“Living on past reviews?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2008

Having seen good reviews we booked this through B&B Canada. Location is good, house is OK, one room was nice but the other couple had a 'private bathroom' on the top floor which was directly opposite the open dining room door - a quick dash required to preserve modesty!

Our unavoidable late arrival seemed to annoy the owner who 'shushed' us all the way upstairs without so much as a 'welcome'. The little lounge is handy, but plainly furnished, for making tea, with a fridge and kettle. We were very clearly made to feel less important than 'the other guests' that night! There was only one occupied room and it was only 11pm - we had been up since dawn and are well behaved.

Next day we awaited the advertised 'sumptuous'breakfast - plain store bought dry bread, store bought jam, NO maple syrup - dry omelette - nothing special at all and way below what we would give to our occasional student visitors to UK. Later experiences during our holiday only showed us how very dull and basic these breakfasts were.
Its a pity, because Carol gave us great advice about our visit and the house is very well placed for visitors - a bit more thought and investment plus a lot less hype and / or a price reduction would make this B&B acceptable. It felt like a cheap place.

“Cash Only!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2007

The Mulberry Tree takes only cash or travelers checks for payment. This was not explained before we arrived -- they took our credit card number for the reservation and the word "cash" never even appeared in our confirmation e-mail, so we naturally assumed that like any other B&B they would take credit cards. We stayed four nights and were not prepared to come with that much cash. Even their own web site does not mention this policy (although if you search diligently you will find this mentioned on one other site).

Other than that I might have given them a three or four, but this one glitch is severe enough that I have to knock them down to a two.

“Strong Building, Shaky Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2006

The Mulberry Tree is a gorgeous B&B with a gracious and eclectic interior. Art, photography, and world treasures adorn the front desk, kitchen, and winding staircase.

Although our room was on the small side, the B&B offered an upstairs common sitting area with coffee/tea service and mini-fridge.

The building is found in a great part of town. I reached Cabbagetown, Yonge St., Church/Wellesley, Bloor St., and the subway all by foot. The area seemed fine for solo travelers to walk around in the evening (using big city travel sense, of course.)

A couple of must-know bits of information. First, the innkeepers accept only cash (in Canadian funds). Second, Internet access is limited to one troublesome dial-up connection in the hallway next to the upstairs sitting area. Luckily, there are relatively inexpensive Internet cafes within a few blocks with easier access to the Information Superhighway.

I found the head innkeeper to be rather unfriendly. When I called ahead to say that we'd be late arriving the first night due to misjudgment of the map, she scolded us by saying, "You shouldn't have used Internet directions." Sadly, the B&B Website had no directions beyond Canada, so Internet directions seemed to be the most appropriate choice coming from the USA. Another instance of the offputting service occurred when our room had not been cleaned for two days. When I asked the Carol (the innkeeper) about housekeeping, she said, "well, you were in your rooms both days." This was clearly not the case, as we were actively sightseeing the days in mention (with receipts to prove our time away from the room). No apology was made for the inattention to the room, although the housekeeper came by to clean within 30 mins of my query.

We've always had great relations with innkeepers throughout our many years of traveling, so I'm rather saddened to have this sour taste. Looking past this, the Mulberry Tree is a distinctive, yet affordable lodging choice in the heart of Toronto.

Carol made us feel very welcome in this lovely home, not far from downtown. It was lovely to share a great breakfast with the other guests and chat through experiences! The room was very comfortable and there's a great little lounge on the top floor where you can relax and enjoy a glass of wine.

We would recommend this B&B as an enchanting place to stay in Toronto.

“a wonderful BnB”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2005

A wonderful BnB, with beautiful rooms, very relaxing to stay there. The owners Carol and Paul are very welcoming and make you feel at home. the breakfasts are eaten around a large table in a lovely room so you can meet and chat with other guests. Our room on the first room had no bathroom but it was just across the hall. The Mulberry Tree is situated on the edge of the Downtown area so it is possible to work off your breakfast by walking into the centre. Alternatively Sherbourne subway stop is just a few minutes walk away. Highly recommemded.
