“Depends on what you get...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

I have stayed at this hotel twice now, for work. Usually I am at the Valhalla, which is a very nice place, but quite a bit more expensive.
Anyway, having stayed at this hotel twice, I have come to realize that it depends on what part of the hotel they stick you in. It's like a giant maze, there is like, 5 different wings. I initally statyed toward the back of the hotel, on the first floor. It was dark, smelled weird, had stains on the couch and carpet. There was no A/C and it was 30 degrees out side. The bathroom was extremely outdated, tiles were cracked, caulking was mouldy, shower head was a drip.

However, the second time, I stayed in the part of the hotel closest to the lobby, and the difference was night and day. Clean, bright, A/c , GREAT bed, updated bathroom and a big TV.

I understand that they are doing renovations, but I would have assumed you would lower your capacity, and close some of the awful rooms.

As others have mentioned , the restaurant is FANTASTIC!! The staff is super friendly, the dinner and breakfast were very good, great portions, and very well priced!

Room Tip: ask for something in the newly renovated part of the first floor. rooms in the 100's

It is great to hear that you enjoyed your last stay with us and our restaurant! We are indeed looking forward to our renovation project. We have already started preparation and have installed 3 new self dispensing ice machines, new fridges in every guest room, and have ordered new mattresses which we should have mid March. Every guest room will receive new 32" flat screen TV; new bedding and curtains. I hope that you will return to visit us again and let us know how you like the changes. In the meantime I invite you to try our Executive floor as well.

“Needs MAJOR work!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We stayed at this hotel a few times in Dec. boy has it gone down hill. First time we stayed there, the bed wasn't even made properly. Mattress cover was too small for the bed therefore it had slipped down to the bottom of the mattress, phone didn't work, walls were PAPER thin....REALLY!!!!. The person that was in the room beside us I heard EVERY bodily noise that one could possibly imagine. Definatly not a pleasant stay. Wrote them a very nice letter upon our return, and we were offered an upgrade with a reduced rate for our next stay......well there was a next stay, we were in some sort of "executive" suite", ( I would have liked to know what they charge for this cause the only thing that I can see that was different was that the bed was bigger and you got a robe( which I don't know anybody that would dream of putting this on, it was like cardboard) any way we don't smoke and at one point I was almost gagging due to the fact that cigarette smoke was being filtering in through a vent just outside of the bathroom. Well you can imagine that after a couple of hours of this our room smelled like it was being smoked in......was horrible. Once again I wrote a letter, and once again we were offered another upgrade if we wanted to give the hotel another try. We were flying out for a trip and they have a shuttle service so we took the opportunity to yes give it another try. It was better. Still stayed in an executive sweet, but no smoke this time ( yes the robe still felt like cardboard). They are trying and Susan the manager was very nice and apologetic. The rooms are just plain run down. Apparently they are going to be doing a million dollar upgrade, but until then I won't be staying here. Hard to believe that this hotel was at one time the best hotel in TB. No hotel should wait until they are this run down to do upgrades. Feel free to ask me any questions, but I would not recommend this hotel to anyone until the upgrades are done. The only positive thing I have to say is the wiifii worked great. One other thing I would like to point out, all three times we stayed here, NONE of the outside doors worked properly with our keys, we always had to go through the main lobby, quite an inconvenience if you are in a room that is quite far from the lobby!

Thank you for taking the time to post your review of your recent stay with us. I am glad to hear that you did take advantage of the complimentary upgrade, but am sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations.
We indeed are looking forward to the renovations at the property. We have already started installing tub/shower grab bars, and the carpenters will be preparing the tv cabinets for our new 32" flat screen TV's the end of this month.
Following that we will be replacing carpets in guest rooms and corridors; replacing bedding and curtains; and replacing mattresses and frames.
I sincerely hope that you will be back to visit us once renovations are complete. I promise we will continue to provide the same level of friendly service, but with a much improved product. We still stand behind our motto "A guest when you enter ... a friend when you leave". I hope that we will see you again, friend.

“Horrible Experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

First off, we took the shuttle from the airport to the hotel, the shuttle took over 40 minutes to arrive. The van was in horrible condition, the back bumper was almost falling off, the seats were torn and it had a horrible smell.
We got to the hotel, the lobby looks nice, but the carpets were badly stained. As I was checking in the manager of the front desk was very rude to me and to her employee.
I got to the room and it looks nothing like the pictures. The carpet was so stained I didn't take off my shoes.
For breakfast we went to the restaurant in the hotel, the staff were unbelievably nice there, we would recommend it to everyone. Food was great aswell.
Overall, I found that the staff was amazing and the management should treat them with more respect. The place could be better.. a lot better.

Room Tip: pay to upgrade, the standard rooms are gross.

Please accept my apologies for the poor experience you had at your property. I am sorry you experienced a delay in the shuttle picking you up from the airport as our guests find this a real convenience.
I am happy to hear about the great experience you had in the restaurant and will be glad to share your remarks with our staff.
I am not sure whether you are aware that our property will be undergoing some major renovations later this winter, including new carpets in guest rooms and corridors; new mattresses and bed frames; new 32" flat screen TV's;and new bedding and curtains.
I know these renovations cannot affect your previous stay, but I sincerely hope you will give us another try and let us know how you enjoy the improvements.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience.

“Messy bed sheets!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

I stayed here for 2 nights and when I turned down my sheets my first night, there was hair and stains from the previous guest! I had a second bed in my room, which wasn't that bad, so opted to sleep on that (on top of the bed covers). I called the front desk and they asked if I wanted to switch rooms - at this point, it was midnight and I had an early morning. The last thing I wanted to do was re-pack and move. The hotel staff did change the sheets the next morning, but I was very surprised that sheets are not changed automatically when guests depart. I was also surprised that I was not offered any sort of compensation, after all, I paid for a full room with 2 beds and only 1 bed was available. I don't need a lot, but I think a clean bed is the bare bones minimum when staying at a hotel. I will be in Thunder Bay for business quite a bit, but will opt for another hotel after this experience.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience with us. Our hotel policy to is change the sheets on all beds when a guest checks out, and as part of our environmental committment, to give the guest the choice of whether to have sheets changed daily during their visit. I will be reviewing your comments with our Executive Housekeeper in order to prevent such a situation again.
I am very pleased to hear that our front desk staff were accomodating your concerns by offering to change your room.
I assure you this is not our normal standard, and hope that you will visit us again in the future in order that we can show you that we provide satisfactory cleanliness standards to our guests.
Thank you again for sharing this information with us.

“Great Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

I have been staying at this hotel for the past 2 years and have found the staff pleasant to deal with. They have upgraded my room on several occasions and go out of their way to make sure our stay is comfortable. On our latest trip we were upgraded and my wife loved the room. The only concern I have had over my 50+ stays is the restaurant which could stay open a little longer in the evening. Have never had a meal there that I was disappointed with. I am in Thunder Bay about twice a month and stay there each and every time. This trend will continue. I look forward to the renovations which will be completed in the near future.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are great.
