My partner and I stayed at the Dundonald House for four nights and five days at the beginning of July 2009. We were fooled by the reviews on Trip Advisor and the stunning website!
First, the payment method of traveler's checks or cash is odd...What B &B doesn't take credit cards? This should have been the first sign for us to find another place to stay.
Dave and Warren are the most inquisitve B & B owners that I have ever met. After flying in from South Florida, we were immediately grilled on everything...We want to relax and enjoy our vacation and not give a doctoral dissertation on our reasons for visiting Canada.
Next, there are no locks on the doors. Yes, I know that crime is much less in Toronto and Canada than the States, but there are guests at the B & B. The owners said too many guests lost their keys at the bath houses so they did away with them. Try advertising that little detail on the website! Also, as soon as we left for the day, our door would be propped open which is extremely strange! We felt like we had no privacy at all!
There is a safe in the room, but we were told by Dave and Warren that most people don't use it. The safe was barely functional and we had to ask the owners how to open it.
Also, there aren't mini refrigerators, ice buckets, or even any cups in the rooms. You have to keep your beverages in the basement and retrieve them when needed.
Don't expect to find little soaps and shampoo in the bathrooms. There was an old bar of opened soap and some used shower gel in the bathroom. Enjoy!
Dave and Warren did make breakfast each morning, but you have to sit at their dining room table and make conversation with other guests. This is fine if you want to be a social butterfly early in the morning. Otherwise, there needs to be individual tables for guests to eat in privacy. You also don't get a choice of what you like to eat for breakfast and a small B & B like this should ask guests about meal choices.
Finally, there is no jacuzzi! Yes, a beautiful jacuzzi is on the website and there is even a sign on their fridge about the closing times for the jacuzzi and sauna. Dave and Warren admitted that they need to update their own website. I asked Dave at the end of my stay if we could have a little $$ taken off the room because the jacuzzi was no longet there and it was on the website. He screamed at me, "Absolutely Not!"
The final straw was asking Dave to call us a cab to take us to the airport for our early flight home. We took a shuttle from a nearby major hotel chain. Dave called us an expensive limo without telling us the price ($60.00 for literally a two minute cab ride).
Ultimately, Dave and Warren want to pocket a little extra money by renting out 3-4 extra rooms in their home. They don't want to run the B & B like professional guest houses that you find all over the U.S. and Canada. If you want to stay with annoying, intrusive relatives, then find some of your own and don't stay at the Dundonald House!
We loved Toronto, but NOT the Dundonald House!
