“Great hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

The Fairmont is a great, old, beautiful hotel. My husband, daughter and I came for a night stay in Toronto in January. The door man was very nice and helped us with our bags. (Just a note that the underground garage is not very obvious it’s behind the building in the alley and you get in through another building.) The check in desk was great! The lady was very nice and happy. Nice to see! They gave my daughter a little stuffed lion called Rory. Apparently they give these to the little ones. They also sent up cookies and milk to our room!! We got an upgrade for a small charge and it was worth the extra money. The room is a bit tired she needs a little lift, however the beds are comfortable and clean! The room was clean and the two bathroom great. Other then a bit tired as well. I love the old details with the chandeliers hope they will keep those if they ever renovate. There are many restaurants near by lots to choose from. There is a Tim Hortons at the corner from the hotel if you need something quick in the morning.

Overall our experience was great service fantastic. We had a small issue with neighbours that were a bit loud however we did not let that dampen our stay!!

Room Tip: book on line and add a upgrade if it becomes available for a bit extra.

“Beautiful, historical building that is worth a visit.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I stayed here recently for two nights. The building is beautiful and if you have never been inside before, you will be impressed Take the time to view the historical photographs and information boards posted on the mezzanine level.

I have been to the Royal York on previvous occassions for various events and conferences. The staff do an excellent job of making sure your needs are taken care of in a polite and attentive manner. The lobby bar is a great place to sit and people watch altough the drinks are not cheap! I love the convenience of having the underground pathway below the building and the easy access to all of the downtown venues.

The rooms are small (consider the time period in which the building was constructed) but they are comfortable and clean. My room was somewhat larger than my friend's and it had more storage space which I appreciated. The water pressure was a bit of an issue while I was there.

It is worth staying at this historical hotel at least once but there are more reasonably priced hotels in the downtown area with more space and more modern conveniences.

Thank you for your feedback. We are thrilled to learn that you enjoy the historic photo gallery on our Main Mezzanine. It’s also wonderful to hear that our staff have always taken care of your needs in an attentive manner. We hope that you will continue to choose our hotel during your visits to Toronto. If you find yourself at another property, remember to stop by Epic (lobby restaurant & lounge) for a cocktail and people watching.

“Worst room ever”

I booked a room at the Royal York hotel in Toronto as a dramatic finish to a wonderful vacation. At first I was excited by the lavish and elegant lobby. To my disappointment however, nothing else lived up to my expectations.

The room we were shown to was tiny. The wallpaper in the room was water damaged and peeling in several places, this fit perfectly with the peeling paint. The bathroom was dirty, a messy mirror and Kleenex stained with blue cleaner added a dreary element to the outdated décor. A tub that refused to hold water and toilet paper that was almost finished added a casual element of contempt. The bed had over-starched sheets and the pillows were very uncomfortable. The TV did not function properly and we were unable to use any of the extended features. The shock of seeing a bottle of room temperature water left out with an attached price tag warning that; if the seal was broken an additional five dollars would be added to the bill added insult to injury.

I will not mention the outdated technology of the room since this does add some charm in the form of nostalgia, beyond the comment that it would be nice if it at least functioned as it was originally intended.

I have stayed in many hotels and motels in a few countries now and I must say that your average Motel 6 in Canada has better rooms at much better prices then the “Royal” York hotel in Toronto.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

“Old fashion railway chic is alive and well”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

This grand old lady is well worth a stay or even visit if your in Toronto. I have now stayed twice and the service and quality has been of a high standard each time. Rooms and bed linens clean and tidy. The hotel is directly opposite Union Station - handy if you arrive by train, and the airport shuttle bus picks up and drops off right outside its door frequently. It is linked by the underground walk ways of Toronto and is within easy walking distance of a lot of major attractions. Concierge desk knowledgeable and polite. Day tours easily booked from here with pick ups and drop offs. Yo may pay a little more to stay here but not as much as some places who are not as good.
