“Great stay in Ottawa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2011

We stayed one night in this lovely Victorian building located a short walk from all the major attractions in Ottawa. VERY clean rooms and bathrooms: each room is decorated with lots of antiques and old photographs and paintings, but no dust ! Despite the relatively small size of our room, it had a very comfy double bed, two side tables and a work desk, two sofa chairs, a small fridge, a TV, a fireplace(!)...and enough space to move around ! We had our own bathroom and a free parking space for the day. The host Richard was very friendly (but not intrusive) and served us a delicious breakfast the following morning in the bright and sunny breakfast room. For the 135 $CAN a night we paid, it was excellent value for money ! If we go back to Ottawa, we'll definitely stay at this B&B again.

Within walking distance of everything. The place was beautiful. The service was incredible. Great hearty breakfasts available every morning. Richard was very knowledgeable and quick with neighborhood suggestions.

“Beautiful and quiet in heart of Ottawa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2010

Found the Inn on Somerset on Trip Adviser, and needed a place in downtown Ottawa for a quick weekend visit in December. As it happened, bad weather had hit and my friend and I almost had the place to ourselves for the weekend. The house is a beautiful old Victorian with lots of character but also nice upgraded bathrooms and all the expected modern comforts. We took a suite on the third floor (warning for older travellers, it is a bit of a hike up steep stairs, but there are nice rooms on lower floors as well) and fell in love with it. A very comfortable bed for me (appreciated having slightly flatter double pillows rather than the ridiculously puffed up single pillows you get in some places). I did not find the traffic noise bad at all, with the caveat we were there on a weekend and traffic was reduced by the bad weather. The proprietor of the Inn, Richard ,was charming and helpful and lugged our bags up to the third floor for us. We had brunch plans the first morning, but I went down for breakfast on the second morning and was treated to a wonderful baked egg concoction with bacon and salsa that Richard had made -- absolutely delicious. I found the Inn on Somerset to be comfortable, well-priced, geographically convenient, and an excellent value for the money. As good as some of the B & Bs I've stayed in during trips to Europe.

“Friendly reception, lovely house, good location in Ottawa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2010

The B&B is located in a very nice victorian character house. The B&B keepers are very friendly and open to give suggestions or to answer questions. There are multiple rooms which you can make use of when being there. The room was very cosy and spacious. Breakfast was surprising (eggs Benedict!) but original.

“Very friendly, clean, comfortable bed and breakfast in the heart of Ottawa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2010

We spent one night at the Inn on Somerset, and were very pleased with the service, the cleanliness and the quality of this bed and breakfast. We booked online via hotels.ca, and paid about $112 per night on a weekday in August. We reserved a basic room with a shared washroom. These rooms looked very nice, and even the shared washrooms appeared fine. However, when we arrived, our host, Richard had upgraded us to a better room with a sitting area, a desk, and a private bathroom. It was a beautiful room, that was on the top floor, had tons of space and was decorated in a victorian style, like the rest of the beautiful building.

The bed in our room was possibly the most comfortable bed that I've ever slept in. We had such a relaxing night's sleep. For breakfast, we had eggs benedict, coffee, and juice. Cereal and toast were also available, and the service was friendly and prompt.

The location of this bed and breakfast is ideal. It's only about a 10 minute walk to parliament hill, and another 5 minutes walking to Byward Market. We walked around quite a bit, and really enjoyed how convenient this place was. During our mid-week stay, there was plenty of parking available at the inn, so that was never a concern for us.

One thing that I'm a little concerned about (more of a societal issue than anything), is the number of people writing reviews here about how there's a big rainbow flag out front and "if that doesn't bother you", the place is ok. Why would someone see this universal symbol of tolerance, a flag that announces to potential customers that this place of business is welcoming and will not discriminate based on sexual orientation as being a drawback? As a heterosexual male traveling with my female partner, I prefer to give my business to entrepreneurs who prefer not to discriminate against gay people. If anything, I see this as an added attraction towards the Inn on Somerset. It'd be nice if other hotels would be more openly tolerant as well.

Overall, I had a great time in Ottawa, and really enjoyed my stay at the Inn on Somerset.
