Independent motels have gone the way of independent bookstores, in some respects. They used to be in every town, and the owners always tried to please their customers with simple, honest service, at reasonable prices. They were not trendy, and they did not answer to a higher corporate power. Now chains and franchises dominate the market, and customers are rarely pleased.
This is not the case with Rideau Heights Inn, which is an inviting spot to consider in the south end of town.
Rideau Heights is a conventional motel in most ways, but the staff and the 'vibe' will charm you. It's a no-pressure zone, set back from a busy roadway, in the middle of a small grove of handsome white pines. (Unfortunately, many of the big pines are suffering from natural causes, and seedlings need to be planted every spring and fall, to make up for the coming losses in the years ahead. There is also a neighboring building out back that needs to screened by judicious planting on the Rideau Heights side of the fence.)
I have stayed at Rideau Heights many times over the years. It has never disappointed, and has always been a restful spot to unwind and get a good night's sleep.
A couple of drawbacks: you need to have your own car. Local public transit to this area is poor. The taxis are very expensive. There's no swimming pool, sauna, or other amenities.
Room rates are reasonable in the winter months, but they are pushing a bit too high in the summer. Rideau Heights should definitely offer discounts for AARP members: aging babyboomers will fill those rooms!
