phone did not have an answering machine or any indication the number was connected to a business. This is highly unprofessional for a business and I would strongly discourage anyone from staying here.

Toronto was the first stop for us in our trip around the world. We chose this guesthouse primarily because of the cost, which when compared to other hostels and hotels in the city seemed more than reasonable.
It doesn't look much from the outside and to be honest it's not that pretty on the inside, but when we got there the owner showed us a choice of rooms and they were all clean and tidy, with tv's and fridges, one we saw even had it's own small kitchen.
The bathroom was always fairly clean and so was the kitchen. There's 2 computers and laundry facilities also. If you want to buy food, then there is also a couple of corner shops just across the street.
It's about a 40 minute walk to the CN Tower and the harbour, although there is a subway station about 3 minutes away from the guesthouse if you prefer. We walked everywhere and felt we got to see alot more of the city and the various neighbourhoods.
If your after somewhere cheap to sleep and don't mind that it's a little out of town then this place is more than adequate.

Stayed here for 6 nights and had a good time - owner is a very friendly and helpful guy and makes you very very welcome and is full of information.

We got top room which is large with double bed, private kitchenette, TV, table and chairs with a shared bathroom which is right across the hall and shared with only one other room.

Location - two minutes walk from subway station so very handy for getting in and out of town but as others said the place is not signed as a guesthouse from outside and looks like a regular house. The laundry and full kitchen downstairs along with free internet access was useful.

BAD: The bed was not overly comfy and we spent last night in a different room (due to us changing our booking). The beds in that room creaked so much we could not sleep and had to put mattress on floor so would have hated to have had that room all week.

For the price of around £25 a night the place is a real bargain and a good alternative to a youth hostel.

The City Guesthouse presents an unusual combination of high-end and low-end features, making it hard to categorize.

The GOOD: When I stayed there I got a private room with television, desk, chairs, wardrobe, books & magazines, and a private kitchenette, all for C$40. The bathroom, though technically shared, was right outside my door and was practically a private bathroom. The building is clean and well-kept on the inside, and the owners are pleasant and accommodating. There are two free internet computers, and a laundry room in the basement. The location, while not perfect, is very close to the subway.

The BAD: The building looks terrible from the outside. It's old and worn and right next to an eyesore of a vacant lot. There's no sign announcing the guesthouse; I had to double check the address to confirm that I was in the right place. And later, when I returned to the guesthouse at midnight, after a night on the town, I found that my bathroom door wouldn't open, so I was forced to use one of the other shared bathrooms. My bed wasn't very comfortable, and the curtains weren't thick enough to block out security light from outside. The subway was slightly audible, at regular intervals, but only if I listened for it.

Let me stress that, as ugly as it is on the outside, this place is clean and well kept on the inside. One of the other reviews mentioned problems with insects, but I saw nothing of the kind. Apart from the mishap with the bathroom door, my stay was pleasant and cheap.

When I was there, there was a "FOR SALE" sign in the front yard. Perhaps this means that there will be new owners soon. I hope not -- the ones I met were very kind.
