“Updates missed the mark”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

The Strathcona Hotel has been getting a makeover, but it misses the mark with some decisions. In my "deluxe" double room, the one closet had about 6 inches of space in which to hang items, which I had to squeeze past the ironing board and television both of which now live there. There is nowhere to hang a hand-towel, and the shutters (not curtains) were in two sections - the highest of which were too high for me to close without standing on the bed. There are signs for conservation all over the room, but the linens were washed anyway and there is no recycling bin for paper or cans etc. Plus, there is still a cost for wireless internet access (in a "business" hotel?!?) and only one elevator was working - so slowly I had to take the stairs each morning, which emptied into a back alley. I don't think I'll stay there again, even though the location is ideal.

Dear Guest,

We are gald that you found the location of the hotel ideal for your business needs and we greatly appreciate for your time to give us your valuable feedback. The guest room that you stayed in has not yet been renovated (Remaining floors 3-7 are expected to be completed by June,2012). In the redesigned rooms the TV's have been taken out from the closet space and replaced with flat screen TV's on the wall thus substantially opening up the closet space. The new furniture package is custom made which has helped to create more circulation within the room.
Your suggestion of the shutters is excellent and we will evolve a process so guests do not have to be inconvenienced.
Both the guest elevators are being modernised with the first one expected to be completed by the end of Feb,2012. In the interim we sincerely regret the longer than normal wait time for the one functioning elevator.Once the modernisation is completed our guests will enjoy an effecient, smooth and flawless ride.
All the rooms have a blue recycle bin placed under the writing desk.We will recheck to ensure no room has been missed out.
Once again thank you for your time and we do hope you will try our newly renovated rooms.

“Great location at a great price.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

My husband and I were going to the Maple Leafs game and decided to make it a night out away from the kids. We booked the Strathcona Hotel online even though we never heard of this hotel before. The rate fit in our budget much more than the Royal York Hotel. We couldn't have asked for a better location. It's about a 5-minute walk from Union Station and the Air Canada Centre. We had a few drinks in the bar in the basement of the hotel before the game and had a bite to eat. The pub was very busy but the service was okay. The rooms in the hotel are small but very well-appointed and clean. I liked the hardwood floors in the rooms, it made it seem a lot cleaner. Ask for the upgraded room. We had a king-sized bed and it was very comfortable. Makes us want to buy one for home. In the morning, we grabbed our TImmies from right across the street, walked over to Union Station and headed home. Couldn't have asked for a better night. The Leafs won, we had a great night out and a great sleep. My only complaint was there was only one elevator working. We had to wait a bit for the elevator in the morning but the person at the front desk apologized and said they were changing the elevators and it would be done in a few weeks. The people at the front desk were very polite. We would definitely returne to this hotel.

“Excellent Stay, Excellent Staff & Perfect Location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I was in Toronto last weekend for a trade show and I cannot say enough about how amazing this hotel was. It was my first stay here. From my check in with Brendan which was seamless in execution, to my delicious 5 star lunch at York Street Cafe in between my sessions - was a welcome treat. The Executive Chef Tony happened to walk by my table during a very busy lunch and ask how everything with my meal was which was an incredibly touching and memorable treat. The fact that the Chef would take the time to ask, WOW. After a long day of sessions I preferred to stay close to the hotel on the second night and the Pub located in the hotel was gorgeous - fireplaces, comfortable and stylish couches make it cozy enough for me to put up my feet, read my book and have a glass of wine. The Strathcona is the perfect location whether you need to be near the theatre district, restaurant district or financial district - located in the downtown core you are at the heart of everything. My room was comfortable and stylish and the bed super comfy and more importantly, spotless!
I had a wonderful time at this hotel and would recommend it to anyone who isnt sure where they should stay in Toronto. Did I mention the incredible rate? Definitely the best value for my money...STAY HERE IF YOU WANT A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE IN TORONTO!!!

“This hotel's for chicks.....cheap cheap cheap!”

My husband and me came for the Monster truck show at Rogers Center on Jan. It was super fun.

What the hotel lacks in amenities and services they make up for it by being centralized. Near to the night-club scene, sports arenas; Rogers Center/Air Canada Center. Restaurants, theater, shopping, and best of all, being cheap cheap cheap. Did I mention cheap?

The weekend was fun and exciting.
Thanks Gravedigger for tarin' the place up!

Dear Guest,

Sorry to learn about your unfortunate experience. The elevators are currently under modernisation and with one elevator under operation the wait time can sometimes be longer than normal. Definately a big irritant. However this situation wll be over by the end of February when the other elevator is commissioned. The new elevator will be faster, smoother and effecient. I have researched why you were checked into a dirty room and have to admit that this was an error on our part and should not have happened at all and once brought to our attention should have been handled empathatically and professionally. We will take necessary action to improve training of our associates to be able to render the service that you should receive. Thanks again for your valauble feedback and we do hope you will give us another chance.

“CRUMMY!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Booked for two nights, only stayed for one. It began with being checked into a dirty room. Then I had to take stairs back down!! The elevator was taking an eternity. After a long trip, all I wanted to do was go to bed. I went to the desk, told them about the condition of the room, and would you believe I got a smirk and bogus apology. This is not the way to behave toward a new and potential frequent guest of the hotel. I have done my fair share of traveling, and through all my travels I have never experienced such pathetic, crummy customer service.
All night, the noise from the hallway was unbearable. I stepped out of my room to see what all the fuss was about. There was were these ominous figures lurking the hallway. Another time, apparent prostitutes. The uncomfortable atmosphere and customer service put a sour taste in my mouth. I will not book with this so-called hotel again. Found a better accommodation down the road.
