“Dirty and neglected.”

Please see the photos that I have included with this review.

This stately inn is situated on a quiet road away from the main part of the city. It offers free on-site parking, as well as complimentary breakfast which you schedule the night before.

We stayed in the Valembray East room which was cozy, if not a little cramped. Our overall impression walking in the room was OK, however the decor appeared more than a little dated. That being said, it was sufficient for our purposes - we just needed a place to hang out and sleep before and after a wedding.

Once we started to settle in, we started to notice problems.

As soon as I went to sit down on the bed, I noticed the state of the bed cover and decorative pillows. They were very dirty with stains upon stains. They were starting to take on a blackish hue from years of dirt. I shoveled them all on the floor because I didn't even want to be near them.

At one point my wife made use of the spare blanket from the closet. That too was starting to change color as it looked as though it had not been laundered in some time.

Other cleanliness issues were apparent too. For example, the coffee maker and drinking cups were stored on dirty shelves within an arm's length of the toilet. The fabric mat that the cups sat upon looked like it hadn't been washed in over a year. There were areas that were incredibly dusty and had not seen recent cleaning. The toilet was covered in streaks of black mold. Very gross and not sanitary. In the evenings I wore white socks and by the time I took them off to go to bed, they were almost black - the carpet was utterly filthy.

There were maintenance problems as well. The blinds were old and tattered, the portable stereo was missing the volume knob, the shower curtain broke when we tried to use it, the sink and bath stoppers were broken, and somebody had done an unattractive repair on the sink plumbing that looked like it was made out of junk.

I have included photos in this review, please view them to see that I'm not exaggerating!

In the evenings we tried to pass the time watching TV and surfing the Internet. The TV was a small, low-definition model with limited channel selection, but at least it worked. And that's more that I can say for the supposedly free WiFi, which we could not connect to for the duration of our trip. The host tried 5 times but ultimately admitted he didn't know what to do to fix it. Major inconvenience!

I was able to take a nice long soak in the jet tub. That was quite a pleasure for me because I'm a tall guy that doesn't get to enjoy baths very often. The tile and jet tub were clean and looked like they were in newer condition, so did the sink.

As for sleeping, the room was quiet and peaceful, and the beds were comfortable. The one thing that counts the most they got right, thankfully.

But in the morning the alarm clock did not go off! As a result of the broken alarm clock, we slept through our complimentary breakfast and were put almost 2 hours behind schedule. I was 30 minutes late to the wedding rehearsal because of this!!!

I later confirmed that we set it correctly and that it was just broken, and not something we did wrong. I even took a video of it not working. Thankfully the host provided a replacement.

While I was away at the rehearsal, my wife was able to see the room in the light of day. She was so turned off by the stains on our mattress pad and sheets, she called to have all the linens replaced. The staff changed them without complaint but told my wife that although they were clean, most of the linens at the Inn had permanent stains.

After the wedding we returned for our final night stay. I didn't want to stay the second night, I wanted to go to a nice clean hotel. Unfortunately, the Inn demanded payment up-front, so we were stuck there with no way to get refunded for the 2nd day.

On the second night, I went to the front at 9:30 to ask for ice. Where was the host? Nowhere to be seen. He went home early even though the front desk is supposed to stay open until 10:00.

I decided to go through a door, which is where I had seen the host getting ice the previous night. By doing so I unwittingly found my way into the kitchen! I saw that it was very dirty, so much so that my wife and I chose not to order breakfast the next morning.

We experienced so many problems that we could not recommend this place to anybody. Our experience there didn't offer one single thing to wow or impress us. The worst part is that they charged $40 a night more than hotels that are nicer than they are!

When checking out I made the host aware of many of the issues. He didn't seem very interested in listening, I'm sure he's heard it all before. On the bright side, he did ultimately refund us $30 per night.

All in all, The White Fox Inn looks like a place that was probably very nice once upon a time, but has suffered due to years of neglect.

I definitely DO NOT recommend The White Fox Inn.

