This, I imagine, was once a lovely building in it's prime. Unfortunately, it is very run down. The carpets are stained, the hallways are dark and dingy. There is no elevator, but it Stratford's boutique hotels that is to be expected so for us, not a deterrent, but others may struggle. The room was very small, at some point our window had been egged (long ago, I suspect) but never cleaned up, stains on the carpet and duvet, and the bathroom is the smallest I've ever seen. I mean you can sit on the toilet and brush your teeth in the sink without leaning forward while soaking your feet in the tub. There is a wee little coffee maker in the room, but no fridge. If you want ice you have to get it from the restaurant downstairs. There is no staff on site overnight, they begin work at 8am; we were at the front desk at 8am to check out. Do yourself a favour and stay at Mercer Hall instead.

I was really worried after reading the horrible reviews of this place but it really wasn't bad at all -- especially if you consider the location and price. The location is perfect. The hotel itself is old and charming. The rooms were clean and had all the essentials. Our room (a mini suite) had very tall ceilings, huge windows and lots of light. The room was very clean and comfortable and the service was excellent.

However there are no elevators so be prepared to walk up some stairs. No flat screen TVs or IPod docs or pillow menu but plenty of quirky atmosphere. We totally enjoyed our stay and will return.

We read the reviews before booking and should have known better. But everything else was booked, the price was good and - hey - we're only going to sleep there. Right? Think again. There is no elevator so only book this if you are young and have light luggage. The five days of trudging up three floors got wearing. The big problem, though, is the cleanliness. My partner suffered allergic and sinus reactions to our room so that even "just sleeping" proved to be hazardous. Beware.
On the brighter side, the adjacent restaurant (Piece of Cake" was delightful and we fell in love with the owner - Deb.

The Albert Street Inn reminds me somewhat of those Gower Street B&Bs I frequent in London. The location is quite near the theatres, the atmosphere is pleasantly lived-in and warm with age, the service is neighbourly and helpful, the place is clean and tended to, the room rates are very reasonable, and in the restaurant at breakfast one can mingle with locals and be looked after by a remarkably congenial waitress named Deb. This place has character, unlike those artificially friendly B&Bs with twenty flowery and pointless pillows per room that signify pretense. Complaints at this site about the stains on the hall carpet at the Albert Street Inn should only be considered petty. I review each theatre season at the Festival and I'll certainly be back simply because I like it here.
