“Very inexpensive and like an old time In n from the 1890's.”

Despite the fact there was no TV in the room I thought the old style furnishings were good-there was a large bath tub in the bathroom just like in an old western movie. A shared bathroom is what you get at this Hotel....which is not all that hard to cope with. I had a nice large room which was OK for a few days. I recommend it for travellers looking for something just a little different. Mostly quiet but there was a loud metal band playing next door at one point which was a bit of a drag.... especially since they didn't play very well.

“Fabulous place to stay, will return on next trip”

If you like old buildings, this is the place to stay. The building is old and charming, has much character. The staff was fantastic. Very friendly and helpful. Our room had one queen bed and two couches, was a suite for a great price. The hotel only has air in some of its rooms, ours had air, and we loved the room. The location is great as well, within walking distance to many of the things to see in the Sault. The food in the pub was also very good, and the bartender was friendly. This was a great place to stay and the value was exceptional, We plan to return again when we come back on our next trip

Room Tip: ask for private bathroom and room with air, as they have shared bathrooms in many rooms and no air.

“A work in progress?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

The algonquin seemed to me to be a work in progress.... The staff(frank, chris and DJ) were very helpful and friendly.Chris went out of his way to help me to interpret my map.It is an old, stately building that must have an interesting history. The owner would do well in putting up old pictures and a short historical explanation of this hotel as i am sure it would interest travellers... They have an excellent set-up for entertainement! A pub like atmosphere with live bands and an outside deck attached to it which is sure to please young travellers. The lobby is nice and appears to be recently renovated. I slept in room # 5 and #15 on 2 separate occasions during the same week. Room # 5 was comfortable, the only complaint being that it was very hot due to poor ventilation in the room. Room #15 was absolutly disgusting as it smelled of mold, mildew or some dead animal... i,m not quite sure! I suspect it was due either to the carpet or ''dry rot''. The owner would do well in removing the carpet and putting ceramic tiling in the bathroom to offset this.I do hope that she responds to this comment as it will show wether or not she is serious about completing the transformation of this building into a user friendly environnement for hostellers... A good paint job wouldn't hurt either as room colors are a dingy off-white yellowish color... yuk! Room 15 is also just above the live band stage which makes it noisy but hey,it's billed as a youth hostel, right? Bed linen appeared clean to me,but that smell would be enough to convince just about anybody otherwise... Carpeting in the stairs leading to the rooms could also be removed,in my opinion as i am sure that there are beautiful wood stairs under there that would bring out the character and stately charm of the building. I would also put in a common kitchen/room eventually so hostellers could cook their own meals and swap travel stories as the pub is not open every day of the week. Bottom line is that hostels usually provide comparitively cheap, simple, clean and confortable accomodation. The algonquin is not presently fulfilling this mission. I would not want my 20 yr old daughter spending in one of those rooms...
