“Comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We just got home from a 3 night stay at this hotel. We paid for the executive suite and stayed in the business suite which, we were told, was the same room. The room was very spacious, with a separate bedroom and bathroom from the sitting room, which also had its own small bathroom. Everything was clean, the linens were crisp, the housekeeping staff were prompt, efficient and accommodating. There were ample fluffy towels in the bathrooms, extra pillows, a docking station and a Keurig coffee machine. Everything about the room was fine.

The breakfast buffet was very nice and had just about everything you could want. The staff serving the breakfast buffet were wonderful. They were polite, smiling always pouring your tea, asking if we needed anything etc. They were the best part of our experience at the hotel.

If we were to return to Toronto, I think we would try another hotel. This one was comfortable and convenient (next to Eaton's Centre) but nothing to go back for.

Room Tip: We were in an executive/business suite and it had all of the above amenities.

“I take back my previous review; I feel duped!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

So, previously, I reviewed this hotel asking what's with all the hate? I had only ever stayed in a nice King suite. I've stayed at this hotel numerous times and have recommended it to lots of people. Boy, am I embarrassed. Now that I live close to Toronto, and attend school downtown, I was planning on staying here more often as my little place in the city for late nights at school, winter storms, and conferences--in fact, I stayed for 4 days last week because of a conference I was attending downtown.

Anyway, long story short, I found a great deal on the hotel's own website for a King room (not suite); I've only ever stayed in the suite before but the pictures looked nice and I naturally assumed that the standard king room would be the same as the suite, decor- and quality-wise, just much smaller without the living area and second bathroom. I was horribly wrong. I even requested a quiet room away from elevators so I could sleep and study. Upon checkin, I added an extra day to my stay (another big mistake, I should have looked at the room first) and had to prepay it to get the same web rate. I was sent up to a room on the 4th floor. This room looked like it belonged in a horror movie. It was horribly ugly, with faded pink fabric and decor, pink stained carpets with a moldy blue-black tinge around all the baseboards AND it was right next to the air exhaust from Wai La Heen (Chinese restaurant downstairs), so not only was it noisy but it STANK horribly too. I called downstairs and asked for a new room. I had to PAY to upgrade to a king suite because it was so bad. And since I had already prepaid for the room, including the 4th night now, I couldn't go anywhere else. Plus, the hotels downtown were booked up for various conferences.

I feel like I was ripped off, like it was some kind of bait and switch scam and although I complained, nobody would do anything for me. This went from being my favourite hotel to the WORST hotel and I could never in good conscience recommend it to anybody again. I am kind of sad because it was my favourite hotel in Toronto--I've even received letters from the manager thanking me for my positive reviews and comments from the checkout survey. And I was a good, loyal customer; I always ordered room service and tipped well, and recommended the hotel.

Well, to anybody thinking of staying here, I say BEWARE. I stayed here to save a little money from the official conference hotel and I now ended up paying a ton more than the conference hotel and for far inferior quality.

Room Tip: Don't stay here. You won't get a good room unless you pay for the King suite, and even then...

“Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

The location is great. the price is right, but this is not a luxury downtown hotel. The bathroom fixtures are old. I really get annoyed when the bathroom light is connected to the bathroom fan. The noise is awful. The TV is about 10 years old. I had the breakfast buffet which is included in the price. It was nothing special but no wi-fi in the restaurant meant I went to Starbucks the next morning. No mini bar or fridge. There is just a desk no table in the room which made it a bit difficult to spread out my work documents.

The cleaning staff were pleasant and very competent. The front desk was slow at check out.

If you aren't spending a lot of time in the hotel and need access to downtown Toronto, then this location is excellent. Just don't expect a lot from the hotel.

“Except for location, nothing going for it.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Stayed at the Metropolitan in Toronto, and I have to say it was worse than a motel.

Glad I didn't pay for it, business did, but woul dnot recommend this place.

Everything is old. From the 2.5 wide closet, to the taps in the sink, to the shower head. Definately not at 4 star hotel.

Internet is not high speed! More comparable to a 56k modem, can't even watch a YouTube clip without it timing out.

Only thing going for this is the location, just between City Hall and Greyhound station.

No fridge, microwave, or anything to store food. Meant only for overnight stay, not week long like I did.

I suspect bed bugs, as I got a few bites, but haven't seen them, albeit I see black dots (shells?) on the bed spread after a night sleep.

TV is old CRT type. Noisy fan in washroom, and noisy a/c-heating unit by window. This place is tired.

Room is small, comparable to Motel 6 size, but that's only $74/night, not $200.

Room Tip: Rooms to the east, or steet side have a view above 15 stories, otherwise looking into other apartmen...

“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed in this hotel for a week on our first stay in Toronto and loved it. The bed was spacious. The cot we requested arrived at the room just minutes after us. The room was always clean when we returned, even when we just stepped out for breakfast. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel because I thought it was expensive but actually it's pretty standard for the down town area.
The coffee machine was easy to use, three phone extensions, nice view and great location. We will definitely be staying here again! The only blip was room service was expensive and the tip was included and the service wasn't great. He dropped the food, turned and left.
Everything is in easy walk, from the Universities to the CN tower, nothing is more than 30 minutes on easy clean streets.
