“A little faded at the edges...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2010

The White Fox Inn is located about 10 miles outside Thunder Bay. At first, I was disappointed about its location but having visited downtown TB - which is a bit of a dump - i was pleased at least to be out in the countryside even though we had to drive miles to get anywhere usually past smelly paper mills. The rooms 'could do better'. The bed cover had definitely seen better days and some of the fittings could do with refreshing - the pillows were incredibly lumpy. One day the housekeeping service simply amounted to the bed being remade - towels etc were all exactly as we left them. I don't pay an expensive hotel for that kind of sloppiness. On the plus side, the breakfasts were excellent and the staff generally pleasent and helpful. Because it was in the countryside, wildlife was plentiful and one night we watched young bears playing on the lawn with their mother on her hind legs eating crabapples.

“Quality has slipped in the last decade”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2010

Went for our 25th anniversary after being there with a good experience 12 years ago. The location is very quiet and private therefore away from shopping and entertainment.
We enjoyed a quiet and clean room (Elise) that was nice with a comfortable bed. Jacuzzi was excellent. Champagne as promised. However ... the quality has slipped since our last visit.
TV could not be viewed from the bed. Shower door would not close. Only had 2 towels.
Paid for a "Frisky Fox" package at the weekend rate, but the rate was not adjusted even though we went during a weekday. Had a view of parking lot while having a mediocre meal. Our actual table with the view of the backyard was given to walk ins that didn't stay the night. Had to get our own napkins and cutlery from another table. Were limited to what was "allowed" to be ordered from the menu as part of the package which is not mentioned anywhere. Even the salad at $7?? Ordered the max allowed under under the package and were served tough steak with corn. Desert was limited to 3 of the items on the menu the rest were not available. No attempt was made to credit the extras (wine) towards the extra money already paid but were billed $35 on top of what was paid. No pen or paper to make notes. The guide for the Inn was in a duo tang and in poor condition - someone had torn out a piece of the paper as they also needed to make notes. No brochure or comment sheets available.
Wait staff very limited and stretched although they were very apologetic for the issues. The issues mentioned in this review are not their fault. We never did meet the management.
Building itself has deteriorated, needs paint and facelift. The iron was electrically unsafe so we did not use.
Spent the next couple of nites in the Presidential Suite at another location and were more satisfied for less expense.

“Feel like home away from home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 April 2010

As someone who travels to Thunder Bay regularly, I appreciate the relaxed quiet setting of the WFI. Where else could I have spotted deer, a beaver and a black bear on my way to and from work?
Granted, it is difficult to find a member of the staff when needed but they treat me right, give me my regular room, and are responsive to any request.

“Double-booked wedding, and no apology?!?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2009

Booked the entire Inn for a wedding (all guest rooms, ceremony, dinner, brunch, etc). When a date mix-up was discovered and our function had been double-booked, my fiance and I so loved the setting that we considered moving dates to keep the Inn. However, the response from the Inn staff was so unapologetic and downright rude at times that we have since taken our business elsewere.

“Wedding night at the White Fox Inn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2008

It's a good thing I called to confirm our reservation for our wedding night as we were also told they had lost all of their bookings due to a computer problem. Luckily when we "re-booked" the room we had previously booked was still available, so we had no problems there.

We stayed in "Elise" which is their honeymoon suite. The bed was very comfortable and the jacuzzi tub in the room was awesome.

We had dinner in the restaurant the first night, which was very good, but we found that the menu was pretty limited. For a couple that doesn't eat seafood, we found ourselves with only a couple of other options (beef tenderloin, chicken). They also had duck and lamb on the menu, but we didn't care for it. We had dinner reservations for the second night we stayed as well, but we decided to cancel them and eat elsewhere since we didn't see much else on the menu that we could see ourselves eating.

The room was very clean although we did come across a few creepy crawlers during our stay. Most likely because the building is so old, but it still turned us off a bit. Also, we stayed two nights and when the housekeeping staff cleaned the room after the first night, they just hung all our dirty towels and facecloths back up, for us to use again. We had actually wanted them replenished as some were dirty.

It was very hot during our stay and we had to keep the AC running all night. It was very loud and we did not sleep all that well - every time the AC kicked on throughout the night we were woken up.

We also found it strange that there was no pop or vending machines on the premises. After dinner and into the evening we became thirsty and wanted a snack, but there was nowhere to get one! Being out in the "boonies" a bit, we didn't feel like travelling into the city to get some drinks and munchies, so it would have been much more convenient had they had a pop/vending machine.

The White Fox Inn is located on some very beautiful land, and the Inn itself is gorgeous and staff very friendly - but my husband and I agree that we won't be staying there again. We can get a room just as nice, closer to the city, with a bigger restaurant and vending machines for cheaper!

  • Liked — The beautiful outdoor scenery
  • Disliked — The dinner menu
