Before going to Prudhommes Inn, I read the comments here and was struck by their extremes: some saying "don't stay; urine smell & bugs" while others said "Qualité/prix excellent".

I'd rate it somewhere inbetween.

There was no urine smell or other smell in the room, though some of the lobbies had stale air, and one entranceway was hot enough that it felt like a sauna. The hallway carpets were stained. But the room, beds, and bathroom were acceptable. This hotel does not have a view. Our room was facing north (but don't expect a view of the lake). A room on the south side of the building might suffer from QEW freeway noise (we didn't try one of those rooms). We did not try the pool. For breakfast they gave us a voucher good for a sandwich at the neighboring Subway. Other than the marginal upkeep of this place, I'd say its biggest drawback is the location -- it's 14km from St Catharines, for example, in the middle of nowhere, on a freeway service road, half a kilometer from the lake.

Recently we stayed at the Prudhommes Inn. When we first arrived at the hotel we checked into the front lobby reception which was by appearance very nice, modern and clean. The staff was very friendly and all seemed great. We were given a room on the second floor and proceeded to our destination. Upon entering the 2nd floor we were greeted with an awful smell in the hallway. The smell was a combination of urine & mustiness. The smell was soooo strong we couldn't stand it so we went down to the lobby and requested another room. The staff was very accommodating and placed us in a first floor room. We entered the room and it appeared a bit better than the 1st one given. Then the nightmare really began!!! As we turned in for the night I was reading for a bit and noticed a bug on the sheet which I killed, then I noticed another. I realize this is an old hotel so I was willing to give it that reason for these critters. Finally I feel asleep...as I got out of my bed in the morning I noticed small bugs scurrying out from where I was laying. At this point we quickly packed, checked out and left for our next destination. We also noticed that the middle entrance doors at Prudhommes had empty slots on the doors entering the building where the locks should have been...anyone off the street could have just walked into this building. Didn't really give you a sense of security!!! I must say the pictures on the internet are very, very, very deceiving. My advice to anyone would be to keep on driving and find another place to stay as this one is not worth your time and definitely not worth the money.

The hotel was chosen by the organizer of the Lambton Outdoor Club's traditional Victoria Day Bruce Trail hike. We found the hotel room OK, the amenities (except the lamps - not very convenient to read in bed) good and the place clean. The staff was helpful. I found the Subway coupons instead of the breakfast a bit inconvenient but OK.
The broken remains of the parking lot pavement would be a turn-off for someone driving around looking for a place to stay.

We also recently stayed here for our family reunion. We had a great time. The staff and owners were really fantastic. They were so accommodating and provided wonderful service. The rooms are dated but they are well equipped, clean and the beds are comfortable. Our room had a microwave and fridge which was great when travelling with cihildren. The hotel has a fantastic games room and a nice lobby. The staff had a wood burning fire going in the lobby which was very cozy and nice given that it was February and cold outside. The location is great with a Tim Hortons, Subway and nice restaurant which was attached to the hotel. The restaurant also provided fantastic service.
