“My advice, don't stay there...”

Travelling from Australia my experience was this. The staff there are smug and apathetic, no smile, no please, no thank you, here's your key and here's the rules. The rooms prison cell small, level of cleanliness disgusting, Student dorm style, the furniture was old damaged and used, mattress delapated and extremely uncomfortable (I actually slept on the floor it was more comfortable) the price like most accomodations in Toronto were insanely unproportionate compared to what you get there's NO SUCH THING as a reasonable price there it's either too expensive for something decent or too expensive for something practically uninhabitable (and they wonder why tourism is down there dramatically it has nothing to do with SARS and much more to do with their bad attitude and exploitive prices) I'll skip Toronto next time around and go directly to Montreal, at least they know what hospitality is there and at a fair price, without the New York of the North wannabe impersonal and bad attitude.

“Good location, Good Price, Bad Hygiene”

Basically, the title says it all. The Residence is in an ideal spot with a decent price for a single room, and is in walking/driving/public transportation distance from all the good stuff. But unfortunately, the rooms left alot to be desired.

I walked into my room and almost passed out from shock when I saw that the sheets were covered in what looked like human body hair. When I went to request that my hairy sheets and covers be changed, the people at the front desk were very nice, but only gave me new sheets to cover the old ones. They did not have the old, hairy ones removed.

Needless to say, I spent only one cold night there, as I slept on top of the covers fully dressed and coated, not daring to let any body part touch the linen. The shared bathrooms and kitchens were also dank and poorly lit, and just not hygenic enough for me.

The next day I checked out.

Not that the Residence is all bad - the staff is polite, and the downstairs gym with classes is a nice touch. If you don't mind a flophouse with perks, then you'll be fine at The Residence.

“Think twice before you make the booking”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2006

The rooms are very very old and rusty. You have to use shared bathroom and toilet. There is no cafe downstairs. The receptionists are not well trained and may show signs of ignorance. For instance, they will kick the mail of the tenant back without double check or notice etc. The fire alarm may go off for unknown reasons from time to time. The site of hotel is good among all the problems mentioned otherwise.

“Okay for one or two nights”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2006

I stayed on the 10th floor for two nights. The bed was comfortable, and the room relatively clean, although the carpet was really dirty.

The room was adequately heated, and it was nice to have a sink in the room, but the mirror was so old, I couldn't see myself in it, and there was no place to blowdry my hair. I had to go down to the gym and use their showers in the bowels of the building.

There are no kitchen facilities at this hotel.

The hotel is in a good location though, close to everything downtown.

They do have a key deposit at the hotel. Make sure you remember to get your $25 back.

“Beware of deposit!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2006

I booked with them last year and they took a $600 deposit (1 month stay) from me without sending me any receipt. When I went to cancel my booking (they did not tell me you could not cancel), they only returned half of my deposit. Only then did they send me a "contract" and even then, I cancelled much in advance of the date where I would not have gotten my deposit back. NB: ask for a receipt by email or etc. Do not trust them!
