“Reminder to be joyful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

I had the good fortune of finding Enid and her bed and breakfast at a time when I needed a short term rental while my new home was being prepared this year. I cannot say enough about Enid and her wonderful, magical home. Enid is a definite reminder that life is to be lived and not just existed.

I stayed for seven amazing weeks. While my life was in upheaval and disarray, Enid's hospitality and joie de vivre constantly reminded me that whatever life throws at you laughter and love (as her home is filled with her love of life) are always the best medicine. Enid made me very welcome! While my job is very hectic, time consuming and stressful, coming back to the B & B always brought a smile to my face and a calming effect while I drove to my temporary home.

I stayed in the Jungle Room. Loved it! I always seemed to discover something new in the room whenever I looked around. The bathroom was so much fun. The theme of the room is jungle so naturally stuffed animals abounded with a fantastic hand painted mural on the wall. And in what I now know is Enid's style the mural has a story attached (ask her how she found the painter of the mural). In fact Enid's life is full of magical stories and whimsy and always to find the humour in all, even in the bad and absurd. Hence her home is filled with her ideas of what life should be.

The beaches neighbourhood and her home's close proximity to everything was perfect. I could access the public transit quite easily. And the beaches neighbourhood...well is magical....just like Enid. It's a good thing she lives there!

I found Enid's Beaches Bed and Breakfast in a local newspaper. Good thing I did because if I had read the reviews below I too may not have chosen to go. But as the saying goes "THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON" and boy oh boy am I the lucky one!!

I would highly recommend a visit to Enid's Beaches Bed and Breakfast. It is a perfect location for access to downtown Toronto and of course the beach itself and all the neighbourhood has to offer.

Thank you Enid for reminding me to not be so serious and to see the joy in everything. You were a blessing for me to find.

“So bad we didn't stay!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 March 2011

My wife and I, even though we live in Toronto thought it would be fun to go to a bed and breakfast for our anniversary. When we got in we found a place that was so cluttered with junk that and tacky decor that it made me uncomfortable from the get go.
We decided to at least look at the room and we'd stick it out until I ended up having an asthma attack from the dust. With so much clutter of stuff, there is no way you can clean properly. There were even plush toys as part of the themes in the washroom….absolutely disgusting!
We didn’t get our money back, but we didn’t try that hard either as I just wanted to get out of the place as fast as I could.
Bottom line this is the kind of place that we should have reported.

“Great place to spend a weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

We stayed for a weekend at Enid's and were very happy with the experience. The Jungle room was fun - a decent room with a private bath/shower - decorated with an eccentric assortment of jungle-related murals, toys, pictures, and linens. The breakfast was well prepared and served by our host with just the right mix of attention, conversation, and time by ourselves.

Would we go back? Absolutely.

“Enid needs to retire and let family or advisors run her B&B Business”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

I had stayed here once many years ago and it was ok, kind of unusual, but that was not off-putting. This time, the B&B had definitely gone sledding downhill. The decor, while eccentric, was claustrophobic - every surface covered with some bauble, mirror, piece of junque. There was no room in my room to do anything but sleep. Arriving, there were dirty cups/glasses in the room, not certain the sheets had been changed. Keeping the stiff upper lip, I slept on top of the bedding as it was warm. We had a heavy rain and the bath flooded, wetting all our towels. I never were given replacement towels - had to go on a hunt for them. There was a very strange older man lurking about - not sure if he was the boyfriend, repairman, or what? The floors were not clean, everything looked as though it needed a swiffer duster or throwing out. The electrical looked suspect, flickering etc. Call Mike Holmes from Holmes on Homes from HGTV...he would have had a heart attack seeing the repairs, electrical and plumbing details which are slap daggery at best. For breakfast Enid made a small amount of coffee, apparently our ration was one small teacup of coffee. Thank Goodness there was a Starbucks within walking distance. I think Enid made a good effort back in the beginning, but her age with its limitations in all categories, has made it pretty obvious that she had taken on more than she can handle. I believe if this place were inspected, it would be shut down immediately. The location is good, near the beaches, but parking is NOT available on the streets overnight. It is by permit, and we needed to park a goodly ways off. Very off-putting! Time to retire, Enid, and take 95% of your 'theme items' with you. This would make a very nice place to stay if repainted, stripped of themes, carpets replaced, plumbing and electrical inspected and repaired by a trained repairman. Until then, I cannot recommend this at any level nor return myself.

“what you see is what you get”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2010

Enid is a delightful elderly British lady but her B & B is a mess. Although there may be some who enjoy the "fanciful" nature of her home, we found it to be horribly dirty and
cluttered with dirty old stuffed animals and "fairy creatures" everywhere - hanging from the ceiling, peering out from crevices, and even on the bathroom floor. The carpets are matted and filthy, the tiny hallway to our bedroom was dark and couldn't have been more than a foot and a half wide, the spray in the shower had no holder so you had to either hold it while you were showering (a good trick if you can do it) or let it dangle, and if you let it dangle the water goes everywhere. Someone went into our daughter's room sometime during the day while we were out and took her pillows. What's that about??? The whole house is dark and the walls are painted with wild jungle scenes that are claustrophobic and mirrors of all sizes are everywhere that bounce back the images of the painted walls and hanging critters. There was loud banging and construction going on during the day and in the early morning hours and mattresses blocked the way into our rooms. The "breakfast" consisted of unchilled cut up fruit with warm, disgusting-tasting yogurt on top, and store-bought muffins. It turned my stomach after one bite and we wound up eating breakfast out. (We totally skipped her "breakfast" the second morning of our stay.) Enid read a poem to us while we were trying to down her food, and the poem was charming, but it didn't make up for the rest of it. She doesn't have the beds made up, so how you leave your room is how you find it when you return later in the day or evening. There's no place to park. The street is permit parking only - we never saw a sign and wound up getting a $30 ticket - so you have to walk up the block to the light and then walk three blocks up a hill to a free parking lot. I took pictures of the place to show my friends because it's just not to be believed. If one is looking for cleanliness, comfort, and just plain feeling good about where you're staying, this isn't it. I feel badly because Enid herself is charming, but I'd rather pitch a tent in the pouring rain on the beach than stay there again. It was a rip-off of the grandest proportions.