“Wedding with many problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

My husbands step-daughter was recently married at the White Fox and the problems were numberous. The first problem we experienced was arriving at the White Fox on Friday, with the fresh flowers, only to find the place locked up tight. We banged and banged on the door but no one answered. I walked around the back and found the tent company guys setting up the tent for the wedding and they said they thought that someone was inside but didnt know how to get in. I tried every door and found one leading to the kitchen that was open. I went inside to what was like a porch/storage area that was extremely dirty. I then went in further and found a door into the kithcen. I found an employee and asked if the could open the front door. They immediatly did. We quickly got the flowers put away. We checked into the room we were staying in and I quickly noticed how run down the Inn was. The sink in the bathroom was cracked, the jacuzzi looked very old, some paint around the window was peeling but what bothered me the most was how dirty the room was. The floor in the bathroom was covered in long black hair and the toilet bowl had streaks of what looked like black mold. There was dust everywhere and it looked like the room hadnt been cleaned in along time. The carpet in the room was light brown and have several stains that looked like bleach. I also notice that the carpet in the halls leading to the rooms, looked like it hadnt been vaccumed in quite some time. I went outside to have a look at the grounds and quickly noticed that they were also in need of attention. There was a great deal of garbage near and visable to the wedding tent, the grounds needed a lot of raking and the grass had not been cut. A I was very upset because the tent company already had the tent up and there would be no way of cutting the grass inside the tent. I went to find my stepdaughters room to discuss what needed to be done and when I arrived at her room, she was very upset because she couldnt find anywhere in the room to hang her dress that wasnt dirty and dusty. We knew that we needed to have a discussion with the owner, Lisa, about the quote as the bride was still confused as to what she owed, what she was getting and not getting. The quote was always misunderstood by the bride. While that is not the fault of the White Fox, the White Fox does advertise on their web site that they will do all the free consultations that are necessary. If there is confusion about anything, the White Fox, being the professionals, should ensure that the bride and groom understand the terms. I also found it very very strange that every single penny, including the rooms, gratuity, everything had to be paid in advance. Because the bride and groom opted for a cash bar, they had to pay an $8 per person upcharge and there was even a 15% gratuity on that. I always thought that when you are tipping someone, it was because you have received exceptional service and it was a way of rewarding the person who deserved it. I felt that this "upcharge" was completely ridiculous. The White Fox owner, Lisa, claimed that she must charge that because with a cash bar, people dont drink as much as they do with open bar and since she had to pay staff, we had to pay it. But at the wedding there was only one bartender. And since the White Fox made ALL the money from the bar, I could not understand this "up charge". While I agree that the food portion and a room deposit should be paid, never would I have agreed to pay the entire amount because once they have ALL your money, there is no guarantee that you will get what you paid for.....which is what happend to us.

The good and the bad.
First the good, the food was EXCELLENT. Everything for the dinner, the late night snack and the morning brunch was FAB FAB FAB. And the staff did all they could do to help and accommodate us to the best of their abilities.
Once the wedding started, everything went off without a hitch and for that, we were all very thankful. I even went and thanked the owner after the dinner.

The bad. The dirty rooms and the overall condition of the Inn was an extreme disappointment. They did mow the grass on Saturday after we complained, but as I said, it couldnt be mowed inside the tent. On Friday, when we requested that they bring us the long tables that they were supplying. We were all quite shocked at how dirty they were. We had to request buckets of water so that we could wash them. (but just so be fair, the tables and chairs from the tent rental company were no better. We had to scrub all of that too.)
On Saturday morning we requested the linens that the White Fox was providing for the tables. Once again we were shocked as to the condition that they were in. The pad covers that go under that table cloths were extremely soiled and I mean BAD. It was so bad that you could see filth thru the table cloths. We decided not you use the pads and just the table cloths but most all of the table cloths were very stained and/or had black streaks. We brought it to a staff members attention and he said he would bring out more. He returned with several more and they too, were very soiled. The staff decided to try washing them to get them clean, but we quickly realized that there just wasnt enough time and we went to linen rental company and RENTED all the table linens. The linens didnt arrive until 1:15pm the day of the wedding. Many pitched in to help get the reception area set up. Because of this many of us did not have ample time to get ready for the wedding. Some, including myself, had to cancel hair appointments and I didnt have time for a shower.

On Sunday, after the breakfast we realized that not all the bottles of wine that were paid for were actually opened or drank. Since the White Fox gets to keep them and can resale them, we thought there should be a refund. We also felt that the White Fox needed to pay for the cost of table linens since theirs were unuseable. My husband and I had been told by the bride that the rate of our room for Friday night was to be $140 + tax but our bill was $180 + tax. We were over charged $40 + tax. I also found a bill in the lobby, that was in my husbands name and held with MY personnal credit card, for the room that the bride stayed in on Friday night and for the bar tab that the bridal party ran the night of the wedding. I immediately approached the White Fox and demanded to know why my credit card was being used for SOMEONE ELSES bill. I was told that they didnt have a credit card number for the bride and groom so they were using mine. I blew a gasket and demanded that my husband and I be removed from that bill. As of this morning there is still $200 of my card card funds being held. The White Fox also has a credit card number of my husband and he will be checking his credit card daily to ensure that the owner of the White Fox has not charged him for other bills.

So as you can see, while the wedding and reception went very well and the food was amazing, at the end of the day, there were so many other issues with this establishment, I would not recommend anyone booking the White Fox for a wedding. Nor would I recommend that you stay at the White Fox for a romantic weekend. You can find other hotels in the area that offer much nicer rooms for alot less money.

