“Great place to spend a weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

We stayed for a weekend at Enid's and were very happy with the experience. The Jungle room was fun - a decent room with a private bath/shower - decorated with an eccentric assortment of jungle-related murals, toys, pictures, and linens. The breakfast was well prepared and served by our host with just the right mix of attention, conversation, and time by ourselves.

Would we go back? Absolutely.

“Enid needs to retire and let family or advisors run her B&B Business”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

I had stayed here once many years ago and it was ok, kind of unusual, but that was not off-putting. This time, the B&B had definitely gone sledding downhill. The decor, while eccentric, was claustrophobic - every surface covered with some bauble, mirror, piece of junque. There was no room in my room to do anything but sleep. Arriving, there were dirty cups/glasses in the room, not certain the sheets had been changed. Keeping the stiff upper lip, I slept on top of the bedding as it was warm. We had a heavy rain and the bath flooded, wetting all our towels. I never were given replacement towels - had to go on a hunt for them. There was a very strange older man lurking about - not sure if he was the boyfriend, repairman, or what? The floors were not clean, everything looked as though it needed a swiffer duster or throwing out. The electrical looked suspect, flickering etc. Call Mike Holmes from Holmes on Homes from HGTV...he would have had a heart attack seeing the repairs, electrical and plumbing details which are slap daggery at best. For breakfast Enid made a small amount of coffee, apparently our ration was one small teacup of coffee. Thank Goodness there was a Starbucks within walking distance. I think Enid made a good effort back in the beginning, but her age with its limitations in all categories, has made it pretty obvious that she had taken on more than she can handle. I believe if this place were inspected, it would be shut down immediately. The location is good, near the beaches, but parking is NOT available on the streets overnight. It is by permit, and we needed to park a goodly ways off. Very off-putting! Time to retire, Enid, and take 95% of your 'theme items' with you. This would make a very nice place to stay if repainted, stripped of themes, carpets replaced, plumbing and electrical inspected and repaired by a trained repairman. Until then, I cannot recommend this at any level nor return myself.

“what you see is what you get”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2010

Enid is a delightful elderly British lady but her B & B is a mess. Although there may be some who enjoy the "fanciful" nature of her home, we found it to be horribly dirty and
cluttered with dirty old stuffed animals and "fairy creatures" everywhere - hanging from the ceiling, peering out from crevices, and even on the bathroom floor. The carpets are matted and filthy, the tiny hallway to our bedroom was dark and couldn't have been more than a foot and a half wide, the spray in the shower had no holder so you had to either hold it while you were showering (a good trick if you can do it) or let it dangle, and if you let it dangle the water goes everywhere. Someone went into our daughter's room sometime during the day while we were out and took her pillows. What's that about??? The whole house is dark and the walls are painted with wild jungle scenes that are claustrophobic and mirrors of all sizes are everywhere that bounce back the images of the painted walls and hanging critters. There was loud banging and construction going on during the day and in the early morning hours and mattresses blocked the way into our rooms. The "breakfast" consisted of unchilled cut up fruit with warm, disgusting-tasting yogurt on top, and store-bought muffins. It turned my stomach after one bite and we wound up eating breakfast out. (We totally skipped her "breakfast" the second morning of our stay.) Enid read a poem to us while we were trying to down her food, and the poem was charming, but it didn't make up for the rest of it. She doesn't have the beds made up, so how you leave your room is how you find it when you return later in the day or evening. There's no place to park. The street is permit parking only - we never saw a sign and wound up getting a $30 ticket - so you have to walk up the block to the light and then walk three blocks up a hill to a free parking lot. I took pictures of the place to show my friends because it's just not to be believed. If one is looking for cleanliness, comfort, and just plain feeling good about where you're staying, this isn't it. I feel badly because Enid herself is charming, but I'd rather pitch a tent in the pouring rain on the beach than stay there again. It was a rip-off of the grandest proportions.

“Best Location for a Young Family”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2009

Great walking distance to shops, the Beach, playground, Kew Gardens, Eating, Bakeries and a pretty fun trolley ride down Queen Street. Super fast to downtown Toronto via the Gardner Expressway - 10 minutes tops. But with a one and a half year old there was plenty to do without going far. No other B and B's were this close.

As for the actual Bed and Breakfast, it seems Enid is taking into account the 'Constructive' Critisism written on this site. Happy to say there were absolutely no bed bugs in the 'Wonderland Room.' The sheets and towels were smelling sweet and clean. The room is rough around the edges (carpet needs ripping out and the kitchenette desperately needs updating)...BUT during our three night stay Enid was in action hiring a Cleaner in the main house to empty out her closets and clutter, as well she had two new refridgerators being installed - one for the main house and one for our kitchenette - so I assume in the future she will be cleaning out the Wonderland Room as well. We had a tour of the "Jungle Room" which looked FABULOUS. It was clean of trinkets and was odourless. An electrician was updating the one-hundred year old lighting outside our door, and the front entry way was being re-paved.

Fresh fruit for breakfast, fresh raisin bread or multi-grain bread each morning with jam and butter, coffee or tea. The best thing really was the spirit of the home itself, which is not your typical Victorian B & B. The garden walkway greeted our daughter each morning - she was able to use our private entrance to run around outdoors in the secluded yard amongst birds and squirrels and raccoons (its Toronto - 'coons are the norm) and throw stones in the pond amongst the fairies. The garden was lit up at night with blue and white lights...Beautiful. Enid provided our child with plenty of things to play with during our breakfast, and we enjoyed getting to know about her written and artistic endeavours.

This place is for the more adventuresome and seasoned travellers who can handle the oddities of different lifestyles and want a unique experience. Get a hotel if you have predictable standards.

Oh yes. Parking on the street. Free for all three nights.
