This stately inn is situated on a quiet road away from the main part of the city. It offers free on-site parking, as well as complimentary breakfast which you schedule the night before.
We stayed in the Valembray East room which was cozy, if not a little cramped. Our overall impression walking in the room was OK, however the decor appeared more than a little dated. That being said, it was sufficient for our purposes - we just needed a place to hang out and sleep before and after a wedding.
Once we started to settle in, we started to notice problems.
As soon as I went to sit down on the bed, I noticed the state of the bed cover and decorative pillows. They were very dirty with stains upon stains. They were starting to take on a blackish hue from years of dirt. I shoveled them all on the floor because I didn't even want to be near them.
At one point my wife made use of the spare blanket from the closet. That too was starting to change color as it looked as though it had not been laundered in some time.
Other cleanliness issues were apparent too. For example, the coffee maker and drinking cups were stored on dirty shelves within an arm's length of the toilet. The fabric mat that the cups sat upon looked like it hadn't been washed in over a year. There were areas that were incredibly dusty and had not seen recent cleaning. The toilet was covered in streaks of black mold. Very gross and not sanitary. In the evenings I wore white socks and by the time I took them off to go to bed, they were almost black - the carpet was utterly filthy.
There were maintenance problems as well. The blinds were old and tattered, the portable stereo was missing the volume knob, the shower curtain broke when we tried to use it, the sink and bath stoppers were broken, and somebody had done an unattractive repair on the sink plumbing that looked like it was made out of junk.
I have included photos in this review, please view them to see that I'm not exaggerating!
In the evenings we tried to pass the time watching TV and surfing the Internet. The TV was a small, low-definition model with limited channel selection, but at least it worked. And that's more that I can say for the supposedly free WiFi, which we could not connect to for the duration of our trip. The host tried 5 times but ultimately admitted he didn't know what to do to fix it. Major inconvenience!
I was able to take a nice long soak in the jet tub. That was quite a pleasure for me because I'm a tall guy that doesn't get to enjoy baths very often. The tile and jet tub were clean and looked like they were in newer condition, so did the sink.
As for sleeping, the room was quiet and peaceful, and the beds were comfortable. The one thing that counts the most they got right, thankfully.
But in the morning the alarm clock did not go off! As a result of the broken alarm clock, we slept through our complimentary breakfast and were put almost 2 hours behind schedule. I was 30 minutes late to the wedding rehearsal because of this!!!
I later confirmed that we set it correctly and that it was just broken, and not something we did wrong. I even took a video of it not working. Thankfully the host provided a replacement.
While I was away at the rehearsal, my wife was able to see the room in the light of day. She was so turned off by the stains on our mattress pad and sheets, she called to have all the linens replaced. The staff changed them without complaint but told my wife that although they were clean, most of the linens at the Inn had permanent stains.
After the wedding we returned for our final night stay. I didn't want to stay the second night, I wanted to go to a nice clean hotel. Unfortunately, the Inn demanded payment up-front, so we were stuck there with no way to get refunded for the 2nd day.
On the second night, I went to the front at 9:30 to ask for ice. Where was the host? Nowhere to be seen. He went home early even though the front desk is supposed to stay open until 10:00.
I decided to go through a door, which is where I had seen the host getting ice the previous night. By doing so I unwittingly found my way into the kitchen! I saw that it was very dirty, so much so that my wife and I chose not to order breakfast the next morning.
We experienced so many problems that we could not recommend this place to anybody. Our experience there didn't offer one single thing to wow or impress us. The worst part is that they charged $40 a night more than hotels that are nicer than they are!
When checking out I made the host aware of many of the issues. He didn't seem very interested in listening, I'm sure he's heard it all before. On the bright side, he did ultimately refund us $30 per night.
All in all, The White Fox Inn looks like a place that was probably very nice once upon a time, but has suffered due to years of neglect.
I definitely DO NOT recommend The White Fox Inn.
