“Central location, good value.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2007

I stayed at the Cromwell for 13 nights in September while attending the Toronto International Film Festival. This was an ideal location for me, being near Yonge/Bloor and is very close to the subway.

We arrived in the evening but the caretaker was expecting our arrival and had our keys waiting. The property is comprised of self-contained suites so there is little need for contact with the management, but the proprietors were very helpful when I had any queries.

I had a studio apartment which was large in size and had its own en suite (shower and bath) and kitchen, plus sofa and writing desk. There is ample wardrobe space. Very comfortable, although the shower lacks power.

Normal check out time is 10am but I was allowed to keep my room until 6pm without any extra charge which was very kind.

My only mishap was getting stuck in their lift for 35 mins, but an engineer was called out quickly.

I would certainly recommend the Cromwell to other travellers and will certainly stay there again in the future - represents good value for such a central location.

“Good Budget Choice in Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2006

We stayed here for a week in October 2006. The location is great in terms of public transport, about 3 blocks from the Bloor-Yonge subway which will take you North, South, East and West in the city as this is the junction of two lines. If you’re travelling in from the airport (without huge bags) it’s very easy to take the 192 Airport Rocket to Kipling subway station and then it’s a direct line to Bloor-Yonge. All for only $2.75 per adult and 70 cents for children 12 yrs and under.

We walked from the apartment as far as the CN Tower, to Kensington Market, the Eaton Centre and so on. Well, pretty much everywhere apart from the day there was a very cold, strong wind blowing!

The upmarket shopping available at Yorkville and Hazelton Lanes (which includes the wonderful Whole food Market) are all within about 10/15 mins walk at most of the apartment.

We rented a two bedroom apartment which consisted of one bedroom with 2 single beds and a dbl bed in the other bedroom. There was a good size L-shaped living room with a three-seater sofa (converted to a sofa-bed if needed) a two-seater sofa and an armchair, coffee table and side tables and lamps, TV with cable (they say basic but it seemed like plenty of channels to us) and a dining table for six. While the décor is somewhat dated and in the pink/brown/beige spectrum it was clean. There was a balcony off the sitting/dining room (distant view of the lake and nice sun rises). The sitting room and both bedrooms had ceiling fans and air con units. We didn’t need this is late Oct but the apartment was also warm enough, worth noting as this is a cold city in winter. Various cupboards and wardrobes for storage, so no problems tripping over bags.

The small kitchen was basic with original old style units but, again, clean. There was a full stove, microwave, full size fridge/freezer, electric kettle, coffee maker and toaster. The Cromwell provided washing-up liquid and dishcloths/tea towels. A reasonable amount of pots, pans, plates etc. When I asked for extra towels, tea cloths and a hair dryer these where all provided quite happily.

There are numerous 24 hour supermarkets within a few minutes. Rabba was about the best (turn left out of the building, on the corner near Yonge). Above Rabba there’s a 24 hour internet café which was very handy for sending emails home and quite cheap. They do have WiFi at the Cromwell if you’re travelling with a laptop. Otherwise turn right out of the building and turn left onto Church. There’s a Hasty Market, also a Beer Store about one block down on Church and there’s a very nice wine store on Wellesley nr the corner with Church.

Also on Church, nr the junction with Wellesley, there are various take out pizza and kebab/falafel (shawarma) places and yet another supermarket, fruit and veg shop and a Starbucks (!) about 3 or 4 blocks along Church. All very close. Some nice restaurants in walking distance too.

All the staff we came into contact with at The Cromwell where friendly and helpful. We arrived after office hours (Mon-Fri 9am – 5pm approx) and the Superintendent who lives in the building met us with our keys and door entry card. No problems getting in or getting our keys, all the info was as supplied. Not like the time we ended up sitting on a door-step in Barcelona! These things matter when renting apartments!!

There’s a laundry in the basement that costs $2 per wash and $1.50 for the dryer (you need to get your own detergent etc) again useful for those on a longer trip or with children.

If you want 5 star luxury you can pay for that. If you want good basic, spacious accommodation that gives you a great location and facilities such as a kitchen, so you can relax after a long day out, this is the place. We paid $1,144 CAN /£563 (approx) inc tax for a week which, compared to a hotel (effectively a week in a bedroom and a bathroom as a family!) seemed like a very good deal to me.

I was travelling with my two children and felt quite safe as a woman on my own, with children, walking around both the immediate area and Toronto in general.

“Excellent Location, Inexpensive”

We found this place on line and ended up being very happy we found it. They have a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, dishes and silverware. The location is right off Yonge & Bloor, so a very good spot, close to subway too. It is a secure building, you must have a security card to get inside. This is not like a regular hotel, they do not clean your room every day, I think only once per week so you may want to bring and extra towel and/or face cloth. The one we had was a small studio apartment, they also have larger units if you need something bigger. The only thing we would have been concerned about was there is no central air. They do have air conditioning units but I would be a little concerned to see if they would actually cool the rooms off if it was real hot in the summer. It was only in the 60's when we went so didn't have to use the a/c much. Everything was as they said it would be when we made the reservation and the room was clean when we got there. I would definately recommend this place for a long or short stay and will stay there again if I go back to Toronto. Great choice if you want to save on money and make some in room meals. There is also a small grocery store only a block away.

“Good choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2005

PROS: price; convenient location, easy (3-4 block) walk to most tourist points of interest; beautiful view of downtown Toronto from the rooms; pleasant and efficient staff, always willing to help and give suggestions; pots, pans, plates and other kitchenware provided, you can save $$ by preparing a quick meal once a day; coin laundry in the basement; and, of course, parking is a big moneysaver.
CONS: furniture and carpets are old and a bit shabby, primary color brown; towels get changed only once a week so bring a few of your own; rooms get cleaned once a week so you may want to buy your own basic cleaning supplies.
OTHER THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND: property located in the middle of the Gay Village; the area has a somewhat artistic flavor, reasonably-priced restaurants and diners, and quite a few rainbow flags hanging from house windows.
