“Excellent Location; Somewhat Less than Helpful Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

There was a lot to like about this place:
1) An excellent central location, almost directly across the street from where you catch the tour train into the Algoma Woods;
2) Spacious, clean rooms;
3) An adjoining cafeteria that serves great breakfast omelets;
4) A spacious covered parking garage back of the motel - free to patrons

However, I did have some disappointments with the place:
1) The staff made no free access to the Internet available (unless you have your Wi-Fi-equipped computer/phone with you). However, whereas most hotels/motels have at least one free computer available in the lobby, this Travelodge charged patrons in 15-minute increments for access to the lobby computer. I had to pay $5 to use the computer for just 15 seconds;
2) The room I was in had no individual thermostat control. You had to be satisfied with whatever heating/cooling was centrally delivered to you;
3) The evening clerk was kind enough to deliver an extra blanket to my room at night. However in other respects, that clerk was not too helpful. When I asked for a map of Sault Ste. Marie main streets and attractions, she provided me with a very dated map that sent me on a wild goose chase looking for the tours through the Soo Locks from the Canadian side. After questioning several nonplussed sailors at the docks, I learned that those tours had been discontinued some years ago. When I complained to the clerk, she just shrugged. I could tell she wasn't going to make any attempt to supply up-dated tourist information to other patrons. I found such up-dated maps at some local restaurants.

On the whole though, the general good location and cleanliness of this place trumped any of these inconveniences.

“Very nice rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Travelodge the long weekend in September and found the property to be very nice! The rooms were very clean and nicely updated. The Front Desk staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The rates are very reasonable as well. I loved the little cafe just outside the lobby..."Absolutely Delicious" as well...very cozy.

I would definitely recommend this property to everyone!! And I would definitely stay there again!

“Don't risk a smoking room if you're not a smoker.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

There were hardly any rooms left in the whole city when booked, so reluctantly booked smoking rooms, hoping that someone would cancel or swap, or at least that the rooms would be OK after a good airing. No such luck. Several other people checking in before me were also looking for non-smoking. When I asked why they had so many smoking rooms, they explained that they were popular for people with pets -- smoking pets, presumably. Anyway, the atmosphere in the smoking corridor was terrible for a non-smoker. The smoke seemed to come through vents from the neighbouring rooms, getting worse progressively through the night.

The hotel is OK. It seemed very understaffed -- one guy in front of me took more than 15 minutes with the check in person, as he felt claustrophobic in his room and wanted to change. After telling him (and others) that there were, categorically, no free rooms, she suddenly found him a non-smoking suite. Very mysterious. My dad went down to get help when his key didn't work, and they didn't offer to re-code it. He was left to wait for me to come back from shopping with the extra key.

The good things are situation, ease of parking, large rooms, fridges, decent quality beds and linen.

Good day Roz 57, Thank you for your comments. I would like to clarify a few items in regards to your review. Firstly, yes any smoking room will have a residual smoke odor inside and just outside that room no matter how much we air out or spray the room, that is the nature of a smoking room. I realize that you are a non smoker (and so am I), how do you knowingly rent a smoking room then complain that it smells like smoke?
As for the gentleman who apparently took a while to check in, This guest had previously booked the least expensive interior room in this Hotel, then was attempting to get the most expensive and larger room at no additional cost. Sometimes it takes a little longer to handle certain guests requests, warranted or not. I apologize for your wait time at check in, as I mentioned the guest ahead of you took more time than usual because of his "request"
We do our best to accommodate all of our guests in any way possible as each and every individual circumstance is different.
A little tip to receiving the accommodations you prefer is to make reservations well in advance when you travel, this way you are not left with taking whatever room type is left.
As for our smoking rooms, these normally do sell out first as we only have a dozen of them in total. That particular evening was not t he norm as we still had a hand full of smoking rooms available when you arrived, and we did sell out all our rooms that evening.

“It was great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

Hotel wasgreat. Rooms were clean, bed comfortable , and the hotel was in central location by the river. The staff were always friendly and accomodating. Air conditioing in room was fantastic, but the hallways and excercise room were warm. Indoor parking in winter would be a be a big plus. Staff in small restaurant on site were friendly and the food was basic but excellent. The homemade bread was particurarly good.
