“Expensive, hot, and cramped room in Rundle House”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 July 2007

I booked the room for 3 nights and it was described as a nice sized queen room with four poster bed with full bath. Basically that was right, but as we opened the door we were warned not to shower in our closet or hang clothes in the shower and we soon knew what they meant. The room had 3 little doors that contained a small closet, equally small shower, and tucked in the third small closet was the sink and toilet. The room was stuffy because the whole house air did not cool this room (326) with bright sunlight coming in at 5:30 AM through the uncovered leaded glass windows (there were wood shades on the bottom but not the top windows). The hallway was at least 10 degrees cooler but the door could not be left open because a house cat was constantly trying to enter the room and I have terrible allergies to cats.
Parking was not free like I was led to believe and cost an additional $59 for the three nights.
The staff were friendly and breakfast was good and the room was luxurious but that did not overcome the shortfalls of a $299 per night claustrophobic sized room. There are much better deals in the city.
Beware that you ask for all the hidden costs and details.

“much room for improvement”

I stayed here for a few nights with my daughterin october. My husband had already stayed here on a separate trip and recommended it highly. We were actually in one of the other restored houses at 512 Jarvis Street.
It's a funny place-the building is attractive and the drawing room downstairs is stuffed with beautiful antiques and a grand piano. It is most impressive and guests are welcome to use this room.
We were given a room at the top of the house and quite frankly it was a dump. On the plus side it was quiet, and there's a door leading out to a roo f garden beside the room but the roof garden hasn't been touched and there was just one plastic chair and an ashtray out there.
The room was very small with a hotch potch of mis- matched junk shop furniture. The walls were in desperate need of a coat of paint and the lighting wasn't great. The shared bathroom was down the creaky hall and I found that quite difficult. The unknown person we shared with always seemed to be in there when I wanted to go! The bathroom was spotlessly clean but so small.
The single beds were comfortable but squeaked. There was no room to put anything.
Breakfast was in a lovely old fashioned parlour with small tables and chairs, a beautiful tiled floor and old fashioned dresser. Everything spotless again but I was disappointed with the food. The same loaf of bread was put out to be toasted every morning for five mornings and the jams were cheap supermarket jams in messy pots-just like home! The cakes and muffins were shop bought and there were rolls of ham and cheeses just sitting there. Coffee was fresh and we were able to nip down and make a cuppa anytime which was a big plus.
Staff were mostly friendly and there was a charming man on breakfast duty every morning who was very kind to my daughter.
This place has enormous potential but I don't think that it's as good as it should be for the money they charge.
I don't think I would go back, although the central location is attractive.

  • Liked — central location, charming hosts, cleanliness and open kitchen.
  • Disliked — the room, sharing a bathroom, breakfast.
  • Tips/Secrets — I think this is a place you love or hate. Go with an open mind. The hosts are charming.

“What's All the Fuss About??”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2006

After reading some of the raves about this B&B, I'm honestly perplexed. Were we staying at the same place??
Granted, I spent only one night at Cawthra Square and it was mid-week, so maybe they have better service on weekends.
in any case, the room was dark and I was charged an enourmous amount of money to stay there - mid week yet! - due to some convention that was in town. I guess they figured they would gouge people, just because they could.
The breakfast in the morning was basically a continental type thing. muffins, coffee etc. Certainly not worth the bucks I spent to stay there.
I'd never stayed at a B&B before and I was not impressed with this one.
And the other thing that annoyed me was, the guy who took my reservation basically said he had one room left and if I wanted it I should grab it before it got booked up, so I took it in a panic. I SWEAR, I was the only one staying there that night! The place was practically deserted and the management was never around. I felt like the whole inn was empty. I think I was lied to.

“Lackluster”

I stayed in one of the restored houses in a garret room with poor lighting, no seating and two sleeping couches. The first floor was lovely -- for a victorian home. Sitting down for a read in the main room was, alas, uncomfortable. I guess I'm too used to lounging.

It's certainly well located. The breakfast is fair. Nothing to rave about. But I learned how to use their coffee maker. Staff was not in evidence.

“Not a good value at all”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2004

I stayed here for 2 nights expecting very plush accommodations given the price and reviews. I was very disappointed. I booked the Customer Appreciation special, but it was still over 200 canadian dollars a night for a small room with a queen bed and a bathroom with whirlpool tub.

The room had a nice bed and dresser, but the decor was otherwise totally unremarkable and not charming in the way one expects from a B and B. The bathroom looked very unfinished and was not laid out well.

The breakfast was a disgrace. The pastries were not fresh, the juice was canned tasting, and it made 'continental' worse than I expect from chains.

The staff was really inconsistent. They seemed preoccupied, even though it clearly wasn't crowded there. When they welcomed us, it felt more like we were listening to a recording. Their recommendations for dining were ridiculous.

The location of the BandB is good as you can reach most destinations on foot, but it is absolutely nothing special. Save your money.
