Stayed over the weekend (April 20-23) and although service is fine, the room I was in was definitely showing it's age. Flowered unmatched wallpaper, a very poor water flow shower head, cracked tile etc in the bathroom. Perhaps the room assignment was due to the fact that I was given the "friends/family" rate, and I certainly wasn't expecting a Junior Suite; however, this room was just tired. It was also VERY noisy where we were, lots of people shouting up and down the hallways at 2am, we just put in our ear plugs and went back to sleep. The beds are wonderful though, very comfy!
Working in the industry I do tend to be picky; however, seeing the doorman leave a lady to open the limo door herself and not offer to carry her bag or get a bellman to carry her bag was shocking! Perhaps the RYH has too many staff and they need the Doormen to be "Porters" that take care of both the cars and the bags. They certainly had enough people standing around to take care of all the guests needs...they just didn't.
I also found the in-room information to be outdated. It states there is a restaurant called "York's Kitchen" that serves a breakfast buffett; however, upon calling the concierge I was informed that "Epic" was the only place available for breakfast.
Breakfast was very good; however, the service lacked. It's like they almost get it right but something goes wrong in the execution.
Dinner at "Epic" was delicious and service was attentive but not intrusive. Very refreshing! Room Service for lunch was quick and delicious!
I was shocked to discover there were no vending machines with the ice machine. I wanted a botttle of water and when I called to ask where I could get one I was told I could order one from room service. The price was $1.50 plus the $4 delivery fee and tip!!! Outrageous! A vending machine could have charged me $2 and I would have been happy!
All in all the RYH is a very nice hotel, it's fancy in it's decor, the staff look good in their uniforms and some are outstanding (front desk and bell desk in particular); however, the overall is disappointing. I'm afraid if I were paying full price I would have been VERY disappointed, as it was I was satisfied, but certainly not overwhelmed.
Spend the extra for a Junior Suite if you can, so worth it!