“A very nice place to stay & have an excellent meal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2011

Myself & my girlfriend decided to go for an evening at the White Fox. We went with the Frisky Fox package and stayed in the Fox's Den. After having read some of the reviews on here I was leery but I have to say most proved overly critical in my opinion. The WFI is an older Inn but it has a nice quaint feel to it. I won't deny the interior of the rooms is a tad dated in the look but its actually kinda nice, cozy almost. Yes, a coat of fresh paint would spruce it up, but the room did not look run down... if it were a Vegas hotel you be thinking it had that classic 70s/80s Vegas look/feel. And I think people need to bear in mind its not Vegas or super traffic rich area so money is not pouring into the place... so of course not every detail will be perfect or repainted every month. The only "damage" that I noticed in the room was someone had banged a chair against the wall leaving a 3 inch long dent & 1 pillow had a small tear in its corner.

Overall the room was great. A nice big comfortable bed, a small table & 2 chairs, a pretty room bathroom considering, tv & dvd, bookshelf with literary classics and our favorite part a nice gas fireplace you adjust with the thermostat (not set on a cheesy 15 minute off timer gas fireplace like I've seen in some higher end lodges in Minnesota)... it was really nice, cozy and romantic. I should note the champagne bottle greeted us as we entered the room, chilled on ice by the fireplace... very nice, enough for 2 glasses a piece. Someone noted the lower hallway where this room was was banged up, marks on the wall paint. That I'll concede, but who's hanging out in the hallway? You're in it for 5 seconds going to/from your room if on the lower level. I think many of the marks are because there's an access door to the kitchen so deliveries of food might nick the wall here and there. The towels & everything in the room seemed clean, the front desk person promptly brought us a few more upon request... and was very friendly at check-in8/10 imho.

The dining room was very nice.. clean, fireplace roaring, romantically lit, big bay windows on all walls... during dinner we watched several deer walk up into the yard feeding within 10 feet of the windows. The dinner menu had many selections... a tenderloin or something like that was no longer available (a large 8 person party had ordered all of it up). We had some nice warm bread & butter, followed by shrimp and another appetizer, both of which were excellent... had very nice salads, and steak and a chicken dish for our dinners that came with diff kinds of potatoes and veggies.. cheesecake dessert & some wine. All the food was excellent and the waitress was friendly, and engaged us answering a few question about the Inns history and the different animal that would wander past. 9/10

The 2 breakfasts we ordered that nice for room service the next morning arrived promptly when we had asked for them to be... the french toast, fruit, pancakes, etc were all excellent and the portions for more than enough. We forgot to order orange juice... my gf called the front desk asking if she could come up to get 2 glasses... 3 min later before she could head up a gentleman brought them to our room. Excellent service.

Overall I thought the place was really great.. 8/10... excellent food, a very nice room, friendly service, great view when dining. If you're going for a romantic nice out for dinner I don't think you'll be disappointed if you have realistic expectations of it... I would definitely go again.

“Don't Expect much if you have a prepaid Frisky Fox Package. So disappointed!”

My hubby and I got the Frisky Fox Package as a Christmas gift from family as we love to B&B it. We have been to several B&B'S around the area, the states and in B.C. This present cost approximately $200.00 and was so not worth it. Your are supposed to be welcomed with a Split of Champagne in our room which never happened and is clearly stated in the package card, It is also says you get a four course dinner for 2 but doesn't inform you you are excluded from some of the meals and salads. My husband decided to upgrade $10,00 to order the Linguine with Lobster and it was terrible. It tasted like chemical liquid smoke. I had the chicken dish and it was okay,The onion soup and the bread with sun dried tomato tapenade was really good. The breakfast was good but definitely not gourmet as indicated on the package card. No one told us about the complementary movie selection-I had to ask as this was listed on the card as well. The glasses in the bathroom were dirty,a pillow had a hole and the bathroom could have been cleaned better. The room was very small, stuffy and dry with a few cellar bugs. The only person we had contact with was the waiter who was great at his job and engaging. I was so excited to go here but I'll never recommend it to anyone. It seems they got their cash from the pre paid package and didn't care. Such a disappointment.

“A little faded at the edges...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2010

The White Fox Inn is located about 10 miles outside Thunder Bay. At first, I was disappointed about its location but having visited downtown TB - which is a bit of a dump - i was pleased at least to be out in the countryside even though we had to drive miles to get anywhere usually past smelly paper mills. The rooms 'could do better'. The bed cover had definitely seen better days and some of the fittings could do with refreshing - the pillows were incredibly lumpy. One day the housekeeping service simply amounted to the bed being remade - towels etc were all exactly as we left them. I don't pay an expensive hotel for that kind of sloppiness. On the plus side, the breakfasts were excellent and the staff generally pleasent and helpful. Because it was in the countryside, wildlife was plentiful and one night we watched young bears playing on the lawn with their mother on her hind legs eating crabapples.
