We spent one night at the Inn on Somerset, and were very pleased with the service, the cleanliness and the quality of this bed and breakfast. We booked online via hotels.ca, and paid about $112 per night on a weekday in August. We reserved a basic room with a shared washroom. These rooms looked very nice, and even the shared washrooms appeared fine. However, when we arrived, our host, Richard had upgraded us to a better room with a sitting area, a desk, and a private bathroom. It was a beautiful room, that was on the top floor, had tons of space and was decorated in a victorian style, like the rest of the beautiful building.
The bed in our room was possibly the most comfortable bed that I've ever slept in. We had such a relaxing night's sleep. For breakfast, we had eggs benedict, coffee, and juice. Cereal and toast were also available, and the service was friendly and prompt.
The location of this bed and breakfast is ideal. It's only about a 10 minute walk to parliament hill, and another 5 minutes walking to Byward Market. We walked around quite a bit, and really enjoyed how convenient this place was. During our mid-week stay, there was plenty of parking available at the inn, so that was never a concern for us.
One thing that I'm a little concerned about (more of a societal issue than anything), is the number of people writing reviews here about how there's a big rainbow flag out front and "if that doesn't bother you", the place is ok. Why would someone see this universal symbol of tolerance, a flag that announces to potential customers that this place of business is welcoming and will not discriminate based on sexual orientation as being a drawback? As a heterosexual male traveling with my female partner, I prefer to give my business to entrepreneurs who prefer not to discriminate against gay people. If anything, I see this as an added attraction towards the Inn on Somerset. It'd be nice if other hotels would be more openly tolerant as well.
Overall, I had a great time in Ottawa, and really enjoyed my stay at the Inn on Somerset.
